Maybe Troy can move his centers as easily as he can second round draft picks? This is just going to make an unwatchable team even more unwatchable this year.
Tanking is obviously the right move, but today just felt like Weaver is completely directionless with the roster.
If we really traded Bey and Knox and only got back Wiseman who plays same position as one of our only promising players and by the way is going to make 8 Million MORE than Bey next year, I'm really questioning Weaver now moreso than ever
For sure, but they were already tanking. I guess they can tank harder? Victor or Scoot or whoever better work out or this team is going to be tanking again in 2 years.
Brandon Miller would be a nice pickup in draft too, especially now we've moved on from Bey. But this team has problems. Also didn't move our 31 and 33 year olds for any assets, and didn't dump Noel for anything and will probably end up buying him out. Weaver gets an F for this deadline
I think it was pretty clear they wanted to move on from Bey. He didn’t show what they were looking for. I’m glad we got Wiseman over Reddish, but the Clippers got Plumlee
Even if you want to move on from Bey, we turned him into a bust center AND 8 mil less in cap space next year. You gotta do better than that. Basically turned a 4 mil bust into a 12 mil bigger bust
Beard is a bigger Weaver homer than Sankofa and Edwards. He just isn't a beat writer any more because he's an editor now.
I'm pretty sure the entire point of "you can't judge Weaver's moves in the moment" is to give themselves time to come up with excuses for why failure is okay. Like "sure Killian is bad, but look at 7th overall picks historically and it's not really a disappointment because of a lot of them are bad!!"
He posted this once the trade was first announced then backtracked with the tweet above after finding out there wasn't more
Pistons about to have 24.5 mil tied up in two back up bigs who were former 2nd overall picks who busted
Imagine if we won the lottery in 2020 and took Wiseman #1. I’m sure everyone would have different opinion of Weaver Wiseman, who was the No. 2 overall pick in 2020, has long had fans in Detroit’s front office. According to team sources who were granted anonymity to speak freely, Wiseman was the top player on the Pistons’ big board during the 2020 NBA Draft process.
Benching pretty much the lone bright spot on the team this season in favor of bust that was essentially given away to avoid the luxury tax.
That's hilarious after part of the beat writers defense was "we need a backup true center" . Now we either benching Duren for him or playing him at the 4...
By my count we now have 5 of our roster spots taken up by guys over 6'8" who play in the paint and can't shoot. And yes I'm including B33f St3w there. Call them whatever position you want to, but playing two of them together probably isn't ideal.... These guys will say anything to avoid calling out Weaver
Would you guys be so mad if our beat writers weren't so bad? This will help us lose more games this year and will end up with Wiseman being decent or being gone in a year. Bey isn't Khris Middleton, he's a mediocre talent we can get for an exception in a couple years.
True. Bey's lack of development in really every part of his game since his rookie year was extremely disappointing.
I think Detroit teams have been so bad so long we no longer get enjoyment from them, our enjoyment comes from trashing the beat writers now. But no matter how you want to spin today's trade was bad. Dumping Bey is fine, dumping Bey for a bigger bust who takes away like 8 mil in cap space next year makes little sense.
I would say that Wiseman hasn't proven he's bad yet, just insinuated it. And being rid if Knox is a net positive. And every minute Bey played, his value went down. I don't care about cap space next year - an extra $8M expiring might be a good thing.
Trust me, I don't think every move Weaver makes is a chess move, but there is a world where this is better than not trading Bey and Knox for Wiseman
I think the fan base is as mad about no other moves as much as that one in particular. Team lacks clear direction and is now relying on winning the lottery again for any hope to be competitive soon. Think a lot of people are as disappointed that their idea Weaver was some great genius GM is fading and are losing hope moreso than thinking he's terrible
I’d be less annoyed if we didn’t make any moves today, but whatever. I said it the other day but at this point Weaver bringing in a new coach is the most important thing within his control. If Casey comes back next season, Weaver isn’t at all serious about competing for the playoffs.
Considering the beat and even some players talking about how they aren't making moves because they can be "really good" next year, if Casey is the coach next year that's really sending a bad signal to the fanbase. If the team doesn't take a huge step forward next year, Weaver job may be in serious trouble
It's not just that he didn't write it. It's that he and other beat writers routinely praised Bey for expanding his game beyond just being a 3-and-D guy, and all along the way they insinuated or flat out said that Casey and the Pistons wanted him to do that. That paragraph made me more upset than the rest of the stuff in that story.
Me too. But I don't think you and I have been filling up the thread over the last 1.5 seasons talking about how great it is that "Bey is a bucket now" because he doesn't just do the things he's supposed to be good at.
Just imagine the paragraph they have ready for when we move Hay3s in the off-season or about how fed up they were with St3w taking 3s if we move him
Hollinger killed Weaver Spoiler Tier I: You can never have too many centers from Memphis If you’re a failed big man who was selected second in the draft, apparently you have a home in Detroit. First Marvin Bagley, now James Wiseman. At least now we know Chet Holmgren has a landing spot if things don’t work out in Oklahoma City. What’ so wild about Detroit acquiring Wiseman is that the Pistons already have a young, promising center from the University of Memphis. Jalen Duren is barely 19 — nearly three years younger than the “prospect” Detroit acquired — and is already a better player. You have your center of the future, Detroit! You don’t need another one! The other bizarre part is that the Pistons didn’t trade Alec Burks or Bojan Bogdanović, apparently eyeing a sharp move up the standings a year from now. Whatever you think of how realistic this approach is, the cognitive dissonance here is jarring. I’m sorry, but, “We’re trying to win next year,” and, “We traded Saddiq Bey for James Wiseman,” are not compatible statements. Even if Bey isn’t a long-term starter, he was much more likely to help next season, costs half as much and doesn’t overlap with two other good young players at the same position. Oh well. As long as Isaiah Stewart gets shoehorned into more minutes as a pretend four, I’m happy. The irony is that I think the Wiseman gamble would have made a lot more sense for Portland, another team involved in this same trade; the Blazers could have done Gary Payton II for Wiseman straight up and dispensed with the Hawks and Pistons pieces of their four-team trade. (They would have had to dump a contract to get back under the tax, though, and Wiseman’s $12 million salary might have been a problem next year.) Wiseman has shown some improvement in Golden State, but the basic issues of hands, awareness and feel are never really going away; most analytic methods still rate him among the league’s least effective players. For the rest of this season, at least, he’ll be an elite tank commander, but asking next season’s coaching staff (whomever it is) to win immediately will result in Wiseman on the end of the bench by Thanksgiving. In the meantime, if the Pistons weren’t keeping Bey, this was a major missed opportunity to get a return on a rotation-caliber young player with a good contract.
I don't like Hollinger's writing style and how arrogant he is, but I can't argue with anything in that and it makes me sad. I think I would feel better about it if we traded Stewart. Or if I had any hope that we would trade him in the summer. But our love for him seems unconditional at this point and it makes all of our other players worse for it.
Unfortunately it looks like it is going to come down to whether we can get Victor in the draft. With him ( and scoot to a lesser extent but there is some maneuvering that would need to be done) our roster would be in pretty nice shape just need a solid 3&D piece we could probably overpay for in FA Most like we pick 3-6 and got a solid big wing. We would need Cade to his absolute ceiling and continue strong development from Duran Ivey and the rookie wing. Not out of feasible possibility but not great odds
If we don’t get Victor there are still plenty of players in the draft that will improve this team. It’s not a very good team, there are not many assets here and I think, based on reaction to the Bey trade No one seems to understand that. We aren’t going to be close to contending next year or the year after
