It is kind of surprising, yet completely understandable how little stock is actually kept on hand. I was just messing around with col. conk soaps on shavetools.com and they only have 10 in stock of each scent.
Totally agree. Aside from buying direct from the source it seems like this is often the case. Especially those Feather clippers from West Coast. They never have those things when I need to reach the free shipping mark.
Today I got all 4 of the RazoRock 'La Famiglia' Shaving Soaps delivered. For my first shave I used the Green Tobacco and I was not disappointed. I would say the scent has a similar smell to the Napoleon's Violet. With these four new soaps I figure I am all set with shaving soap for the next year.
I think I have as sensitive a face as one can have, so I'm going to try this and then probably sue the shit out of everyone in this thread when I destroy the one good thing God gave me in my life. I wish I could buy all of this shit at Target damnit :(
somebody try it and post a review. So far I have tried the T&F aftershave balms and the Razorock aftershave wax and while I think the T&F works the best nothing has necessarily worked great for me yet.
1 oz for $10 plus shipping?...isnt that a lot? Art of Shaving is about $11/oz (3.4 oz bottle) and they are wayyyy overpriced.
I like the T&H stuff, but I prefer the NY Shaving Co. balm. Their Tonsorial scent is my favorite of everything I have and have tried. I also like the Thayers Lemon Witch Hazel, which has been a great warm weather splash.
Really want to try the Vostok tomorrow, but I'm going with the comfort of a solid shave of DR Harris. I'll save the Vostok for Tuesday next week, as it's balls hot lately.
Has anyone ordered the QCS aftershave balm? Am I going to have to be the first to pull the trigger and order some? TYdeFan05 - am I mistaken, or does one of either QCS Esquire or Queen Charlotte smell like the DRH Arlington? Seems like their descriptions lend themselves towards that scent ....
I'm going to order some now, just waiting to find out what type of soap to order as well. I'm falling prey to the free shipping offer again when spending $50+. Yes, I'm a sucker. Did you get your DRH Arlington yet? Thoughts on the scent?
Yep tried it and meant to do a review. Scent is great but I still haven't found a soap that performs better than Proraso. The Proraso Aloe and Green Tea soap is my #1 by a long shot.
Interesting. Proraso is one of the few I haven't tried yet. I'm sold on the DRH stuff - really like the performance, and the Arlington scent is great, and I LOVE the Lavender scent.
Fwiw I love the queen Charlotte scent. I don't know how it compares to those others but it's a good manly scent. I compare it to how you'd imagine a golf country clubs mens locker room should smell like.
Thinking about it just because it's their namesake scent. Seems like it should be pretty solid if it shares a name with the company.
Now you know why I have a dozen of the lavender. If you like that, the only soap on the planet that can best it, for me, is MdC.
I'll try MdC at some point, but the DRH is my favorite so far (both Arlington and Lavender). I'm going to stop accumulating soon and just stick with a few favorites that I can live with for a long time. Of course, as I say this I'm ordering some NY Shaving Co. Tonsorial Bond soap and more balm. One of my overall favorite scents.
I started off with creams and still like them, but I find I prefer soaps now that I've tried them. It's just easier to face lather a soap than use a mug for a cream. Anyone found the same?
Welp, shot my wad in an AOS today. Fucking stacked young saleswoman greeted me and I knew it was over :( I just want to say goodbye to everyone in this thread as ill probably be dying fairly shortly here either tonight or in the am.
Tried the Vostok soap today. Definitely a cooling sensation that was nice on a 95 degree day. I think I prefer the QCS creams to their soaps, but I need to try again before making a determination. Glad I waited to use a QCS soap before ordering more.
Use more water. Their soaps are easily up there with Harris, you just have to use more water. The creams are easy to lather, but the soaps perform just as well but last forever. Easily three times longer for me.
I ended up needing more soap than water. Just have to get used to the soap instead of cream. It's just a learning process.
just had the best shave of my life. new feather blade, drop of proraso, drop of speik. 3 passes. AOS lavender aftershave /lookatme
I bought mine after starting out on the Edwin Jagger 89 so that is my lone point of reference. I love mine and would buy again without a doubt. Based on my two the Weber is the daily and the EJ is in the extra bathroom.
Tyde, have you used the DRH Almond soap? Is it fairly similar to the Arlington and Lavender in terms of performance? And how is the scent, similar to the T&H Almond? I'm assuming so on all fronts, but not positive. Also, I was checking the reviews in the early posts, and you mention the Penhaligon's creams being "top tier" but I saw no mention of the soaps. Have you tried those and how are they?
Bought one and love it. Pair it with a Feather blade my beard has no chance. Would definitely buy again.
got mine in the mail yesterday. Will try my first ever shave with a DE razor tomorrow Not sure which of my sampler blades to try for my first time. Thinking about the Gillette 7 o'clocks. From this thread I think I know not to go with the feathers the first time
My rankings of Harris soaps based on performance: Equal among the 4 tallow based scents (the soap is made the same, the scent is the only minor tweak added at the end). The naturals line soap isn't good enough for washing asses though. I hope the new Windsor line is tallow based. Scent: Lavender and Arlington you know. Marlborough smells like a wet ashtray in an old Chevy. Some people love it, I can't handle it. Almond is NOT the sweet almond scent that Italian soft soaps are known for. It almost has a chalky or earthy almond scent. Not that close to T&H either. It's a scent that almost reminds me more of the QCS earthy soaps. I don't hate it and have several pucks. However, for me it's definitely a step down on the scent of Lavender and Arlington. Penhaligon's reformulated to a non-tallow variety several years ago. There's a reason the vintage tallow version sells for over $100 at times. A) it used to be (almost) that good B) the current version is garbage. The scents didn't change, but the new formula's performance is nothing to waste my money on.
Nope I've been using brushes and soaps for almost 6 months now but never broke down and bought a razor. I've still been using my Shick Quattro Titanium and getting incredible shaves just due to brush applied soap/cream as opposed to what I was using before but now I'm "all in".
I am keeping my eye on the Windsor as well and agree that it had better be tallow. The Dr. Harris tallow soaps are really hard to beat and I have heard positive reviews of the new Windsor scent. Could be a great addition to their line. Also agree with you on the naturals...a real travesty.
I have no intention of reading the first 45 pages of this thread; I'm just going to solicit advice. If I shave more frequently than about every third day, I get terrible razor burn on my neck. I've never used anything other than cartridge razors. Currently using Gillette Pro-Glide. It works like a champ if I've got a couple days worth of growth, but like I said, if I try to shave on consecutive days, my neck gets torn up. Help a brother out.
