I meant Ernie. Your avatar is Snoop Dogg; that precludes me from ever thinking of you as dorky no matter what kind of video game books you read

    bought the paperback yesterday

how are the clues in the paperback and hardback - but not in the e-books?

this is driving me crazy - it seems to be the biggest clue of them all

This was posted in another thread about the graphics engine for next gen gaming consoles. Pretty much how I imagined it looking when Parzival enters Acerak's tomb

just finished this. got home from work and read for 2 hours. this is the nerdiest nerd book ever. and i fucking loved it.

re: the possibility of the movie, like other people have mentioned, the purchasing of rights for everything would be extremely tough. i feel like they'd have to make up fake 80s games and movies for it to work.

somewhat related, but i got a bit of a Wily Wonka feel of the basic plot: poor boy finds the golden ticket, becomes millionaire, doesn't sell out to rival company, etc.

Yeah except video games >>>> candy.

And what's better than both? Sports. So how can we figure out how to make a derivative of this for sports. Owner of team dies, has contest where kid gets to inherit team?

enjoyed it. the retro nerd feel was great, but it seemed like the author was completely out of touch with contemporary nerdisms. that made it feel a little hokey. i thought the story was great, despite being on the cheesy side. one thing that bothered me was, while attending ogden morrow's birthday party, why were the Sixers trying to kill perzival and artemis? i'm not even sure if they'd even gotten the second key yet, maybe they had, but no one had completed the second gate i'm pretty sure. if they killed them at that point, couldn't they just catch up in like a day and get leveled up pretty high just by doing that again?

i would love to see a movie made out of this. it would be so kickass if they could get all the licenses, i wouldn't even care if it was kinda shitty, i would still love to see it

The bolded part was my biggest problem with the book. Suxorz? I mean really? Some of that shit was annoying. But it didn't take away my pleasure of the book, because who knows, maybe the nerds really do talk like that?
They actually are making one. No word on the licenses yet though. If they could somehow pull that off, it could be top notch. Don't expect them too though.

Sooooo am I the only one who thought this book was pretty poorly written? I love the idea and the premise, but I thought it could have been executed much better.

How so? Other than dialogue between characters being incredibly nerdy, I thought the writing was solid and the story was great

Yeah the dialogue was bad sometimes, but that's been mentioned itt. Other than that I thought it was well done.

It just seemed like he tried to cram as much 80's nerd lore into the story as possible. I understand that was kind of the point of the Egg Hunt, but it got a bit wearisome for me.

The dialogue was atrocious, even for ubernerds. It read like a bad young adult novel.

I read a review that I agreed with that made this point: when you have to explain every minute detail of obscure references you make, the point of the reference(s) kind of becomes lost.

Yeah, it's totally subjective. There were times when I was completely engrossed in it, and I understand why people love it. Again, I love the idea and the premise, but it just got a little wearisome for me.

Now, Wool.....I am loving this one.

How good is this book for someone who was born in the 80s? I never played Atari or rock out much at arcades. However, I did play the hell out of some NES and many systems thereafter.

Does this talk about gaming systems of old, or does Cline invent new ones in his fantasy world?

Damn you kids... I was born in 1967 and that shit was right in my motherfucking wheelhouse. I graduated high school in 1985, played D&D from 1983 until, well, now and remember watching War Games, playing Pac Man at the pizza place down the road and listening to Rush in my room reading The Hobbit like it was yesterday.

I think you could be executed much better.

Ok - Question, since I'm reading this now... What happens if an avatar dies?

I'm not sure if it's not supposed to be known or whether I missed it, if it's a secret don't tell me. Anyway, I'm at the part where he's discussing the Limerick for the first time.

It's not secret and it's covered a little later in the book but if you just can't wait that long and really want to know now hit the spoiler
You start over. Your avatar is dead. You start back at level 1 with no credits and none of your stuff.

So his buddy Aitch (remember, listening, not reading) does PvPs for money and has NEVER lost? That blows my mind. I'm assuming it's covered because he probably loses everything and subsequently loses his mind, hence why it is covered later.
