Shrews basically saying yea I'm building this program with high school kids- wouldn't be surprised to see him load up on 23's then

Should kick the tires on the Ben Davis Center who just de-committed from Valpo

I'm an old Midwestern white guy who's had the same haircut for 25 years and who goes back far enough to have cheered on guys wearing the old holey belly shirts made by Champion. This group of young minority coaches is very exciting to me. Hell, yes, it's a point of pride.

But even moreso, they're all seemingly very talented and may not even be close to their upside. Not to mention, they are all about as likeable as coaches can be. They are certainly am easy group to root for. I hope they succeed for their own sake, not just ND's.

"ACC player" tends to take on different meanings the last few years.

Hell add two competent midmajor level bigs to each of the last two teams and they wouldn't be elite, but the seasons probably look different.

So, yeah. Get the warm bodies.

I generally think you can have 5 2023s.

    Burton
    Shrewsbury
    Imes
    Booth
    Get Dunlap back

You got 9 or 10. Then get 3 GTs. You have a roster there.

    D3 on some offense tidbits

Been able to do some digging about how things are going in spring ball now that we are over a quarter of the way through spring practices. Here’s what I’ve been able to gather so far talking to different sources.

    QUARTERBACK

*** Sam Hartman is the real deal. Everyone I talk to says Notre Dame hasn’t had a guy that throws the ball like this in a long time. He’s picked up the offense quickly and has quickly connected with his teammates. Notre Dame’s staff knew he was good, but so far he’s been better than expected.

*** All my sources continue to rave about the spring performance of Tyler Buchner. I said the other day I felt that he was throwing with more power, and that was confirmed by my sources. His arm has taken a jump this offseason, and his feel for the game and accuracy have improved as well. The Irish staff is thrilled about his performance so far for a number of reasons. For one, he is showing the star potential they hoped he would, which excites them for the present and future. For two, Buchner playing the way he has so far is pushing Hartman and bringing the best out in him. Buchner playing so well is playing a role in why Hartman has been so good, both know they have to bring it every day and it’s making them both a lot better.

*** Kenny Minchey and Steve Angelihave also had plenty of good moments this spring, but both are well behind the other two quarterbacks. Minchey has a lot of arm talent but he’s still learning the offense and working on being more consistent.

    RUNNING BACK

*** There’s not a ton to report about the backs, which is normal at this point in spring practice. There were a couple of nuggets I’ve gathered, however. For one, Audric Estime has shed a little bit of mass, which is good. We talked this offseason about how he was a bit maxed out, and how that might be causing some endurance issues. He’s playing a lot more from a volume standpoint, and by leaning out he is moving a lot better.

*** Gi’Bran Payne is healthy and having a very good spring so far. Injuries have forced him to get a lot of work and he’s responded well. Payne is showing the burst he had prior to all the injuries, which is a good sign.

    WIDE RECEIVER

A quick note on what is to come with the WR. One of my primary sources for this particular intel is someone that a year ago was very down on the wideouts. So that makes what follows very, very encouraging.

*** The star of the wide receiving corps this spring has been Tobias Merriweather. I’m told he’s been dominant day after day, which is very important. Last season he showed flashes of being a big time player, but so far this spring he’s doing it on a far more consistent basis. His speed has taken a jump and he’s been almost impossible for any of the cornerbacks to defend, including Benjamin Morrison.

*** Chris Tyree is playing both wide receiver and running back, which I was happy to hear. The biggest thing I’ve learned from sources is that Tyree is completely bought in to his new role, which is very important. We’ve heard from many sources that Tyree has been very tough to guard on movement routes like crosses, slants, etc. What I was told today was even better, and that is that Tyree is also making plays over the top of the defense. I was surprised by that and want to see it for myself, but my source on this is a straight shooter, so that was great to hear. If Tyree can also use his speed vertically in the pass game it could be really, really dangerous for opponents.

*** Notre Dame’s staff is absolutely thrilled with the play of the freshman wide receivers. I was told at least one of the freshmen will have a chance to play a lot this year if he keeps doing what he’s been doing in spring ball, but I was surprised who that player was. The guy I keep hearing about is Braylon James. We’ve all seen the couple of deep ball video clips, but what I was told is he is doing that every single day. James is the most explosive receiver Notre Dame has, I’m told. He consistently runs by the Irish DBs, even when they know it’s coming. Even Morrison has fallen victim to James’ speed early on.

*** Rico Flores Jr. and Jaden Greathouse have also been very good this spring. Greathouse is playing in the slot, so right now he’s a bit buried behind guys like Jayden Thomas and Tyree. Flores is already one of the best route runners on the team and he has veteran confidence. Greathouse and Flores also have shown outstanding ball skills.

*** Deion Colzie has had some very good moments, but consistency is still a bit of an issue for him so far this spring. When he’s on Colzie has shown the ability to make plays down the field, and the key now is being able to do it consistently.

    OFFENSIVE LINE

*** I keep asking about Billy Schrauth, and every time I talk to someone all I get is basically some version of this …. “He’s the real deal” or “He’s as good as advertised.” I am looking forward to seeing him this weekend at the full practice.

*** Another lineman that has made a strong impression this spring is Sam Pendleton. Despite being a freshman, Pendleton has picked up the offense well and has shown a lot of power so far. He’s fitting in well and the staff has been impressed with his play. It’s early, but there are a few freshmen who my sources say have been better than they expected. Pendleton is one. Can he compete for a spot in the two deep? It’s too early for that, but the fact he’s actually pushing already is impressive.

They must be reading us. On the pod yesterday, the II guys walked back the four year basketball rebuild mantra, a bit. Especially if Shrews can bring in PSU's 23 class and Kebba Njie from the year before. Nobody was predicting a tournament run next year, but they did finally admit that it's possible these days to more quickly throw together a competitive roster.

This is going to be fun. As much as I'm ready for football, I'm kind of geeked to get to next basketball season, as well.

An undersized team with a shallow bench and who basically quit less than halfway through the season this year won 11 games.

Nobody's predicting a tourney run, but if they hit on the recruits and a few of the transfers that are considered real possibilities, they'll at least be more talented and probably as deep as the group that just won 11. They'll be young, but if you look outside our bubble, the ACC isn't exactly returning a bunch of teams who set the world on fire. ND isn't the only massive rebuild happening, either, and our HC has the benefit of being able to use the work he put in recruiting at PSU.

I don't think a two game improvement over 22-23 is that unrealistic. If things go well, I'd put the cap more toward 15-16 wins versus 12.

Basketball scheduling is weird and coach driven, Shrews can pack that thing with cupcakes early to build confidence if he wants which could mess with win totals.

I'll plant my flag in lower mid level ACC squad who at one point threatens to make the tournament but misses and has fun in the NIT

    Carey Booth update from Loy

Wolfeboro (N.H.) Brewster Academy four-star power forward Carey Booth had previously signed with Penn State, but that is no longer the case for the class of 2023 standout. The 6-10, 205-pounder has been released from his letter-of-intent and is now expected to head elsewhere.

Here is the latest on 247Sports’ No. 86 overall player in the country, who is also listed as the No. 73 overall talent nationally per the composite rankings.

I’m told Booth is set to visit Notre Dame. He’ll be on campus within the next two weeks. As of today, the date is still in the works, but the plan is to be on campus for a few days during the week of Apr. 8-13. He’ll visit South Bend, meet with new Notre Dame head coach Micah Shrewsberry, who was previously at Penn State, and give the Fighting Irish his full consideration.

With this news, it’s my belief that Notre Dame will eventually be the landing spot for Booth, who is expected to be a big riser in the next 247Sports rankings release. My crystal ball prediction is on Notre Dame.

Carey Booth is back on the board. Carey Booth, the son of former NBA player and current Denver Nuggets GM Calvin Booth, had a terrific season at Brewster Academy. In fact, I expect he’ll be a big riser in our final rankings update for the class of 2023,” said 247Sports Director of Scouting Adam Finkelstein recently. “And Eric Bossi knows this better than me because he’s watched him longer than me, but this is a young center who initially flirted with reclassifying because he’s so young for the class. He did not reclassify. He stayed in his original class of 2023, he committed to Penn State, and then of course Micah Shrewsberry leaves to take the job at Notre Dame. I think Notre Dame is certainly a strong candidate for Carey Booth now. But he’s getting interest across the board, because we’re talking about a late blooming, skilled big man with a high basketball IQ, who is showing a very rapid rate of improvement in the last six months in particular. Again, I think Carey Booth is going to be a riser in the 2023 rankings and certainly one of the best prospects is back on the board in 2023.”

247Sports Scouting Report: Booth is a long-term stock. He’s not ready to dominate a game and has several areas that need to be addressed before he’s college-ready, but long-term, there are a lot of markers for future success. He is the son of longtime NBA player and current Denver Nuggets GM Calvin Booth. The crux of the upside is based on the combination of size and skill. At 6-foot-9, he can already stretch the floor and projects as someone who should continue to become more consistent as a floor-spacer. More subtle, but just as intriguing long-term, is the basketball IQ. Booth not only grew up around the game, but he’s been very well-coached, and it shows. He moves without the ball very well for a frontcourt player – slipping out of screens, back-cutting, and being able to function in various schemes and actions. He also shows some athletic flashes of quick bounce in space. He needs to build-up his body and get a lot stronger in order to impact the game in the paint. He isn’t yet able to play through contact consistently and needs to be a better rebounder on both ends of the floor. He has a tendency to hang around the arc too much and can go through periods where he just doesn’t impact the game as much as he should. There are also some edges to smooth out. He doesn’t have an ultra-fluid gate when running the floor and has a small hitch in his shooting release with a very wide-base in his lower body. Overall, Booth is a work-in-progress as he continues to get stronger and more assertive, but one that I am buying long-term because of his combination of size, skill, and IQ.
