I’d think they would still be looking for 3 more DBs plus the kid from Ft Wayne who is an “ath”

    Probable all safeties remaining

Brandon Streeter, former Clemson offensive coordinator
If Notre Dame chooses to promote Parker to offensive coordinator, this hire could fit as quarterbacks coach. Streeter got just one season as offensive coordinator at Clemson before Dabo Swinney fired him last month to hire Garrett Riley. But before that, Streeter was the position coach and main recruiter for Trevor Lawrence, DJ Uiagalelei and Cade Klubnik. He put in eight years on Swinney’s staff at Clemson, which means he overlapped with Notre Dame receivers coach Chansi Stuckey in 2019-20

His fit within the staff as a position coach shouldn’t be a challenge. Hiring Streeter as a full-time offensive coordinator following last season’s performance at Clemson would be a harder sell, which is why he’s listed here only as a quarterbacks coach candidate should the new coordinator lead another position.

The Rees hate goes way too far on Twitter, but so does Golic Jr. with his white knighting. And he does the sparky condescending thing to fans, exactly like Tim Brown just did to him. (Though admittedly not directly.) I thought it was funny, even if I'm not 100% on board with his take on Tommy. I don't think it was the calls that were predictable, so much as what the QBs did with them. Other guys have always been open. Well, at least since Stuckey's been here to teach them how to get open.

    II's list of candidates

The following coaches are considered potential candidates to replace Tommy Rees as Notre Dame’s offensive coordinator.

Tim Prister of Irish Illustrated and Tom Loy of 247Sports compiled this list.

    JOE MOORHEAD
    [IMG]
    (Photo: USA TODAY Sports)
    • Age: 49

    • Current/last job: Akron head coach – 2-10 in 2022

    • Other top assignments: Head coach Mississippi State (14-12 in 2018-19); head coach Fordham (38-13 in 2012-15); Oregon OC/QB (2020-21), Penn State OC/QB (2016-17)

    • Summary: Joe Moorhead became a hot commodity after his Penn State offenses (2016-17) placed 21st in the country in scoring at 37.6 points per game and 6th at 41.1. His offensive prowess landed him the Mississippi State head coaching job in 2018 when Dan Mullen took over at Florida. Mullen was a tough act to follow at a place like Starkville. He finished above .500 in seven of his last eight seasons, including a 34-18 mark his final four seasons.

Moorhead went 8-5 in his first season at Mississippi State and 6-7 in his second, which led to his firing as did disciplinary and academic issues with his team and perhaps some sparring sessions with the media that prompted the Pittsburgh native to say that they’d have to “drag his yankee ass out of here,” which they did.

The year before his arrival as offensive coordinator at Oregon – a position for which Tommy Rees interviewed as well – the Ducks were No. 16 in the country in scoring offense at 35.4 points per game. The year after his tenure (2022), they were No. 9 at 38.8 points per game. During Moorhead’s two seasons in Eugene, the Ducks were No. 41 in scoring at 31.3 and No. 42 at 31.4.

Moorhead took over the Akron head coaching position in 2022. He inherited a program that went 5-37 in the previous four seasons. The Zips were 2-10 this past season. They improved from the No. 107 scoring offense to No. 81 in ’22. They went from No. 119 in scoring offense to No. 108.

Considered a good fit for Notre Dame with a definite interest in the job three years ago when Rees was elevated to offensive coordinator by Brian Kelly.

    • Age: 43

    • Current/last job: Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator (2019-22)

    • Other top assignments: Arizona Cardinals interim OC (2018), Arizona Cardinals QB coach (2017-18)

    • Summary: A 12,000-yard passer with 89 touchdowns at Marshall from 1998-2002 before his No. 7 overall selection in the 2003 NFL draft by the Jacksonville Jaguars. Threw for nearly 11,000 yards and 58 touchdowns, most of which came in his first three years in the league before hanging around the NFL spanning 12 seasons.

All of his coaching has taken place in the NFL since 2016, most recently with the Buccaneers and QB-Tom Brady. As offensive coordinator the last four seasons, Tampa Bay has been No. 29 in scoring offense in 2019, No. 8 in 2020, No. 5 in 2021 and No. 13 this past season.

Recently released by Buccaneers HC-Todd Bowles after a season of injuries at offensive skill positions with a 45-year-old quarterback.

    • Age: 58

    • Current/last job: Utah offensive coordinator (2019-present)

    • Other top assignments: Vanderbilt OC/RB (2018), Vanderbilt OC/TE (2016-17), Vanderbilt OC/QB (2013-14), Wisconsin OC/QB (2013-14), San Diego State OC (2011-12), Cal OC/QB (2009-10), Utah OC (2005-08), Oregon OC (2002-04), Fresno State OC (1998-2001)

    • Summary: Well-traveled Ogden, Utah native with stops in the Midwest (Wisconsin) and South (Vanderbilt). The architect of the Utes’ No. 11 scoring offense in 2022 and No. 14 scoring offense in 2021.

Over the last 14 seasons as an offensive coordinator – he’s been a coordinator every season since 2002 – nine of his offenses have finished among the nation’s top 50, including No. 50 and No. 38 at Utah in 2019-20, No. 27 and No. 29 at Wisconsin in 2013-14, No. 36 and No. 45 at San Diego State in 2011-12, and No. 47 at Cal in 2009.

This is Ludwig’s second stint at Utah under HC-Kyle Whittingham. He first served under Whittingham at Utah from 2005-2008. The Utes were 12th nationally in scoring average in 2008.

Ludwig has worked under head coaches Whittingham, Derek Mason at Vanderbilt, Gary Andersen at Wisconsin, Rocky Long at San Diego State and Jeff Tedford at Cal.

    • Age: 50

    • Current/last job: Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator (2019-22)

    • Other top assignments: Baltimore Ravens assistant HC/TE (2018), Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator (2015-16, San Francisco 49ers OC (2011-14), Stanford associate HC (2009-10), Houstan Texans QB coach (2004-05), Houston Texans TE coach (2002-03)

    • Summary: Veteran NFL coordinator/assistant coach with a brief college background under HC-Jim Harbaugh at Stanford when the Cardinal were No. 7 in the country in scoring in 2011 at 43.2 points per game.

Coordinated a top 13 or better NFL scoring offense seven of the 10 seasons he’s been in charge of the unit, including the No. 1 scoring offense in the NFL in 2019 (Ravens), No. 8 (49ers) in 2012, No. 9 (49ers) in 2011, and No. 10 (Bills) in 2016.

Ravens’ offensive production each of the past two seasons (No. 17 in scoring in 2021, No. 20 in 2022) was tied to QB-Lamar Jackson missing 10 of 34 games due to injury.

    SEAN LEWIS
    [IMG]
    (Photo: USA TODAY Sports)
    • Age: 36

    • Current/last job: Colorado OC/QB coach

    • Other top assignments: Kent State HC (2018-22), Syracuse co-OC/QB (2016-17), Bowling Green co-OC/QB (2015)

    • Summary: Poor timing for the Irish as the promising young coach who just accepted a position as offensive coordinator at Colorado in early December under HC-Deion Sanders.

Has an impressive track record as a co-offensive coordinator at Bowling Green and Syracuse, as well as the architect of a Kent State revival as head coach from 2018-22. As co-offensive coordinator at Bowling Green in 2015, the Falcons were sixth in scoring offense at 42.2 points per game.

After a 2-10 season in his first year as head coach at Kent State – matching his predecessor’s (Paul Haynes’) mark from 2017 -- Lewis went 22-21 over the next four seasons.

In 2020 – the pandemic year in which the Golden Flashes played just four games (3-1) – Kent State had the No. 1 scoring offense (49.8 ppg.) and No. 1 total offense (606.5 ypg.). In 2021 – a 14-game schedule – the Golden Flashes were No. 30 in scoring (33.) and No. 5 in total offense (493.4). They followed that up with the No. 42 total offense in 2022.

Sanders’ timing at Colorado landed him a very promising young offensive mind. But if Notre Dame came calling…

    JASON CANDLE
    [IMG]
    (Photo: USA TODAY Sports)
    • Age: 43

    • Current/last job: Toledo HC (2016-present)

    • Other top assignments: Toledo OC/QB/AHC (2014-15)

    • Summary: Candle acquitted himself very well in Notre Dame Stadium in 2021, falling just a couple minutes short of pulling off the upset as a 17-point underdog in a 32-29 loss. Candle is 54-32 as a head coach and has posted no worse than a .500 record in seven seasons, including an 11-3 record in 2017.

His offenses have been sensational at Toledo. His scoring offenses ranked No. 19 in 2016, No. 16 in 2017, No. 9 in 2018, No. 21 in 2020, No. 26 in 2021 and No. 44 this past season. His total offenses ranked no lower than 38th in his first six seasons, including No. 7 in 2016, No. 14 in 2017 and No. 13 in 2020.

The Irish might have to hurry if they want a seat at the table for Candle. The Miami Hurricanes are interested as well.

    CLINT TRICKETT
    [IMG]
    (Photo: 247Sports)
    • Age: 31

    • Current/last job: Marshall OC/QB coach (2022-present)

    • Other top assignments: Marshall passing game coordinator WR (2021), Florida Atlantic co-offensive coordinator/QB

    • Summary: The former Florida State/West Virginia quarterback has made a quick splash in the coaching ranks. After a stop at East Mississippi Community College as quarterbacks coach in 2015-16, he landed his first FBS full-time job as tight ends coach at Florida Atlantic from 2017-19. He was elevated to co-offensive coordinator in 2020.

Trickett was on the headset in Notre Dame Stadium on Sept. 10 of last season when the Thundering Herd upset the Irish, 26-21. Marshall rushed for 219 yards against the Irish – the second-highest total versus Notre Dame (behind Navy) in 2022.

The Thundering Herd struggled to score throughout the season, however, finishing 90th, although they were 58th in total offense. As co-offensive coordinator in ’21, Trickett helped lead the Marshall offense to the No. 30 scoring unit and No. 16 total offense.

    RYAN GRUBB
    [IMG]
    (Photo: K.Grinolds/Dawgman.com)
    • Age: 47

    • Current/last job: Washington offensive coordinator/QB coach (2022-present)

    • Other top assignments: Fresno State AHC/OC/QB (2020-21)

    • Summary: After bouncing around at the likes of Kingsley-Pierson High School in Iowa, South Dakota State, and Sioux Falls (NAIA) before landing gigs at Eastern Michigan as the offensive line coach (2014-16) and then Fresno State as the eventual offensive coordinator, Grubb made a splash at Washington under first-year Huskies head coach Kalen DeBoer, who dominated at NAIA Sioux Falls with a 67-3 record.

The Huskies were No. 7 in scoring offense (39.7 ppg.) and No. 2 in total offense (516.2) in the DeBoer/Grubb system this past season, benefitting from a sensational season by QB-Michael Penix Jr., who transferred from Indiana. Let’s call it great teamwork among coaches/quarterback/offense that returned eight starters.

How much of the success should be credited to DeBoer or Grubb is up for debate. But Grubb did interview with Alabama before Tommy Rees landed the job, so there must be validity to Grubb’s rising star.

    MIKE DENBROCK
    [IMG]
    (Photo: Matt Cashore, 247Sports)
    • Age: 59

    • Current/last job: LSU offensive coordinator (2022)

    • Other top assignments: Cincinnati offensive coordinator/TE (2018-21), Cincinnati OC/QB (2017), Notre Dame AHC/OC/WR (2012-16), Washington OL (2005-08), Notre Dame OT/TE coach (2002-04)

    • Summary: Tour of duty No. 3 at Notre Dame for the veteran assistant coach who got his start at Grand Valley State with Brian Kelly? Unlikely, particularly with Denbrock well-situated with Kelly at LSU in the mighty SEC. But Irish Illustrated was informed that Denbrock was told he’d get a look if interested, although it probably would cost Notre Dame a healthy fee to get Denbrock out of his contract.

That’s probably not worth it with a distinguished group from which to choose, but Denbrock is a great soldier/leader whose love for Notre Dame has been proven over time.

    GERAD PARKER
    [IMG]
    (Photo: Matt Cashore, 247Sports)
    • Age: 42

    • Current/last job: Notre Dame tight ends (2022)

    • Other top assignments: West Virginia OC/WR (2020-21), Penn State WR coach (2019)

    • Summary: Elevated from wide receiver coach to offensive coordinator at West Virginia in 2020. The previous season, the Mountaineers finished 116th in scoring offense at 20.6 points per game and 119th in total offense at 319.1 yards per game.

Under Parker in 2020, West Virginia improved to 82nd nationally at 26.5 points per game – nearly a touchdown more than ’19 – and No. 50 in total offense at 412.6 yards per game, or 93 yards more per game. Additionally, the Mountaineers went from 119th in red-zone touchdown percentage (47.0) the year before his elevation to 71st with a 60.9 red-zone touchdown percentage -- a 14 percent increase.

In 2019 pre-Parker, the Mountaineers were No. 128 in rushing at 73.2 yards per game with a 2.63-yard average per carry. In Parker’s first season as OC, West Virginia improved to No. 92 in rushing at 135.1 yards per game – a 62-yard increase – and averaged 3.77 yards per carry – more than a yard per carry better. The passing game showed a 58-yard uptick as well.

In 2021, West Virginia took a step back in the rushing attack at 123.6 yards per game with three new offensive line starters. The Mountaineers, however, continued their ascent in the passing game (No. 55) and red-zone touchdown percentage (No. 37) while averaging the same number of points as the previous season.

Parker was interim head coach at Purdue in 2016 after the firing of Darrell Hazell. He lost all six of his games as the substitute for Hazell. Parker is not expected to land the offensive coordinator’s job at Notre Dame for the 2022 season.

    • Current/last job: Philadelphia Eagles quarterbacks coach (2021-present)

    • Other top assignments: Florida offensive coordinator (2020), Florida QB coach (2018-19), Houston OC/QB (2017), Mississippi State QB coach (2014-16), Utah OC/QB (2012-13)

    • Summary: Former Utah quarterback has ascended the ranks with OC duties at his alma mater, the Houston Cougars and Florida Gators before landing a gig with next weekend’s Super Bowl participant under HC-Nick Sirianni.

Coordinated the nation’s No. 13 scoring offense (39.8 ppg.) and No. 9 total offense (509.0 ypg.) at Florida in 2020. Also headed up the Houston offense in ’17 with the No. 40 total offense. At Utah as a youngster in ’13 (age 25), he had the No. 37 scoring offense and the No. 55 total offense.

    • Current/last job: Ohio State offensive coordinator/WR (2023)

    • Other top assignments: Ohio State passing game coordinator/WR (2022), Ohio State WR coach (2018-21)

    • Summary: The Ohio State alum and former Marcus Freeman teammate with the Buckeyes was just elevated to OC under HC-Ryan Day. Will Day allow Hartline to have full-time play-calling duties without previous experience doing so? He’s not a quarterbacks coach, which also would work against Hartline at Notre Dame, at least at the present configuration of the coaching staff. The timing doesn’t seem right.
