I know this has already been posted by UA412, but i fucking love these: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EhRv7zHyYR0
One of my favorite things about ASOIAF is that the back story is just as interesting as the story itself.
Just so I'm clear on everything about Robert's Rebellion: Ned Stark had already married Catelyn Tully in place of Brandon, correct? Brandon and Rickard had already been killed by the Mad King, and Lyanna had already been captured by Rhaegar. Is this right? What was the reason Brandon/Lyanna and Rickard went to the Red Keep in the first place? It was this war that Ned brought Jon Snow back with him, right?
yea, you got it. Rhaegar captured Lyanna. Brandon bypassed Riverrun and went directly to Kings Landing where he demanded Rhaegar come out and die. Aerys took Brandon prisoner along with his friends and demanded all their fathers come claim them. then he took the fathers as well and killed them all. then he called to Jon Arryn and demanded Ned and Robert as hostages and instead Jon Arryn called his banners, Ned married Catelyn in Brandon's place and the rebellion was underway.
If I recall correctly, you're right on your upper points, and Lyanna was taken by Rhaegar before Brandon went to King's Landing. Brandon went to King's Landing and he was saying that he was going to kill Rhaegar in single combat. Aerys had Brandon imprisoned and sent to Rickard to come to King's Landing to either answer for Brandon or to re-swear fealty to him. When Rickard got to King's landing he was arrested. Then Rickard was roasted in his armor just outside the reach of Brandon, and Brandon had a noose around his neck and hung himself trying to get to save his dad.
This single page is safe, but I wouldn't click on any of the links. http://awoiaf.westeros.org/index.php/Tourney_at_Harrenhal
I don't think that's unreasonable, he had to fight a rebellion first and then find where she was being held
He had to overthrow a king... Plus just marching an army across Westeros should take a decent amount of time, unless you have Littlefinger's helicopter.
i was always confused as to why Rhaegar captured Lyanna? Was he just in love with her and was inbred-crazy so stole her?
When you're fighting with swords and shit? 2 years seems extremely long. I mean if a battle lasted a whole day that'd seem like a long battle. Maybe I'm the only one who feels that way...
Read on She was in Dorne which is the southernmost area of the 7 Kingdoms and also was somewhat pro-Targ at the time as Rhaegars wife was from Dorne but they were also offended because of the Rhaegar/Lyanna situation, whatever it was. Ned had to fight the war and then take king's landing which obviously took time. After that he rode to lift the siege on Storm's End (where Stannis was still holding the castle and only alive because Davos smuggled in some onions), and then he went to find Lyanna who was being guarded by 3 of the King's Guard
They have to take castles that are heavily fortified. There are times when they wouldn't surrender, and rather than siege the walls they would basically surround the castle and starve them out. That shit takes time.
These dudes are walking everywhere and fighting a war throughout the entire continent. It may take a full month just to get an army from Winterfell down to the Riverlands. Then you fight battles, regroup, move, fight again, etc. Plus there were multiple armies being led by both sides battling in different areas.
The war of the five kings has been going on since midway through AGOT, and that was like 3 years ago in book-time.
How do you figure this? I think Joffrey has a name day early in GoT and another early in CoK. After that, is there anything definitively marking the passage of time?
they're doing it just to make sure any showfags who don't know the series title knows what it is. So I get it, but..
It's not hard to look on the inside flap which book is which if you were purchasing it in person. Also most online bookstores say which one it is in the series when on that page.
...I obviously know the difference, just saying I understand why they did it. Only loyalists care about the change and all of them/us already have the book.
Just finished A Clash of Kings. Amazing how much different it was from the show. Case in point: late in the book, I finished reading the House of Undying stuff and wondered if I wasn't paying attention as well as I thought I was because it was so much different than the show. Then I re-read it and realized it wasn't me, but that it's just how it was in the book. Understand why they changed some stuff, but others I don't really get. Excited to start Storm of Swords, because the praise has literally been universal for it, whether from people on here or friends I know who've read it. Plan on diving into it tomorrow after work.
Maybe I will And as far as the whole Renly being gay stuff goes, I was also someone who was really on the look for it after what happened in the TV show. There were a couple things that I remember standing out to me. I think one was something Stannis said when they first met up in the book, about his bed being empty. There was something else as well, but I didn't think it was too obvious. Though it sounds like it really starts to happen in SoS, so we will see what's said. Really pumped to get into it tonight.
