Like the local PD accounts that brag that taking a pound of weed and $1k off the streets is protecting the community?
The violence. The bloodlust. There's Death Squads wearing badges roaming America's streets. There's no other way to put it.
Any clue if this is why the one white cop on the scene for the second half of the interaction wasn’t fired? He was a sheriff deputy not a Memphis cop? I’m trying to figure out which of the 5 cops fired based on the video and I cant get the numbers to make sense. (Aside from excusing white cops from criminal activity of course.)
Protestors need to go burn down police stations, not businesses. Bet things would change real quick then
I hope Whitlock winds down in a super painful way where he chokes on pleural fluid and/or with diabetic ulcers. Dude sucks.
i guess I don’t follow. Normally, people don’t need 24/7 cameras. There’s one other profession I can think of that constantly gets sued for negligence, and it’s the medical profession. In that field, nurses constantly report issues. In the police profession, literally nobody reports anything, and if they do, they get pushed out with the quickness. EMTs were on-site and didn’t intervene on this bullshit.
i try to be the devils advocate a little too much all the time. I look for an explanation because I can never believe that this happened and nobody stepped in. But I guess I am delusional.
I realize that this is four pages back and not the most pressing police matter in the news today but I’d like you all to know that your assumptions about the high-as-fuck cop were wrong. He has “a medical condition”. https://www.kcur.org/news/2023-01-2...er-caught-on-video-looking-impaired?_amp=true
Police killed more people last year than in any other year prior. They do not protect us from anything
It's a state sanctioned organized crime network extorting money from "law abiding" citizens and businesses while providing protection for criminals who buy them off. Just for the fuck of it, for their kicks, they'll murder someone in the streets to terrorize the community. "Scorpion unit" -- it's no different to the right wing death squads that terrorize people in Central America and West Africa. No different.
No. Police say he MAY have a medical condition. This translates to he DOESN’T have a medical condition. Reading this thread I’ve learned to never take police statements at face value and wait for video or investigations to be completed.
Pleasantly surprised Rafael Otano and Lorenzo Orfila, who have since been fired, face charges of armed kidnapping and battery
i think it’s clear that we need more protests and more property destruction. loot and destroy every precinct, city hall, bank and mall. we can force policy makers to decide if they’re willing to keep defending the police as the city burns around them. the police don’t protect the people, they protect capital. they’re the foot soldiers of the neoliberal capitalist world order that is making all of miserable. that’s where the war against them has to be fought.
I 100% agree w your general sentiment and analysis of the police’s role in protecting capital ect. I’m not going to finger wag riots and property destruction. It’s a natural reaction to oppression when the voices of the oppressed are continually ignored. I understand why it happens. It’s completely justified. However, I dont agree that it’s a useful tactic. It only justifies more aggressive policing and violence by the state. I wish we lived in a world where it didn’t but I just don’t see that aspect of the discourse changing for the better.
I don't think you will ever reform policing in this country without tearing it down wholesale first, and I don't foresee that happening without widespread violence against the State and everything that upholds our racist and extremely inequitable country. Police as they exist now are not going to submit to any laws passed that would defang their ability to almost completely act with impunity.
Somebody posted a statistic a few hundred pages back that showed the very low number of cops that are killed during traffic stops (or maybe it was on duty in general?). It was lower than many other dangerous professions.
Property destruction is a generally poor idea (the 1968 riots were an absolute disaster for working class neighborhoods, many of which never recovered, for instance) but... like... if someone wants to donk off some fox news personalities i certainly won't stand in their way Spoiler
Those are the actual National Guard that was called up in anticipation of this. That's not a convoy of Memphis police humvees, so it doesn't really have anything to do with police budgets. Police budgets are already outrageous, there isn't a need to be purposefully misleading
