id pay $100-120 a season to watch the rays. Hockey is a considerable less amount of games so I’d pay $80-100 for the lightning

It’s so much easier/cheaper being an out of market fan these days. Unless they’re playing an AZ team I can watch every Yankees and Rangers game for roughly that much and that’s not even accounting for the fact the NHL package is bundled with ESPN+ and my wife can watch the Giants too.

the issue is mlbtv and nhl use the rsn broadcasts. I’m not sure on the agreement there as technically the leagues own the rights to broadcasts so are they paying a fee to broadcast a game on mlbtv?

What seems like the easy answer is for the leagues to just get rid of local blackouts and just buy the rsn broadcast teams, but I am not sure how feasible that is from a profit standpoint for it to be their worthwhile

The amount of people that will do this is tiny though. Teams have been profiting off carriage fees from cable providers when like 90% of the cable providers subscribers dont watch the rsn yet have to pay the rsn. Cable companies have wised up and realized the absurd carriage fees are no longer worth it and they wont lose droves of subscribers.

Toss prices are consistent with mlb tv prices, are they not? But like I said, they rely on rsn to produce the games

Altitude(nuggets and avs) in denver whose not been on comcast in 3 years and says you cant support the infrastructure of an rsn without the cable carriage fees. They say thats why theres no streaming option. Without fluffy cable carriage fees, its going be tough for most these teams to give a quality production. I think the leagues are going have to step in and do an mls like model but not sure how because some markets will still want to own their local rights and not package them.

yeah I agree. I almost think, like others have mentioned, this is a bubble. I would not be shocked if we see teams negotiate with local channels (rays were on ion, wb, upn)

Have you noticed the picture quality on your YouTube TV is improving? Did things seem to be less pixelated last night? You are not alone reports have been coming in that Google has increased the bitrate on YouTube TV to improve its picture quality.

So what is bitrate, and why does it matter? The bitrate of your video stream plays a big part in the quality of the video. Higher bitrates mean there is less pixelation or distortion on the image. Also, fast-moving objects on the screen will appear to be smoother.

This improvement should help make watching sports a lot more enjoyable. Now you should notice that the image on the screen is a lot smoother as players move across the screen or a ball is thrown. This should also help owners with large screens get a better image.

YouTube TV has not confirmed these changes, but Cord Cutters News readers reached out to inform us of the improvement. In our testing, we did see bitrates that were higher than the last time we tested them. Also, users on Reddit have done their own testing and claim to see the same bitrate increase we are seeing.

YouTube TV has promised improvements to the service now that NFL Sunday Ticket will be streaming on YouTube and YouTube TV this fall. It seems that improving the picture quality will be one of the improvements they plan on rolling out.

More accurate would be that NFL told them to get their shit together as a part of their end of the deal and they’re complying.

No change to the actual status, but mentions are increasing. From earlier today via YT CEO:

"And creators will connect with sports fans through coverage and commentary. Sunday Ticket will also come with ways to engage with other fans, including comments, chats, and polls. Coming later this year to YouTube TV: a new feature that lets viewers watch multiple games at once."

Am I reading that as $10/game or $10/team? Where $30 would get you all five local teams? $30/month for one team is not a good deal. That's more than the Sunday Ticket package to see the entire NFL.

this is actually not that bad. I’m in Florida, so we split the heat, magic, rays, marlins, lightning and panthers across 2 RSNs. There was no rhyme or reason for which team was on which (rays were on FoxSportsSun, but lightning on FoxsportsFL. Marlins on FSFL, panthers on Sun) but you got both channels no matter where in Florida.

I could care less for all but the Rays and Lightning, and would pay the$310 for all of their games

Do you get games that are on ESPN/ESPN2/Abc on ESPN+? For instance, if there’s a CFB at 3:30 on ESPN, but I don’t have a subscription that includes ESPN, can I get it on ESPN+ subscription ?

No. You’ll have to verify cable to get those games

it’s likely they’ll do ESPN direct to consumer in the next few years, but that’s likely 30-40/month

Ok so not quite the steal it seemed like. But if you’re a fan of those teams, that’s still a good deal. If all you’re interested in is sports and you can do that for $30/month not bad.

    key details:

    • only available to closed group of testers for next few months
    • only a pre-determined (by YT) mix of channels. Says march madness only at launch
    • sports only
    • handled server side, so no device limitations.

they hope to bring certain improvements to the main YT app (?) based on what they learn here. I would guess thats just because Sunday Ticket will be available inside the main YT app.
