Lalonde has some flaws, but our lack of scoring jives with not having a single elite goal scorer. What the staff has done with the D is impressive though, considering Seider is the only guy I think could be a top four D for a good team.

Bertuzzi injury, Vrana problems and to lesser extent injuries to guys like Fabbri have amplified goal scoring issues.

I agree this team needs an elite goal scorer especially if we're done with vrana. Just pointing out as a team I don't think they are as awful offensively at stats suggest if at full strength... but every team deals with injuries

Athletic article, Max went to GR and talked to Vrana. It is long fwiw.

GRAND RAPIDS, Michigan — As speculation swirls about Jakub Vrana’s future with the Red Wings after Detroit waived the forward last month, even the 26-year-old winger doesn’t know what the organization is thinking regarding his future with the NHL team.
“That’s the thing, I don’t think I know anything,” Vrana told The Athletic. “I don’t have any source — I (am not) even looking for those, because it’s pointless. I mean, nobody knows anything. People can speculate each day, and people are doing that, and that’s just how it is. But at the end of the day, there’s only a few people that are running these things, and they make those decisions. And you can speculate all day long, but then at the end of the day, you’re not making those (decisions).”
Vrana was waived in early January following his return from the NHL and NHLPA’s player assistance program and is currently playing for Detroit’s AHL affiliate in Grand Rapids. He has recently begun to heat up following a quiet start there — entering the weekend, he had four goals in his last four games and six in his last seven.
That Vrana has found his scoring touch should come as no surprise — while he has played limited games for the team since being acquired at the 2021 trade deadline, he has lived up to his reputation as a dangerous goal scorer when in the lineup. He has 22 goals in 39 games in that span. The fact he has only played 39 games for Detroit is mainly a result of his shoulder surgery last season — which cost him all but 26 games — and his time in the player assistance program, which he entered after two games this season.

Even while he was out, though, it was expected Vrana would return to Detroit’s lineup and play in the top six for a team that lacks high-end scoring ability. Instead, while on a conditioning stint in Grand Rapids upon his return, the team decided to waive him as their injury-laden lineup got healthy and they needed a roster spot.
The fact that the offensively-deficient Red Wings were willing to lose a player with so much offensive talent immediately raised eyebrows — and real questions about whether he would have a future with the team. But while Vrana does not know what the team’s brass may be thinking, he certainly gave the impression he wants a future with the franchise.
“To be honest with you, I’m a proud Red Wing,” Vrana said. “I love to have that logo on my chest. I wish I could play for them for the rest of my life — I mean that’s what I want, obviously. Everybody does. (But) that’s looking way too ahead of us right now. I’m just focusing from day to day, and to be (a) part of the team up there again, and the rest will come. I tell you, like I can’t control whatever happens outside, with what people’s decisions are. I’m just a player, and everybody knows that I want to play there.”

When Red Wings coach Derek Lalonde was asked about Vrana and netminder Alex Nedeljkovic (who was also waived in January) earlier this week, he deferred the question to Detroit general manager Steve Yzerman, who has not been made available to media all season and has yet to explain his thinking on Vrana. Lalonde described the situations of Vrana and Nedeljkovic as “a day-to-day, week-to-week type (of) evaluation.”
When Vrana’s recent scoring surge was mentioned, Lalonde said: “Of late he’s been scoring a lot. He also went almost a month with one goal in that league. So yeah, of course you’re constantly evaluating and seeing where things are at. And I think a lot goes into it. Like (winger Jonatan) Berggren put a wrench in a lot of plans, we probably didn’t expect him to be here right now, and that’s a roster spot. You could probably argue Elmer (Söderblom) could be up here, the way he’s been scoring and playing of late. So the luxury of having some depth is a good thing right now.”
In the time since that press conference, Detroit has run into some injury trouble, including top-line winger Lucas Raymond being day-to-day with a lower-body injury. With the team set to depart for a long road trip beginning in western Canada on Sunday, they may need to call a forward up from Grand Rapids if they aren’t sure about Raymond’s availability. But it’s not clear whether that forward would more likely be Vrana, Söderblom or the recently-waived Adam Erne (who Detroit previously kept on the NHL roster while waiving Vrana and sending down Söderblom).
As Vrana alluded, the fact no one from the Red Wings has given any public insight into the team’s thinking on the matter means his situation has been ripe for speculation — and, indeed, the optics of the team placing him on waivers don’t favor the idea of him being in the team’s long-term plans. And while a potential decision on who to call up from Grand Rapids could be another window into Detroit’s thinking, it would still be an incomplete one.

While no other NHL team claimed Vrana on waivers, it’s possible the team could try and trade him while retaining salary on his contract. But the extra year of term remaining on his deal could be an obstacle to doing so — as could be the fact teams are only able to retain salary on three contracts in a season, meaning doing so on Vrana would limit Detroit’s options at the trade deadline.
A buyout would be another potential outcome if the team does not see Vrana in its plans and would cost the Red Wings about $1.4 million against the cap next season and about $1.9 million against the cap in 2024-25, according to CapFriendly.
But to Vrana’s point, right now, it is not clear what the team is thinking. And in the meantime, he seems to be embracing his time with the Griffins.
“I’m working hard, trying to help this team,” Vrana said entering the weekend. “Right now we have really two important games against Manitoba, and I think this team has big potential. We want to be in (the) playoffs here, and we’re doing the best (to get there), and I let the other things handle (themselves). I’m just focusing on every day, coming here, have fun and just keep winning games.”
Griffins coach Ben Simon said that when Vrana first arrived in Grand Rapids, he was initially in a fragile state and “didn’t know what people would think of him.” The AHL, too, is a very different experience from the NHL, both on the ice and off it.

“It’s harder to find open ice, you’re playing three games in four nights,” Simon said. “You’re not flying on Red Bird One having a steak after the game — you’re jumping on the bus and (having) Chipotle. But he’s kind of gotten back to having fun with the game. I think that he was very nervous, and understandably so, but I think he’s kind of found — for all the stuff that he’s gone through — when he comes to the rink, this is kind of his safety place. This is his time just where everything goes away. … I think he’s found that fun in the game again.”
Vrana went his first eight games in Grand Rapids without a goal, and with only one point — and while Vrana is quick to note he was still getting chances during that time, Simon did add, “it was all correlated with, he was cheating (for offense), he wasn’t playing the game the right way, he wasn’t moving his feet, he wasn’t getting to the hard areas.”
“And when you show him through video, and he sat down, you watch every shift, (saying) ‘this is what we’re talking about exactly,’ I think it has helped,” Simon said. “Gaining a little traction, you score a little bit, you get a little confidence. And any goal scorer, once you’re scoring (goals) you feel confident, you feel good about yourself. So I think that he’s got that going right now.”
From afar in Detroit, Lalonde suggested, “I think him scoring goals of late is probably him tightening his game up in other areas, putting himself in that situation.”
And for what it’s worth, even while noting the earlier chances that didn’t go in, Vrana agreed with that assessment.
“I totally agree with him,” Vrana said. “Playing off the puck is so important to be able to put you in the spot where you can produce your offense — where you can get a chance, where you can help the team somehow offensively, and that’s where it all starts, playing without the puck, playing good defense and then the offense will always come.”

It’s a particularly important topic, because being dependable off the puck has been a significant area of emphasis for the Red Wings this season. If the Red Wings are to be taken at their word that an evaluation is still ongoing, those elements would naturally be a part of it when deciding which players in Grand Rapids could help the NHL team while fitting into its identity.
This weekend, Vrana had two assists and was minus-1 this weekend in two Griffins losses.
For now, there is clearly still significant uncertainty surrounding Vrana’s future. But in the present, he is trying to keep his focus more narrow.
“Like I said, I can only control my play and how I work,” Vrana said. “And the people that are above me, they make decisions like that. I don’t make those decisions.”

From Dave Pagnotta (meh source but has been right before)

We’re starting to hear progress in contract negotiations between the Detroit Red Wings and Dylan Larkin, with more movement believed to be coming from the captain’s side.

The Wings presented Larkin with an offer last month that, as I reported at the time, which was not received well. Talks have continued and an eight-year extension is still expected. But word on the street is Larkin’s new deal will come with an AAV figure beginning with an eight, not a nine.

Larkin’s camp has been pushing for a contract worth in the $9 million range, but it seems we’ll see a deal in the mid $8 million range when pen is put to paper.

It’s nice to see us beating up on teams clearly worse than us, that’s a sign of improvement. The odds of making the playoffs are still extremely small, so we will be sellers but I do think we might look to add a player to help us going forward, along with selling off UFAs.

Ideally we move Maata, Bertuzzi, one of Sundqvist/Suter (or both) and then call up Edvinsson, Elmer and Vrana (not going to happen I know).

As frustrating as the team has been during stretches, and the amount of lost games we've had to our top forwards in Bertuzzi, Vrana, Fabbri, etc and one of our goalies in Ned falling off a cliff, we are still on pace to win about 6 more games than last year and have around 14 more points. Know some people, myself included may have expected more, but it's a solid step in right direction. Wings are actually over .500 in games Husso has started, 20 wins 17 losses/ot and so losses

Yeah the team is better just based on team defense. I worry about Husso’s workload this season hurting him next year though, which means getting a goalie this off-season is yet again a priority.

I think Edvinsson will be very strong next season, and assuming we bring back Walman, that should give up a capable top four. Not sure what we do with Chiarot but keeping him as the 5th D is our best move. If another kid like Johansson can come in and move Chiarot to the right, I think that could possibly work.

Realistically though, we have to find goals. I’ll continue to beat the Meier drum even if it’s not realistic.

Team has cap space and some promising prospects who seem on verge of being ready. Hopefully we can get something for Bert and Vrana or work it out with Vrana. But replacing those two with more reliable players would be helpful. Just can't count on them now

A lot of goalies that have played in all three professional leagues say the ECHL is the hardest by far. The main reasons are it’s very much of offense first league, but also the travel is pretty brutal. Condensed schedule and lots of bus trips, it becomes a grind.
