Was reading through the fan theories page on Reddit, linked from the thread about it on TMB. Scroll about 3/4th of the way down and someone raises the theory that Jon Snow is actually the son of Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark. http://www.reddit.com/r/AskReddit/comments/ubaqq/what_fan_theories_have_blown_your_mind_with_their/ Supporting evidence being: -Jon and Arya are said to look alike, and Arya is said to look like Lyanna -It could be the reason why Ned never told ANYONE about Jon's mother, or the circumstances of his conception. -He couldn't tell Robert because, naturally, Robert would want to kill Jon. -It's said that Lyanna was found on a "bed of blood". Is it possible she died giving birth to Jon? -Lyanna's final words were "promise me Ned". Could Jon be what she was talking about? -This could also further explain the presence of the Kingsguard at the Tower of Joy -Is it also possible that Rhaegar didn't "capture" Lyanna, but that they were betrothed? -This makes sending Jon to the Wall make even more sense, as no one in Westeros would be able to handle a bastard son of a Stark/Targaryen. I'm an admitted showfag turning in to a bookfag (1/4 of the way through A Clash of Kings) so it's entirely possible I could have just stumbled across this information before it's laid out in the books. I haven't read the "Origins of Jon Snow" thread, for obvious reasons. I know nothing.
You should really avoid theories until you have finished the books. You don't want to spoil yourself.
Rhaegar was already married with 2 kids so it is impossible for him to be betrothed to Lyanna but his wife was sickly and unable to have anymore kids. But Rhaegar was real big into prophecies and the dragon must have 3 heads so it is possible Elia gave him the ok the fuck Lyanna.
someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm almost positive Elia was dead before Lyanna was found in the Tower of Joy. not sure it was 9 months before so the baby may still have been conceived before they were married, but they could have been married by the time it was born. betrothed was a poor choice of word either way though.
well look at the timeline. the Lannisters sacked King's Landing and killed Elia and her children. then Ned gets pissed when he sees the dead babies, fights with Robert and winds up leaving to lift the seige on Storm's End. then he goes to the Tower of Joy and finds Lyanna. she had to have been dead before.
Yea Elia was dead by the time they found Lyanna but Rhaegar died before Elia did. Rhaegar was defeated and then Ned marched on KL. Elia was killed during Tywins sack of the city
Robert and Ned never fought over the dead Targ babies. That was all Tywins doing with The Mountain killing Elia. Robert wasnt even there for the sack of KL.
they fought when the dead babies were presented to Robert and Ned wanted Lorch and Gregor (and the Lannisters) punished or denounced for it and Robert said it was just something that happens in war.
just looking up dates on the wiki, Lyanna was only 15 when she died. I thought she was much older. Rhaegar was 24.
