Here's a related story about a D1 basketball ref volunteering at an AAU tourney to teach his son how to ref. Audio interview halfway down is worth the listen. https://kxno.iheart.com/content/2022-05-18-how-this-ncaa-ref-knows-we-are-doomed-as-a-society/
I wasn’t there but apparently 2 nights ago at flag football playoffs a coach was arguing a call with a ref. After the game he went up to apologize and the ref basically told him to shove it and shit blew up
Loved playing hockey growing up. One summer a dad we knew converted a local ice rink and started a legit roller hockey league variety of ages (I played with his son and yes we won it all) Now I've had a ton of experience with hockey parents. But this was just a fun no pressure No contact. No nothing league. Sure we had full mandatory gear refs jerseys etc etc like a normal league but ITS JUST FUCKING ROLLER HOCKEY! FIRST GAME: As any hockey player knows growing up games go like a revolving door. The minute a game is over they clean (the ice) and the next game starts. The window is that tight. There's only so much ice time for all the age levels etc. So we're all in full gear sitting in the locker rooms. We come out...to a full brawl. Among women. As my mother explained to me. Mom A: Go son go! Mom B opposing team: Why don't you shut your fucking mouth? Mom A: No I'm just cheering on my son. Mom B Closed fists punched her in the mouth. Dad's fight. Parents falling out of the bleechers. This is the first game of the season. It might've been the first game in our age group iirc. Youth Roller Hockey. Btw we were allowed to play pickup hockey with the adults for awhile until a few shitheads beat the fuck out of kids because they kept scoring. Happened on ice too. Really sucked because I used to learn so much from the older guys.
Son’s basketball season is over, but tee-ball and soccer start this weekend. I’ll have the thread queued up for the next 6 weeks or so.
An ISU woman’s basketball player has a notoriously shitty dad. Think she was like a 5 star player from Iowa City and Iowa didn’t recruit her bc of her dad. A few stories on him: Apparently went into a woman’s locker room after a game to go after the coach https://iowa.forums.rivals.com/threads/joens-dad.384895/ https://www.1630kcjj.com/2020/12/10...eets-at-former-players-player-families-media/ https://www.1630kcjj.com/2020/10/15...harge-after-incident-at-neighboring-business/
I was at an adult slow pitch softball tournament years ago and one of the rounded up players attacked an 110 lb umpire. Needed four players and umps to pull him off. I almost sure charges were filed.
I refereed 2nd grade girls basketball when I was in high school. Those girls had no idea how to play. Constant travels, double dribbles, running out of bounds, etc. It was tough to find a happy medium on when to blow the whistle and when to just let them play. I would let most of it go but called the most egregious stuff. If I called even 50% of the stuff I could have the games would never end. It was impossible. A lot of parents (dads) were predictably awful to me. I ended up quitting and never reffed again.
Nah, you can lift and return to the mat. The kid that got slammed for some reason tried to headlock from bottom and ended up in a weird position
Thought I posted about this but can’t find it, Kindergarten basketball game, 2 kids dove for a loose ball and start wrestling for it. The story I was told was one kid had it and the other jumped on him and started pushing him to the ground. Whistle is blown multiple times and kid doesn’t stop. The closest coach is the dad of the pinned kid. He tries to get them apart but then eventually picks up both kids by the jersey and separates them. The next closest coach was the kid doing the pinning Dad. He comes up behind the other coach and puts him in a choke hold until he was pulled off. Lots of drama later he the choking coach was given a 5 year suspension to where he can’t coach and his membership in the league was suspended. Tonight was the annual meeting and he could appeal his membership suspension if enough people voted in his favor. It was like a god damn trump rally. People just kept saying he was nice to me and my kid so he shouldn’t be suspended. They then got angry that his coaching suspension couldn’t be overturned so they started asking for the president of the league. He wasn’t there because he has covid. Parents calling for his head and saying covid isn’t real he’s just using it for an excuse to not be there. Was an absolute shit show.
Good one tonight. Club is hosting a soccer tournament this weekend. On the field next to ours El Tiburon was playing a team from the cesspool known as Royal Palm Beach. After the game one of their parents comes after their coach. It’s broken up and the dad is sent to the parking lot. The dad then waits for the coach in the parking lot and jumps him. Fight ensues etc until it’s broken up. The dad was upset with his son’s lack of playing time so he attacked his son’s coach.
I missed the action because we were having a postgame team meeting. Funny thing is that team beat us 3-1. Imagine if they had lost.
I thought I was in for one this morning when I saw what appeared to be parents passing around shooters at 9 am. Turned out to be shots of wheatgrass or some type of juice.
Another coach got suspended and went scorched earth on his response Also curious how an incident reported two months ago got swept under the rug. It was reported that a Coach showed up to the fields extremely intoxicated. While in the parking lot he decided to relieve himself in the road in front of the north batting cages in front of a Girls softball team who was using the cages. There was also multiple families around as it was the transition between the 5pm and 7pmpractices. This individual then passed out in his car with his son in the back seat. A neighbor and friend was called to pick up the child while the dad slept it off in the parking lot. Multiple witnesses provided email addresses and phone numbers and offered confidential statements. None of them were reached out to. A coach was informed because there wasn't a picture of this coach caught during the act that nothing could be done. As I'm sure you all know, this act carries heavy consequences with the law including public urination as well as indecent exposure punishable with fines as well as joining a sexual offender registry. Sad part, is this is the second time this has taken place. The first time was in the pavillion behind F4 while two mothers were with their daughters playing on the playground. There are witnesses to this incident also and are willing to provide statements.
Evals for 8yo Little League yesterday. Watching/listening to the other coaches ooohing and aaahing over 8yo kids was a nice reminder why I participate. It’s to keep my kids away from those jackasses.
I’m coaching my first graders church team. I have a team of 7 first graders, a 5k and two third graders. Other teams have maybe two or three first graders and the rest second and third graders. You can imagine the disadvantage we are at. I worked my ass off to keep our first few games competitive and the kids played hard. Last week we played against a guy that stacked his roster with all older kids. We got punched in the mouth. One kid about had a nervous breakdown. I have two kids that can dribble and we couldn’t even get the ball over half court. the opposing coach has history with my assistant coach and was screaming at his kids DONT LET THEM SCORE as we were trying to complete a pass while down twenty with under a minute to play. That is burned into my memory. Can’t decide if I was a bitch for not saying something in the moment.
I don’t think so, I think in any youth situation it’s just best to take the high road especially with the age groups you were dealing with. Maybe if you guys have a coaches meeting or something you could bring it up.
My kid played tackle football for the first time this year (upper grade school). Another team is notorious for this. Son’s team actually played well against them for most of the game but made 2-3 mistakes that allowed it to get out of hand by the end. Son’s team was down 21 and the other coach called a deep pass with 7 seconds left to score again. Like, bruh. That coach always does that sort of thing, Don’t be that douche, guys.
Our 8U coach pitch baseball league had a rule that every kid on your roster had to bat at least once, with 12 kids on a team. We were playing a team that we were tied for second place, winner plays the title. Opposing coach was reminded twice in the last two innings to play his worst player and didn’t. He thought he could bully the 16 year old umpire and lie that he did. The league rule is that you play an extra inning and allow the kid to bat. He told the kid to hold the bat between his legs like it was his dick. Idiot didn’t realize a dozen parents are filming him being an ass on their phones. He got banned from coaching.
My son’s opponent in rec league basketball yesterday had kids that would yell whenever his team shot the ball. Not technically illegal on non-free throws (I don’t think) but I’ve always thought that was unsportsmanlike behavior.
In the moment I was just too consumed with trying to help my guys out that I was aware of it and that was it. My wife said all the parents in the stands could hear it and this guy is know for his win at all costs, stomp the opposing team no matter what attitude. Lame. like I told my wife, is it an asshole move to have your team playing hard until the end? No. Is that how and asshole would act and something an asshole would do, absolutely.
At 8U coach pitch the entire roster should bat at equal number of times. Benching kids at that age is insane to me. Beyond not playing kids who are a safety risk at 1B they should all be moved around to, you know, develop. Does that coach wear baseball pants? I coach my son’s AAA travel team and we bat the full 12, make sure kids get at least 1 inning per game in the IF and sit no more than 2. Shooting for a minimum of 10 innings pitched per kid this year too. We may lose some games due to it, but they’re 10, who (that matters) gives a fuck?
Do y’all’s leagues have stipulations in place that allow for EH slots and free subbing? We do that routinely in the second game of doubleheaders at the MS level so everybody can get some time on the field/at the plate without lineup headaches.
5yo is playing baseball this spring. When did rec league start playing spring/fall and not int the summer? Is this due to all the travel teams?
Think so. About to start 3rd Season with my now 5yo. Tryouts next weekend and games start in March. I wouldn't want to be playing 11am games in July.
It was 30+ years ago, but we had THE WORST player in Little League on our team. Great kid, but no coordination at all, as in “would trip while trying to walk and chew gum.” Nicest kid, great parents, but just an average human (and below average at any and all sports). Had to bat and/or play an inning in the field every game according to the rules. Our coach always made it happen. Kid played 3-4 years (whatever was max) in the league with no hits. Last game of the year, last inning, kid gets to bat. Hits and absolute dribbler down the 3rd base line, catcher and 3B can’t get it, and he somehow doesn’t trip and fall on his way to first. First hit in 4 years in the last game. Game wasn’t over, but we all rushed the field like he had gotten the game-winning hit. Other teams’ parents were pissed as hell. Coach had a pinch runner for him as we carried him into the dugout on our shoulders. Just so much bitterness from the other team, coaches, and parents.
5 yo tryouts jesus. Guess I shouldnt be that surprised these days but when I came up travel ball (in FL) didn’t really start til 9.
