Last week brown patch did a number on my lawn in 2 days and we’re going dormant. I hate this is how it is ending this year. Guess I’ll incorporate more fungicide in my lawn next year :tebow:

The grasses we use in our lawns are mostly European species. There is a lot of genetic breeding that goes into grass species now. Grass is a real plant.

Yes, shitty food is shitty for anything.

I’m on an acre with tons of oak trees and shit tons of leaves. What is the most effective way of picking them up? Currently doing it with a non-self-propelled push mower and a bag. Takes me three or four hours to do the front and the back. Maybe get a riding mower with a mulch blade?

Ridding or zero turn and just cover you deck discharge and mulch them up. It’s great for your soul.

I rake them into beds at the foot of the nearest tree and/or areas where lawn grass isn't growing well.

If they fall into a lawn area and I don't feel like raking, then I will mow the leaves on mulch setting (ideally when they've dried)

You don't want to try and grow grass right up to the trunk of your trees or shrubs. You definitely want beds.

2 medium red oaks. Knew I wasn't going to rake or leave them mulched.

The coverage was so thick that I only mowed over about a wheels width worth of leaves at a time, so this is like after 15-20 passes.

So each 39 gallon bag can hold 3 lawnmower bags worth of leaves x 12 bags=36 times I stopped to dump the lawnmower bag into trash bags

I paid a couple of guys $250 to get every leaf out of my gutters and off my lawn when the final leaf had dropped.

I had been maintaining it as best as I could since the fall but wouldn’t have/couldn’t have cleaned it up like they did.

My backyard gets very limited sun, probably less than 4 hrs of direct light per day. Also, my dogs are terrorists that run around it everyday ripping up what little grass I have. Now my backyard is a dusty and dirt filled mess.

what kind of plant can I grow in lieu of grass that doesn’t need much sun and can withstand dogs running on it all day? Or is there a specific strain of grass i should plant?

First time I’m having to care for a lawn in my life. Have Zoysia that was put down last July. I have these weeds coming through now. What’s best approach here? Was just gonna pull them out but they’re not coming up as easy as a regular weed and I’m having to yank off a lot of the grass as well. I have pre emergent ready to put down after I handle it but wasn’t sure best practice for how it currently is and if I’d be better off spraying some type of weed killer.

I usually don’t but if you have particular areas that have build up maybe. I have one area that has a lot of build up due to all the winter rain that I may dethatch this year

it depends on where you live, but common violet should work, altho most people consider it weedy.

"shade grass blends" which have fine fescues (chewings fescue, red fescue, etc) might work if you babied them for a year or two and kept the dogs away

i hate liriope but it might survive, idk. And there are lots of carex varieties, i bet with some experimentation you could find something that is mowable and will survive.

for foot traffic the hardiest ground cover i can think of is this :
    https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/plantago-major/
but it is extremely invasive and basically the nuclear option

also you could put down asphalt

    Dumb question-

I used green view fairway fall fertilizer and Amazon delivered to my house no problem. Now I want the spring version and Amazon is saying it cannot deliver to my house.

But why? I’m not gonna be Walter White over here but is that the reason?

edit for being dumb found it at Home Depot. Carry on.
