Easily the best marvel movie since endgame (havent seen quantumania) james gunn at dc is a legit threat to marvel for 1st time since nolan left
just had some coffee, get ready for an essay Spoiler - - every recent marvel director I can think of (Coogler, Rainmi, Russo bros, etc) have had hits and misses. Taika Waititi in particular followed up Ragnarok with one of the shittiest movies ever - I liked parts of the recent spiderman, black panther, dr strange, even shang chi movies, but they all had flaws. it was impossible for coogler in particular to make that plot work. - Gunn is all hits, no misses. I dont think hes put out a movie I didnt enjoy. Good & creative writing. Fast and streamlined plot. Solid music. Juust the right amount of humor, none of it corny.. I was genuinely laughing throughout - Movie starts, boom, immediate stakes. Rocket is dying? lets go save him. The urgency is there and and its refreshing vs the long winding forced plots of other movies. again this stuff is all simple in theory but so many marvel movies lately feel awkward and forced. I get that Feige is trying to move Phase X Series character arc A-1 along, but I dont care - every character got room to breathe. Nebula (love her), Dax, Mantis, Starlord, Gamora. this was a mster class in taking a big cast of characters and tying up their stories with a bow at the end - ive really never thought much of chris pratt acting skills (outside of comedy) but him at the end losing it over rockets corpse was unreal. also lovd him getting one over on the receptionist chick and immediately disabling all the security guards - fight scene choreography was outstanding. The last battle opening scene where they all walked into the loading bay as a group and started whoopin ass was A+. High evolutionary guy getting jumped by the group at the end was sick - finally a movie without completely shitty CGI. lets have more of that
Unrelated to GOTG: I think the studio will move towards someone established and dependable to replace Majors. Jamie Foxx crossed my mind today. It also occurred to me that, regardless of Majors’ acting ability(and fuck everything else about him), I think the Kang character is only a couple years away from being upstaged by Doom if they cast well. In that same vain, I think one of Marvel’s primary issues currently is trying to rely on their b-squad in terms of popularity at this current stage. That worked when the MCU was new or when they were integrated with established hero. In short, they desperately need to get to F4 and mutants stage to resuscitate some excitement. Gunn is planning to use a lot of lesser known heroes in revamping the DCEU, which will work because he’s fantastic creatively and people are dying to see that universe do well consistently.
I've long thought that Kang was an intentional stepping stone to Doom. Kang isn't the big bad of the saga; he's the guy you think is the big bad to make Doom that much more impressive when he quickly 86s him. Basically this but with Kang
I don’t think there is enough run between F4 and Secret Wars to introduce Doom and supe him up to God Emperor status. I always thought after Kang you give Doom his run then after Doom you give Magneto the run he deserves. I saw rumors that Loki 2 might get delayed again because they want to make some changes which is probably hard to do without writers.
Nothing earth shattering in here that I saw but one of the theories in this thread was confirmed Spoiler Groot says “I am Groot” at the end but the audience can finally hear the translation.
Spoiler Loved that touch, especially with Gamora not being able to understand him for most of the movie also.
Just finished. So much dust in that theater. Absolutely loved it, almost as much if not more than the first. James Gunn is the undisputed king of the MCU. Love that man so much.
Just got back from seeing. Easily my top movie post End Game, cried multiple times. My dad passed away around the time of Guardians of the Galaxy 2 back in 2017 so Yondu's death scene fucked me up hard and the line of Spoiler "You weren't born to be a Destroyer, you were born to be a dad" got me good but was almost like closure in coming full circles.
Spoiler I was expecting a lot of sad tears (thinking Drax and Rocket were goners) but ended up with so many giant smile on my face and watery eyes moments like that one.
I really enjoyed it probably goes right after Wakanda Forever and No Way Home in my post Endgame rankings
perfection feels like the balance of comedy, stakes, emotion and heroism that love and thunder was desperately trying to accomplish (didn’t) easily a tier 1 marvel movie Spoiler all the way down to the kevin bacon tell all in the post credits
Saw it. Enjoyed it. Maybe not as much as others in here, but that's fine. I could see myself appreciating it more going forward. I think I was just so unsure what to expect because of it being promoted so much as the last one.
I saw his name in the credits but had no idea who he was in the movie. There were actually a few random names that had me all
Im a lot lower on 2 than most everyone else but I still love it. I thought Taika was #1 but LnT didn’t click and Gunn nailed this one so he gets the title. One thing I heard on some nerd cast, Gunn was given free license for his movies and characters. Feige never told him to tie this storyline in or that character or anything. The only time there was a disagreement, Gunn was opposed to Quill punching Thanos and ruining the plan in IW but Fiege told him they had no choice.
Enjoyed it. Still doesn’t stack up to the first one, but that’s almost asking the impossible. Spoiler This film did a great job putting a bow on GOTG, and it did feel like “Marvel film” more than the last few films have. That said, it’s yet another MCU film that I left the theater asking myself “what exactly are we doing here?”. Also, am I crazy for thinking The Marvels actually looks ok?
She'll definitely be the reason to see it. Hopefully she can offset Brie Larson's wooden personality.
Brie has comedic chops (see Scott Pilgrim), but like Hemsworth, they definitely need to write her character better. However, I’ll watch a 5 hour silent movie of just Brie wearing a Nine Inch Nails shirt.
I definitely thought the first "fuck" in the MCU was going to be a callback to Rocket saying "welcome to the frickin Guardians of the Galaxy, only he didn't use frickin". But I liked that they used it in the most relatable way possible.
Doom at his Base level isn’t remotely capable of doing this to thanos, he’d get handled quickly for even trying this this was like a god level version of doom
Had Marvel fatigue. Haven't seen Eternals, Ant-Man 3 or Black Panther 2. Haven't seen some shows either. Do I need to see any of these before GoG 3?
I will, already have it DL'd. Just got overwhelmed trying to keep up with all of it. My kid tapped out too for a bit.
I was hoping he’d still be Wonderman when that series comes out but I guess they’re going in a different direction.
Spoiler The bad dog bit between Sean Gunn and Cosmo was one of my favorite parts also where can I get a stuffed animal version of Blurp. It is so dang adorable.
I don’t think I have ever cried in a movie theater until today. Sure, I have teared up now and then, but of all movies…Guardians of the Galaxy made me full on cry. First time was when Rocket flatlined. Quill’s “NOOOOOOO!!!!” got the tears welling up. Then when Rocket came back and Groot leaned down to hug him the damn broke and I just started sobbing. Second thing was at the end when Quill met his grandfather. The grandfather’s reaction brought me to tears again. I’m in awe that I got so invested in these characters, who prior to the first Guardians movie, I had never even heard of. I’m really excited to see what Gunn can do with DC. My more beloved characters are there.
Some nerd casts floated the idea but if these movies keep failing to hit the billion mark how long until Gunn-Feige decide to announce a cross over?
No idea if it will ever happen but if done right it would rake in the money. I think DC would need to be up a rolling properly first though.
Even if they don’t make one for a decade plus, announcing that is a way to hype up both franchises leading up to it.
