I always tie good schools (and local taxes) into my argument that it keeps our property values up. Doesn’t change people’s minds fully but at least makes them realize there is some good behind them.

I don’t have kids so it doesn’t impact me, but if home schooling your kid or sending your kid to a private/charter school is a big financial burden then you should take the public school choice to save money. That’s the choice.

Anyone with a home should want their area to have quality public schools for home value alone.

That’s a viable scenario in some areas, sure. In others it’s not, and it doesn’t factor in the erosion of the public school system due to charters and vouchers.

I know, I’ve just heard that argument about it helping parents financially. I’m well aware this is going to fuck public schools and that’s what everyone here is against. My dad worked as a teacher and guidance counselor here in Florida for years so I’m well aware this state is moving towards this since the state government loves shitting on public schools. We’ve talked about this and it pisses him off.

for me its more just further inflating the income divide

wealthier ppl will get access to better schools, poors will be less educated. And that obviously favors white people. Or at least i think that is Republicans' aims.

My kids charter school is incredible but it’s a weird situation. KCPS lost their accreditation about a decade back under a crappy administration so charter/private/homeschool were the only options. I love his school because it’s the most diverse in the city. Each class is divided into 4 tables of 5 and each table has at least one white/black/hispanic kid. My 8 year old has the cultural education that I didn’t reach until my 30s (my ENTIRE HS had 1 black and 2 hispanic families total).

All charter schools are bad. All of them. They take away resources from local public schools. They get to pick and choose who they accept and kick out whoever they want. They act like private schools but with public funds. All of them are bad.

“Fixing” education is seriously so easy

    1. Make breakfast and lunch free to all students, including weekends and the summer; and

That’s it. That’s literally all that needs to be done

Yeah KCMO has been way ahead of the curve with shitty public schools. Charters or parochial are really the only good options here. We’re right by Border Star but my wife really wants to do a Catholic school because that’s what she did.

Does anyone have a good article to link on the systematic destruction of the public school systems and the repercussions in the US?

I think it’s parents who think their kid is the only child in the building and that they somehow deserve special treatment or a personalized education or other actions, outside of IEPs and 504s. I moved into an admin role and actually had a parent tell me that anytime I discipline their kid no matter even if it is for breaking out tardy rules I needed to call her and get approval before following through.

I live in a neighborhood in Atlanta that has a charter school. Started out solely to provide for a legacy public housing development that was really neglected. Probably a good cause.

But then it grew and had excess capacity. The area surrounding it was a much older demographic, not many children. So it pulled from surrounding neighborhoods elementary schools. It also then pulled from the local elementary schools.

The demographics started shifting heavily younger. When APS redistricted, they closed two local elementary schools and put them into a single one. Punished the neighborhood for sending their kids to either private or the charter school. Cascading effects closed our local Middle School too.

Luckily growth was strong enough thar we've filled back up our local public schools to capacity and they are talking about reopening some empty schools.

Definitely did temporary damage, but we seemed to be rebounding.

There's definitely a line. As a parent, you should be your child's strongest advocate. But I've also had parents request some ridiculous stuff along these lines over the years.

Although more often than not, stuff like that was an escalation stemming from poor communication between home and school.

in Philadelphia, the charter elementary schools have almost completely replaced the private catholic schools that preceded them. there are still a still catholic schools hanging on, but what was once 3-4 schools in an area has now been combined into one.

there's also the issue that for middle and high school there are "target schools" that are fully public but you have to test into them. so they pull in all the good students or students with parents who care enough to prep them for the test, and then basically every public school after fifth grade is just struggling to keep the kids in line, forget about actually keeping them on course with the curriculum.

I'm pretty sure I know who half of Lee-Scott academy in Auburn, AL is named after. Considering it opened in 1965 immediately after federal integration.

And the Rober E Lee school in Montgomery was named by white guys as a heavy signal to I'm sure the predominantly black population. It's pretty common
