Here is day 1, day 4, day oh fuck we got the most rain in 24 hours ever and yesterday which was day 15. I’m at my wits end with this pool company. 3 dead frogs have been shot out of the pipes already. What the fuck is going on.

No. They are literally in the pipes. Not the pool. I’d take the cover off a pipe and a dead frog would shoot out.

Are they are getting sucked down your skimmers some how? Would think they’d be getting caught in your basket and drowning there.
And what do you mean by take a cover off your pipe? A return line to the pool? Something else?

Specifically these. I take the outer layer off and the frog shoots out. Sorry for using the wrong terminology.

I have a basket and there hasn't been a single frog in there. I honestly think they found their way into the line somehow during the building process and then died in there.

Bizarre. I don’t see how frogs could be getting in between your filter and return line. So yeah, must be in there from the build. I guess let them shoot out until they stop? Ha

my concern is frogs that are stuck somewhere in the middle of the pipe. I had to use a stick to break apart a frog to get it out yesterday.

Super random question but your pool design is super close to what I think we'll end up with. I'm breaking ground soon on my new house and am trying to get a better picture of total footprint of everything. Random question, do you know how many feet deep your entire pool area takes up depth wise? Essentially from the back of your house to the other side of the pool.

Not sure exactly, I can get out the tape measure tonight. But we pushed it back as far as possible because we don't know anyone who uses the space behind their pool for anything other than landscaping (we have the golf course view) so we wanted as much deck space as possible.

I'm in a similar but not similar situation. I'm digging into the side of a hill for my house so I'll have a retaining wall on the back side.

I'm not thrilled at all with the retaining wall. Terrified someone is going to fall off the back end. Find some way to have a buffer so people don't fall.

The pool area will be dug into the hill. My lot is 5 acres so I have room to play with the layout but currently between this and digging the basement out I'm going to have something like 3,000 yards of dirt to put somewhere so just trying to game plan it all.

Question for people that know a heck of a lot more about pools than I do.

When we bought our house in October, the inspection said that the skimmer had a decent sized crack in it which was causing a bit of leaking which could turn into a massive leak. We got a credit from the seller, and quotes to fix are about 3k (covered by our credit). While we were at it, the pool guy said we have old copper piping in the pool and the copper piping presents a number of issues, and he would re-pipe the whole underground system to be all PVC (which costs a lot since they’d have to break a lot of concrete). He made it sound like it was a big deal, but I couldn’t tell if he was just up-selling us

He also suggested we re-do the jets in the jacuzzi since they are old and get an automation system so we can turn the jets and heat on without turning it on in the back heater, but those seem like nice to haves. But how important is having PVC vs copper piping? It’s easier to do both the skimmer and piping at once but would be much more expensive

Copper pipes are fine in pools until they are not. When are they not, when the copper corrodes to the point the pipes are leaking. That is when they become an issue. If you get a decent price break for doing it bundled with other work, go for it if you are concerned. Just know that if you stay there long enough, it will have to be done at some point. If that point is now, I have no way of knowing.

Having automation with phone controls is nice but not necessary. You are correct, nice to have but is it worth the price for you.

Bottom line is if any of these things get you to use/enjoy your pool more, go for it if you can afford it. I find my happiest customers are people that actually use their pool. Convenience helps people to use the pool more frequently.

Thanks for the help - I agree, it's hard for us to gauge right now how much more we will use the pool since we moved in around Thanksgiving and probably won't start using the pool much until April or so with the weather. That being said, if we're here for a decade (let's say) and we're going to have to do it anyway, I'd probably prefer to just do it with the skimmer so they only break the concrete once and we don't have this hanging over our heads for years. Good to hear your opinion is we'd probably have to do it anyway at some point vs. the guy totally making up stuff

HuskerInMiami I am afraid that if you have the same niche you are pretty limited in what you can do. That niches is shallow and as such, can only accommodate LED fixtures. LED fixtures are thin, as they do not have traditional bulbs because they use a PCB and LED vodoo. To be able to accommodate traditional pool lights, the niche has to be a deep niche, as the fixtures themselves recess 6”+ back into the wall due to having to design the fixture around a big ass bulb.

I would be interested in seeing your niche if you can remove the fixture.

You can see the difference here in these pics. The one in the video, the guy’s finger will touch the back of niche and his hand is still outside. A traditional light niche like the second picture, your whole hand will disappear into.
