I'd say AFFC and ADWD seem to have fewer big twists and more subtle twists. AFFC wasn't my favorite ever, but was still a good book. ADWD is awesome.
Red Wedding wasn't that upsetting to me for multiple reasons. I knew some of my favorite characters were going to die. Thanks to perusing this board and seeing all the GOT memes, I knew that GRRM was well known for killing off lovable characters. So I basically knew that someone really awesome was going to die. I went into the book expecting anybody, from Jon Snow, to Dany, to Tyrion getting murdered. Robb seemed unlikely, but I was prepared to be pissed off. I read the first book after I saw the show, so seeing Ned die was shocking, but it was a TV show so whatever. After Stannis burned the leeches and Mellisandre prophesied the deaths of Balon, Robb and Joff, I figured it was a matter of time before all three of them got got. Did I think it was going to come from the Freys? No. Absolutely not. But I assumed the Stark's inevitable demise way before the Red Wedding, and had accepted it by the time they actually killed them. So yeah, I never got officially spoiled, but it was hinted at enough on this board that some good characters were going to get killed and at this point I knew that Stanniss' black magic was no joke.
I'm still holding out hope that the Starks will somehow make a comeback. Jojen says the wolves will come again. I hope he's right.
Probably just a matter of your favorite perspectives then. I love Tyrion, Jon, Bran, and Arya. Dany and Jaime aren't bad. Cersei and Sansa are cunts. So you can see why AFFC didn't stand a chance against ADWD.
Remember in which thread you're posting. Don't post things that confirm people are still alive or are now dead in threads that are not for people who have finished all the books. You've kinda done this twice today, with the above post and a post in LLoyd Christmas's book 5 thread.
Oh I hope they will, too. I"m just now starting Feast so don't spoil it for me, but the majority of the children are still alive. Bran is obviously incredibly intelligent and is by far the most skilled Warg. Arya is really strong willed, and I can just imagine her being a more sleek version of Brienne when she is older. Sansa obviously sucks and it looks like she's about to start getting raped by Littlefinger in the Vale, but she is at least still alive. Not to mention Jon Snow is now the Lord Commander of the Night's Watch. Martin has painted off the Starks as being the most honorable and lovable family throughout the series. Obviously one of his major themes is showing that being honorable and good is not always in one's best interests. But I am holding out hope that he will eventually stake a comeback for the Starks and make all things right in Westeros.
7 chapters or so into AFFC so don't spoil it for me, but I hope we hear something from Rickon in the future.
No worries, if you spoiled something I didn't notice it. Also, I don't believe shit anyone says anyway.
Yeah, all my posts in your thread are recollections of what I was thinking at the same point in the book. I usually double and triple check anything I say with towerofthehand or westeros.org before posting to make sure I'm not spoiling anything.
I think he said he takes notes so we get his thoughts as it's happening. Definitely the best "diary" thread
he said after the soccer shootout he's reading all night. we'll see how he feels about that after this next chapter.
I'm through a third of the book and it's such a faster read than the first two. Maybe it's because I knew what was going to happen because of the show but right now, the third book is easily my favorite.
I have weird feels. I thoroughly enjoyed your thread and look forward to your quest to full bookfagdom. But then I think outside this board you're just another buckeye...the looks, the taunts, they wouldn't understand .
I think I just read it. I'll spoil it since I haven't read the thread and am not sure of the rules. Spoiler Fucking Walder Frey. I had a feeling it was a trap. But damn they killed Rob and Catelyn. I'm honestly at a loss of words.
Everyone here has finished the book, you can discuss here but be careful because the entire scope of the book is covered itt and you may spoiler yourself if you look around. re: the red wedding, I know that feel bro.
The most haunting sentence ever: His axe took her in the back of the head. I now understand why yall told me to make a thread about my venture through this book.
Ohh this is bull shit. Robb gets cut to pieces but Joffrey chokes to death. Such a harmless way to go out when I was hoping for death by water boarding after many days. I have to stop reading this book so late. Im not getting any sleep.
I actually spoilered myself on Joffrey's death doing some research on the internet - I knew that he died, but not how or when. Even knowing that, his death still caught me completely off guard.
One of my friends accidentally spoiled the RW to two other friends last summer. When it happened the two spoiled friends looked at each other trying to decide if they believed it, and then you could see both come to the realization that it was probably true as their hearts slowly broke. Was pretty funny stuff.
Seriously do any of the Starks ever make good decisions? Robb's dead. Sansa is trusting little finger which I presume is retarded. Bran is a warg but is still crippled. Rickon is only a child and has not yet been given the chance to prove he is retadrded and arya just abandoned sandor clegane (at the spot where I just read) and just said valar morgolis. Which again I hope is a good thing but after reading all of this it only seems like a matter of time before something shitty happens.
I liked your post because I hate catelyn but in no way is she to blame for anything that happened to her children
small decisions by other characters have enormous ramifications, most notably think how much the story would have changed had edmure tully let tywin chase after Robb and Blackfish. Tywin gets lured into a trap away from king's landing, stannis takes king's landing, stannis kills the entire royal court, robb probably doesn't get hurt trying to storm the cragg, doesn't marry jeyne, doesn't get RW'ed, arya reunited with her family, etc.
Cat actually gave Robb good advice that he largely ignored. Her 2 goofs were arresting Tyrion and releasing Jaime. However the war really started because Tywin and Jaime are master overreactors. If Robb had listened to Cat winter fell wouldn't have been taken by Theon and he would've never lost the Freys
