Yeah I felt the same way about Balon and the whole situation. Theon then felt he need to prove to him he belonged and then went about making bonehead decisions the rest of the way in ACOK
no but someone put up a quote in the season thread that sort of implied it. it was only one line, so definitely overlooked
They didn't directly say that he did... Spoiler however, in ADWD, during a Melisandre chapter it says that her bed has scarcely been used since Stannis left. Or something like that
Alright, what are my directions again? Just basically make a journal entry for every couple of chapters?
No joke. Book 3 is the consensus best book of the series and there are a lot of important plot points/twists to the book. It's mostly because we're nerds and want to recreate the experience of reading the book for the first time.
When he says "laugh at you" it's in a good way like hazing a brother into the Storm of Swords fraternity
Do it, please. WBN probably had himself a few chuckles reacting to my pms last summer while I was reading the books for the first time.
I did, just as I laugh at everyone who reads the book for the first time. Just like I laugh at my younger self who read the book for the first time. I knew nothing.
Where is it indicating that Renly and Loras were lovers? I kept on waiting for some subtle clue but I never really saw it. The closest thing I gathered was that Renly was always given somewhat feminine qualities (Pretty face, rainbow guard, etc.) and when Catelyn was visiting Renly's camp, it mentioned that Loras and Renly were talking while Queen Margery wasn't really engaged in the conversation. I just figured it was going to be a little more blatant since it was thrown right in your face in the series.
I really don't know how people can say it's only been slightly hinted at. people make comments over and over about it.
Yeah I didn't get the impression that Loras and Renly were playing tummy sticks with each other. I can understand why people were mad at how it was portrayed in the show.
i can't remember any specifics from the first two books, but i remember thinking it was completely obvious when i read them. in fact i was surprised at how shocked people were
These comments don't really start until the 3rd book, and then that is all people ever say about them.
anyone who has doubts read this. be sure to set your appropriate scope at the top so you're not spoiled on anything. http://towerofthehand.com/essays/chrisholden/loras_and_renly_gay.html
When I was reading, I thought of Renly and Loras as "they're so gay" because of stuff like the "knight of flowers" and the rainbow guard, but not necessarily in terms of them being homosexual. I didn't really see that until after Renly was dead and people started making comments like "Renly's little rose" and the Jaime comment.
They also mention them "praying" together a few times. I read all the books after I knew they were gay and there were plenty of hints throughout the books.
Just finished ACOK last night. For me, Catelyn chapters were 100x worse than Sansa chapters. Sansa at least gave you a POV into the goings on at King's Landing. Seems like Catelyn spent the whole season at Riverrun crying about her dying father. I kept wanting the old man to cough AIDS in her face, die, and make her die too. I definitely don't remember as much Robb as y'all do. Pretty much just news after the fact from battles, but even then it wasn't that often. I'm 145 pages in to ASOS and loving it (just finished Davos' second POV chapter this morning). After playing catch-up for books 1 and 2, it's so nice to be ahead of the show and not know what's about to happen. It will definitely make watching the show a lot different from now on. I hope I can enjoy the show for what it is and not get mad at every change they make.
Loras dressed up in Renly's armor during the battle. I'm not sure I would understand either if I didn't watch the show.
I'm reading through the books because of the show and I just read how Ned's brother and father died. Holy shit why didn't they say this in the show? Also why didn't Varys tell Tyrion how he was cut. That was awesome too.
There are several of theses. This, most of robert's rebellion, Tower of Joy, numerous prophecies, tourney at Harrenhall, Rhaegar Targaryen etc that I won't go into detail on since you are reading the books but it's a shame some of these aren't told in detail. It's not possible to a degree and I believe some of these will be told on the show in time. Dream come true would be a Robert's rebellion miniseries at some point
They mention it during season 1 when they get Lysa's message in Winterfell and Jaime talks about it with Ned in the throne room when he arrives at King's Landing. It would be hard to understand what they're talking about if you didn't read the first book though.
