If I was an admin at JSU I would try it again. Find another high profile ex nfl star that is willing to come in and do/try what Sanders did. I’m sure there is a ex star out there that would be willing to try.
Goes undefeated at a HBCU bringing more talent, media exposure, and money than they’ve ever had, but Jackson State has been betrayed. Advancing yourself and taking on a new challenge in the coaching profession is bad. Great take Bomani much like all your others
I think it’s strange to unfairly target coach prime for the large promises he made… Idk if you are paying attention but every coach in the business makes grand promises at every stop. But you guys want to discredit Deion for only caring for himself? And victimizing Jackson State is quite rich. Ask the school if they’d want to do the coach prime experiment again even if they knew this was the outcome, they would say yes 10/10 times. I guess he didn’t totally “fix” HBCUs (that was a realistic expectation). But he also did more for HBCUs on a national stage than idk, anyone.
I think the issue is that he positioned himself as a savior of HBCUs. Chadwell never claimed to be coaching Coastal as some kind of altruistic endeavor. It's similar to Freeze's hyper christian hypocrisy. Deion would've taken a HC job with the Brooklyn Gentrifiers of the all white flag football league if he thought it would get him a P5 gig. No one is claiming he has to be a savior for HBCUs, he did that himself and it's fair to criticize him for bailing at the 1st opportunity and almost certainly gutting the team of its best players on the way out
Tennessee State tried to do this with Eddie George. I don't think it always translates to wins or exposure. But I look forward to JSU hiring Jeff Saturday full time.
It worked and if they can find a similar candidate again then they can really just build on the exposure and capitalize again.
I agree with the point that he’s one of one and that it won’t really be easy to repeat. He is uniquely great at branding and is actually a good football coach. I don’t think that there are any other ex-NFL guys who can just hop in like he did (see, Eddie George).
I don't think it's normal for HCs to evoke god in their pressers when taking a job. It doesn't translate well everywhere. Hugh Freeze used to do that at Ole Miss, and we all saw how that one turned out.
Agree and will be hard to find a similar personality, but has to be someone more engaging than George that may take a crack at it. Might not duplicate Sanders, but probably better than George
It’s borderline offensive to think fans of Jacksonville state actually took him at his word and were naive enough to think he’d forego power5 jobs. he wanted a power5 job before Jackson state. Everyone knew he’d take one when he could. early in the season he was talking about making sure he sets up the program to succeed after he’s gone. Incredibly disingenuous to create a narrative that Jackson State and HBCUs at large are shocked by this, and somehow didn’t benefit from coach Prime being there for any time at all.
Deion got a ways to go to be an elite level Jesus grifter, but I got faith he'll get there eventually The owner of the repair shop said Sanders wanted to pay only $1,500 of the $4,265.57 bill, saying that Jesus had informed him that was all he needed to pay. When Sanders drove up, he refused to pay the invoice amount, handing Compton a $1,500 check and saying, "Praise Jesus ... I follow what in my heart I'm told to pay.''
Not with the $15M buyout in that contract. When's the last time a school paid anywhere close to that kind of buyout to hire someone?
I have a lot of competing feelings about Deion leaving. I’ve read a lot of very thoughtful opinions from people about why coaching for a HBCU is different, and why it hurts more that Deion left. Ultimately, it’s Deion’s call to do what is best for him, but it’s way more complicated than most coaching moves, in my opinion. (I also think that most coaching moves are varying degrees of unethical, for whatever it’s worth).
feel like it depends on what school it is It would obviously have to be a school like texas if they wanted him badly enough or bama if saban retired. Clearly those are hypothetical and probably would never happen but a big enough school would pay it imo
People don't like paying buyouts. I don't know why, but every year we see these searches and the fan media says "we have $$ and the buyout won't matter," and then the guys with the big buyouts never get hired. I was all aboard the "I don't like this for CU because Deion will leave as soon as someone bigger comes around," but I'd be shocked if anyone legitimately tries to hire him next year, and surprised if he's not there at least 3 years.
you’re probably right. there are absolutely schools that could though. I mean schools like msu and ole miss are paying the tuckers and kiffins of the world 9+ mil a year, so most schools would have the money to blow if they wanted to. but you’re right on the buyout thing. wont pay another schools buyout but will happily fire a coach and pay him 4 years to fuck off is weird
I'm confused as to Deion's endgame in all of this. Does he want the biggest, most prestigious job, just wants the most money, or does he just want to prove he can win anywhere? He doesn't need the money even a little bit.
I have to say after watching the first few days unfold, i think cu is about the level of school deion can get away with his shenanigans. Even if hes successful are top programs with very involved, boosters and players and tons of traditions really going be willing to turn their whole program over to him.
It only takes one, but I'm certain most would. Look at any school's list of their past 5 or 6 coaches, most are littered with bums, the baseline for getting a good P5 job is extremely low and I think Deion easily clears it. Plenty of schools in the south would love all the church bs that comes along with it, as well
He can't recruit in the NFL. He isnt and X's and O's guy and his style would never work in the NFL. What appeal is there for any team to hire him?
1) "He doesn't need the money" is not something people with a lot of money say or think. They always need more. Nobody ever thinks they have enough. even people 10x richer than Deion. He would love more money. 2) To me, Deion seems to be a Trump like figure in the sense that the number one thing he wants is attention. He wants to be on TV all the time. He wants a bunch of people telling him how special he is and how he is the fuckin' man. He is going to ride this thing as long as he can. My guess is his goal is to be a head coach at a top 5 job and win natties.
he's definitely trying to appeal to southerners with his press conference. seems like he took notes from hugh freeze
We don't even know that his style will work in P5. Deion is going to lookout for Deion and that's it.
Deion's ultimate motivation is winning , an ultimate competitor type he's also extremely intelligent If he wins at Colorado there will be an NFL team desperate enough Just like they did with urban and Matt Rhule etc.
For those more attuned to Deion's life and coaching career so far, does he see this as one of the early steps of a long coaching career? Like is he in this for the next 15-20 years, hoping to catch on somewhere big and try have a long term career? He doesn't strike me as the guy who wants to grind it out on the sidelines and deal with the ups and downs, the more unglamorous parts of being a coach of a fanbase with high expectations, that you see in a typical coaching career.
I think his plan is to absolutely raid the portal and compete enough at Colorado to jump to the next job in 2-4 years. No clue if it will work.
My problem is that he said “[all coaches] have to sell a 10 year plan while knowing their plan is only year to year” so things work. Than criticizes Sanders for doing just that. Don’t hate Sanders for doing exactly what every coach does. Also it’s crazy that some itt are acting like they’ve never been part of a coaching change. People leave scholarships get pulled why are you guys acting like Sanders isn’t doing what every other coach does. #Colorado Buffaloes posters can attest that I like CU I almost went there currently my youngest plans to go there I root for them against anyone sans UCLA so I hope this turns out well and there hasn’t been anything so far that makes me think it won’t. People itt saying “this is going as well as expected” are full of shit and hoping Sanders fails for what reason I don’t know.
why is he a “grifter” for doing eve the same shit every other coach does? He fucking won at JSU and moved on to a better situation? Is Lincoln Riley a grifter? How about Sunny Dykes? Are they grifters? GMAFB with this bullshit. All coaches are egotistical self centered assholes who have to sell their bullshit plans for the future while keeping one foot out the door.
