GQ+A: We Quizzed Silicon Valley Star Kumail Nanjiani on His Nerd Knowledge
    BY FREDDIE CAMPION
    [IMG]
    Photo: Frank Masi/HBO

Out of all the cast of Silicon Valley, no one is more deserving of their real-life nerd card than Kumail Nanjiani. Nanjiani, a brilliant stand-up comedian in his own right and co-host of the excellent TV stand-up show The Meltdown, which will hopefully returning to Comedy Central this summer, says he has seen the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy at least 10 times, and thanks to the ingeniously named X-Files Files (his podcast all about The X-Files) he can list the credits of almost every episode of The X-Files off the top of his head and without looking at IMDB once. Really. We actually made him do it.

[WARNING: Contains Game of Thrones season four spoilers.]

Is it a more adventurous season of Silicon Valley this season?
There is a lot bigger stuff that happens. If you saw the first season you know
that our company becomes more high-profile, so we're getting a new kind of attention. I don't know it the adventure is bigger, but it's certainly very different.

That was my way to try and sneak some Silicon Valley spoilers out of you.
Just so you know, I've been warned pretty heavily not to say anything. And I agree
with you, this isn't Game of Thrones—I don't think people are like, "Oh, I wonder what is going to happen to Joffrey"—but I've gotten many, many warnings.

So what you're saying is that your character dies after he gets poisoned by a dwarf at a wedding?
Yeah, my face goes purple. And in the beginning people are happy I am gone, but then they sort of start missing me.

What Game of Thrones character would you be if you could chose one?
Prince Oberyn. I really liked that guy, because he could fight, and have sex with
everybody, and he's ethnically vague and has a really funny accent and his clothes were awesome. I was really bummed out when it became clear he wasn't going to be on the show any more.

    Who would you actually be?
Oh, I would be a guy who is never really focused on. I would be one of the guys
in the background with the crows cleaning a toilet or something. I'm a big Lord of the Rings fan, and I just re-watched those movies again. There is a part in one of the big battles where all the good guys are holding before they attack the Orcs and then an old guy fires an arrow by mistake. I feel like I would be that guy. All I say is, "sorry guys, I fucked up." Then you never see me again.

How many times have you seen The Lord of The Rings movies?
I've seen the original Lord of the Rings series in its entirety at least 10 times, which is quite a feat, when you think about the fact it's about 12 hours of film each time.

Does it still surprise you after the 10th viewing?
I cry at the exact same parts every time. That part with Legolas and Gimli where
Gimli is like, "I never thought I'd die fighting side-by-side with an elf." And Legolas goes, "How about fighting side-by-side with a friend?" And Gimli says, "I could do that." That part gets me every fucking time.

I can hear you choking up over the phone.
No, I'm a big strong man now. The cool thing is I don't need to see everything leading up to that to feel connected to it. I've seen them so many times that it's already ingrained in me, and I have the same emotional reaction as if I'd watched the three preceding hours.

My problem with the Lord of the Rings is this: if Gandalf can summon giant eagles at any moment, why doesn't he just summon them at the beginning of the film, and him and Frodo just fly to Mordor?
Well, part of the reason why they send Hobbits in the first place is that they
need to use stealth. If Sauron's eye saw giant eagles flying in the sky, he would send the Nazgûl to take them out pretty quickly. Also, in the books, the eagles talk and stuff, and part of the story involves trying to get them on board. I think Peter Jackson just realized that talking eagles are really goofy looking.

As opposed to dwarves, and four-foot men with giant hairy feet?
Yeah, it's all goofy, but you've got to draw the line somewhere. I think you draw it before the talking giant eagles.

You're also a big X-Files fan, what's the nerdiest fact you can recite on the spot right now?
People are always surprised I know the names of episodes. I can't name any of the episodes of Game of Thrones, but with The X -Files I could probably tell you who wrote it, what season it was, and the name of it….up to maybe season 6.

I'm going to test you on this. I'll give you a random episode name and you have to tell me the season, and who wrote it.
    Okay.

    The episode name is "Irresistible."
Okay, "Irresistible" is season two. This is the first one that didn't have a realX-File, it's just a serial killer guy. And it's a scary one, so I'm going to guess it was directed by David Nutter. Is that right?
    That is correct.
Alright, and, oh yes, it was written by Chris Carter. It is, isn't it?

You're not on Wikipedia now are you? Be honest.
No, but I have probably seen that episode in the last three months. That one is
a pretty good episode. And it's a weird one because they didn't have a real X-File. It was just about a serial killer. And, there is a big long speech that Mulder gives at the end about the nature of evil and how it's not always a monster, sometimes it's just a guy who lives next to you.

But you can't recite the entire monologue verbatim?
    No.
That's what a real X-Files fan would be able to do, if we're honest.
Aw man, I feel so inadequate.

If you could write yourself into one of the new episodes, who would you be?
I would have to be the guy who has been dating Scully, and we're in love and I
help her solve…I don't know...the crime? I come in and save the day at the end and then Scully and I go back to the happy home we share.

You solve the crime in ten minutes and then the next three-quarters
of an hour are just you and her making out?

Not just making out, we're, like, getting breakfast together, going shopping, going to Bed Bath & Beyond, Just sort of living the life we have and, I'll admit it, sex is a part of it. But there're a lot of other aspects, too. Some of it is just us watching the
    Lord of the Rings.

great episode. i was ready for a letdown after a meh masters and meh GOT.

finally got the satisfaction I was looking for. any way this season is longer than 8 episodes? that's not enough.

Peter Gregory's replacement is pretty not bad. Pretty damn funny that they replaced him with a female version of the same guy. One of the better ways I've seen a show deal with a big character's death.

How exactly does Hooli plan on suing PP? I find it hard to believe that they can't prove that not only did he not steal shit from Hooli but that Hooli reverse engineered PP originally. doesn't seem like a thing at all

that's cool that it wasn't their intention at all... but that woman talks, acts, and has all the same mannerisms as Peter Gregory did. The only new direction they went with her is that she's a female. It's the same character. And I think it's a good thing because she adds to the awkwardness of the show.

While she had some of the same mannerisms, she didnt seem as out there in her thinking.I think back to the episode where Gregory was enamored with Burger King and had to have it, which then led to him purchasing stock in some sesame seed producer. Laurie seemed more straight forward in how she talked to Monica and Richard compared to Peter.
