Player that was constantly suspended and in the doghouse all year and wasn't even on the plane with the team to the tournament because he was in the doghouse to the very end is now in the transfer portal. I'm am so shocked and surprised.
why? His defensive stats at Indiana and USA were very good. My apprehension is I don’t know if he can recreate that against elite competition.
Just decommitted and recommitted to us (I know this is a random drop in, searched Cam Smith and this was the only thread that ever discussed him)
Apparently our former coach wasn’t impressed with the swarm d, and questioned whether Wommack had what it takes to be an SEC caliber coordinator. This coming from people here and elsewhere that are close to the program.
Well in fairness that same former coach hired Kevin Steele to be our DC last year and we all know how that turned out
I admire your restraint to not mention Golding…or pretty much any other defensive coaching hire from 2018-2023.
I love Nick. He's the absolute best to ever do it, but if he said that (and who knows if he did), I'd be fairly quiet with it when my last 3 defense coordinator hires at Alabama were Tosh Lupoi, Pete Golding, and a Kevin Steele that apparently was barely even coaching. He without a doubt cost himself (and us) multiple championships by allowing the defense to slip dramatically under those guys.
And I understand that he struggled making hires at some positions in the latter years due to age/retirement rumors, and the fact that he's just hard to work for. But we had many chances to kick Pete out the door, and we refused to do so and actively tried to keep him, while wasting generational offensive talent. I find it very hard to believe that Kane will be any worse than Pete. Steele/Bala wasn't some amazing combination, but our ILB play was light years better just based on the simple fact that Pete was no longer in the building.
We were in the Top 10ish lists for him a year or so ago but pretty quickly we were pushed out and all his news was centered about Texas/Kansas/Indiana. He was one of the first kids in this class we targeted, though.
I’ve felt for many years now that Saban’s scheme was far too complex for todays game. With the portal and NIL it was going to be a struggle to keep top defensive talent on the sidelines because they needed time to learn the defense and not make mistakes. We gave up so many busts bc guys were constantly confused and some guys played tentative bc they were processing instead of reacting. In todays game I’m excited about a defense that allows guys to read and react and gives young guys that have supreme talent an opportunity to play. Also if you grab a guy from the portal he can make an immediate impact
Don't get me wrong, I'm not dumb enough to think that Bama hoops should ever turn their noses up at a 5 star recruit, but with Derrion Reid coming in, it almost feels like McNeeley is more of a luxury than an absolute need at the 3 spot.
How dare you LW - he will be a gritty slap the floor type defensive player. Smart, lunchpail guy. Or something.
After Keon's defensive masterclass last night............Ellis and Herb on the same team defensively in 2021. Of course, that was somewhat offset by Shack and JQ.
I kind of find it hard to believe that Saban would shit talk Wommack even privately unless it was said a few years ago.
I think there’s a lot of truth to this. But still if your scheme sucks and you can’t coach defense worth a shit, it’s problematic. Wommack is just a giant question mark. This rumor that Saban questioned that Wommack had what it takes means absolutely nothing to me.
Why am I hearing reports that the offense ran the ball down the defense’s throat at a day? Typically under Saban the defense was ahead of the offense and I don’t recall the defense getting pounded. Was it just the way they had it set up? Is there even anything that can be deduced from that game or it’s all irrelevant?
Wasn't there a post like 2 days ago about Saban and Wommack having a few meetings to discuss defensive concepts already?
The all timer is that Saban wanted LSU to hire Houston Nutt after he left. It honestly could be that if Saban thinks he sucks that's a good thing.
