tbh I wouldn't have thought Ohtani did either until this past offseason. He'd "only" made $40m in MLB, I guess his off-field income is more than I would have expected.
Wow, they're really going far to cover things up for Ohtani. This may even be worse than MLB making the Astros take the fall for the whole league for sign stealing ;)
He agreed to defer all but $2 million/year of his salary. The man is quite obviously not stretched thin.
Sure, but $16m is a LOT of money to not be missed. Like someone with $100m would still miss $16m. idk where the line is that it's easy to not miss it but it's a high number.
it’s an oddly large amount of money to just have sitting in a bank account, I’d agree. But would anyone question it if he thought he had that $16 million sunk into some land deals that Ippei got him into?
I’d bet the percentage of celebrities with nine digit net worths who have any idea of how those nine digits are accounted for is exceedingly low.
I understand people getting scammed out of money, it's the interpreter having so much access that throws me. I guess if he was just lying to everyone involved it makes sense, but shouldn't there be some culpability with the people in charge of his finances that they were duped so easily?
More surprised his financial adviser wasn't aware of where that money went. I get Ohtani not being aware but NOBODY being aware seems like a fuck up somewhere.
DOJ: Interpreter charged with bank fraud, admits to stealing from Ohtani. Ohtani fully cooperated and gave access to his digital devices. named as a victim in the complaint. Me: Well, that's pretty definitive. You: What a homer! Ignoring the clear federal governmental cover-up!?!?!
typically people with crippling addictions try to avoid situations which might cause them to sink further into their addictions hth
people with crippling addictions don't actually avoid those situations. that's why they have crippling addictions. What they hell are you talking about?
this guy is about to go to federal prison to cover up ohtani’s illegal activities he’s even more ride or die than cowlings
It seems like he was really more of a body man than just an interpreter. How did this story get blown open - wasn’t it unnamed Ohtani representatives? I’m guessing it was the financial advisor who realized there was a sizable hole.
look inward my guy. I can't continue talking to someone as dumb as you. your post was absolutely moronic. godspeed.
“Technically I did steal, it’s all over for me” will find a way into my real life conversations with people
Dude lied about his education and work experience. It's pretty clear he's a con artist and Ohtani has been screwed over.
I read that he could face up to 30 years in prison or roughly a million dollar fine. And most of these cases end in fines and probation. So Ohtani covers his fine, his interpreter gets probation, and problem solved. Works out for everyone.
So the master plan of the bookie was to get Ohtani to pay off the debt without notifying any authorities Translator instead steals it which exposed him and the bookie to any number of felonies fucking brilliant all around
At what point does the agent find someone else who can speak Japanese and ask/talk to Shohei about this account rather than go straight through the interpreter?
I'm sure the bank was just happy to have his money, but it's hilarious that Ohtani would walk into some bank branch in Arizona to open up an account to direct deposit his MLB checks and nobody thought it was strange. if this is all true, there were so many instances of people just being dumb as hell to let it happen.
They don’t have any healthy bullpen arms left, they had 2 guys throw 50+ pitches out of the pen yesterday, will probably see multiple position players pitch today
