read the espn mailbag from last week and the writer compared the Spence-Crawford anticipation to Mayweather-Pacquiao. it may be the biggest fight to be made today if it ever happens but that it a such a horrible analogy on the scale of both fights. the star power of Mayweather & Pac was on a different level those years. if they would have fought in 2009 or 2010 instead of when they eventually did it would have reached a new high in the sports landscape

It's always funny the way this fight is portrayed in mainstream culture.. Douglas was a huge betting underdog but he was a talented fighter who never could stay motivated. He won almost every round of the fight as well.
You're right but that just kinda lessens how dominant Tyson was perceived to be at the time. The "Douglas 42-1 underdog" is the supposed figure and I wanna say a few people lost significant money ($40k-ish? iirc) betting on Tyson, that number itself is crazy not sure Bama vs an FCS team would go that high. With his natural gifts Douglas should've been a mainstay just below the elite fighters in that era but he was very lazy, showed up I wanna say 15+ pounds heavier and clearly a lotta fat for the $25 million payday against Holyfield after he'd beat Tyson. It was just a perfect storm of Douglas mother passing away (he had zero fear whatsoever), Tyson distracted (banging Japanese groupies not training among other things), and a complete joke of corner. By that time Tyson was fully removed from the head movement Kevin Rooney preached and was just relying on power, him getting dropped by Greg Page in sparring should've set off alarm bells. The HBO broadcast is really amusing in hindsight, even the AP writers thought it'd be an early ko.
Oh I don't mean it as a slight to Tyson at all. I think it's a slight to Tyson to say Douglas was a bum tbh. And like you said, that was also when you started seeing the cracks in Tyson's team. They didn't even have an enswell for the fight and had to fill a latex glove with ice during the fight. Should've stuck with Rooney because I think he cared about Mike and was also a far superior trainer to anything Mike had after.
