Speaking of anyone have pet insurance they recommend? After going through heart disease with our first one and spending I don't want to know how much money I want this one covered from day 1.

Ask your vet which one they recommend. That's what I did. I use Trupanion. Ive had it for 11 years since he was a puppy. However I cant really recommend it or not. Been extremely fortunate to never need to use it yet.

I’m making a dog adoption shelter game. You intake dogs, clean them up, feed them the right foods based on a vet report, play with them, get them happy, have adoption day events. Adoption fees are paid in Bones as the currency, which you use to expand kennels to accept larger and rarer dogs with more demanding needs and then higher Bones. It’s certainly not a 1-to-1 of actual adoption shelter reality but any tidbits about shelter life anyone could share would help set the game up to at least not be offensive to the shelter community. I hope.

We have Prudent Pet for our five-month old Yorkie, and it's already paid off. Ran up a $900 vet bill two weeks ago because he was vomiting and had diarrhea. Got $600 of it back.

That's a scam. All forms of insurance is not covered by the vets.

I can't speak for any other pet insurance but ours, but the vet has absolutely nothing to do with it. Pay the vet, file a claim, save some money.

I’ve had Nationwide and now ManyPets, very easy to use and efficient in payouts. Made an entire spreadsheet based on our dog’s use cases. Unfortunately have always had skin rashes from allergies as a pre-existing condition. Get your pet insurance early before some shit like that in their first year crops up and is no longer eligible for coverage.

We have Nationwide. My employer at the time offered the policy at a discount and then I just kept it after leaving. It's now down to about $50/month. It was more expensive when he was a puppy (maybe $70-75/month) and just turned 4. It reimburses 90% of basically everything after the $250 deductible is met. It's obviously more coverage than just catastrophic but he has developed skin allergies and has Valley Fever for life and all of that is covered. It's nice to just go to the vet and not worry about how much it's going to cost. It more than pays for itself each year.

We left nationwide because they just kept raising the prices. At the end, for a 6 year old bull terrier whose skin problems they weren’t covering anyways, it was $172 a month. Fuck that.

I don't bother with travel insurance because it won't cover my health issues.
I don't bother with pet insurance because it doesn't cover any vet bills.

The dogs get treats they can swallow but no bones. The shelter atmosphere is pretty high anxiety as it is, bones would likely give them a reason to resource guard.

The anxiety can work both ways too, if you're a morning worker and there's new dogs checked in from the previous day you don't get to see or communicate with them in their kennels before being introduced for the first time. Your first interaction with the dog is getting inside this tiny boxed in space behind the wall of their kennel, you can't see them and they can't see you, then you pull up on a guillotine door and hope for the best.

If a dog bites someone they get put into Bite Quarantine. They'll then get reevaluated by the behavioral team. I haven't been bit yet. First thing I like to do when I enter that 3'x4' cage is drop a treat on the ground, a peace offering. 80% of the time the dog doesn't even see it.

You keep saying that, but it’s totally wrong. Maybe the insurance product doesn’t exist in Australia, but nearly all of us in this thread have some form of pet insurance that we use regularly.

Pet insurance is a fucking scam mate.
Vets here in Australia don't allow it. Because it won't lower costs. It won't do anything.

WTF are you talking about boss? We have pet insurance here in Australia and it does cover expenses. You wouldn’t use it for a regular vet check up but any major procedure or injury you would 100% make a claim.

Just changed employers and pet insurance providers because of it. Used to have Pets Best and it saved me about $400 last year (for basic stuff). My new employer provides it through Nationwide and it's even better coverage from what I can tell. Not sure why anyone IN THE UNITED STATES wouldn't opt for it if they can.

I need to look in my employee portal. I’m assuming it’s too late for ACL surgery? But with what I’m reading, once one goes the other has a high chance to follow, so I might as well get ahead of that.

I'm not sure but I know that Nationwide told me that my dog is immediately covered for ACL stuff once the new policy kicks in which the guy said is rare for first year policies. That comment could've been specific to her as a 4yo golden retriever though. Might be worth looking into for you. Obviously they won't cover it if they know your dog already has an existing ACL problem though so be careful talking about it.

    Walt found a home!

We got a slew of new dogs yesterday. One poor guy looks to have been hit by a car, back leg just dangles. He'll have it looked at and odds are they'll amputate.

I have virtually no experience with German Shepherds, we've got a few of them at the shelter now. I had no idea how powerful these dogs are. Out of all the breeds German Shepherds seem to handle the shelter life the best. They rarely act up or lash out, they just chill in their kennels while all the other dogs are pounding the panic button. One of our shepherds is Milo (below), he's a return to sender. He couldn't resist chasing cats so we got him back. If you adopt a dog and it doesn't work out you can return them. Milo is young and still has lots to learn, he did his best to rip my arm out of its socket today. Half way through our walk he decides it's time to run full speed, leash be damned, I'm holding on for dear life while he's just doing circles dragging a 240lb man around.
