Best food city in Texas. The local economy here is very healthy so the restaurant scene is very healthy. What sort of info. are you looking for specifically?

Well, my mom is moving there permanently for her job, so I will be out there a lot especially because of a sweet hunting set up that comes with her job.

recommendations on food spots: best bbq, mexican, high end american, etc. Also, best parts of the city to go out drinking.

That wasn't necessary. All you had to say was, "Tell her to drive 4 hours north to Dallas instead," and his job would be done here

BBQ- Houston BBQ isn't that great. Gatlin's at its best is a solid second tier spot and is your best bet. Burn's original is barely a second tier spot in my mind and literally the only other place I've found really worth a damn. Luling city market would be the only other viable option and actually has very good sausage a nd bbq sauce.

Mexican- Houston has great Mexican food. Ninfa's on navigation is my favorite spot in the state. El Tiempo is awesome, especially for fajitas. El Patio has the best cheese enchiladas in town in my opinion, and they have blue margaritas that will knock you on your ass. Lupe Tortilla has really good fajitas. Armando's is a great upper scale Mexican restaurant. There's way more options than what I listed.

High end American- Pappas Steakhouse is the best steak I've had in Texas period. Can't say enough good things about it. Mark's is easily one of the better restaurants I've been to in Texas. Da Marco and Tony's are both super upscale Italian that people really rave about, I haven't had the pleasure of going to either yet. Reef and Brennan's (same ownership as the Nola joint) both have excellent seafood. There are tons of nice restaurants here because there is a yon of corporate money, probably only behind NYC and Chicago at this point. All the good chains you can think of. Lots of really unique spots like Oxheart and Feast. Uchi is a very upscale sushi joint in Austin and they just opened a restaurant here, its very good.

For drinking- depends on where you live I guess. Washington St. has a lot of options but its a little more bro'd out. Not really my scene. Lizard's and Mugsy's are the only bars I really frequent. West Alabama Ice House is an awesome place to day drink, get some tacos from the taco truck if you're there, awesome stuff. The most disappointing part of Houston is the women. There just aren't that many compared to the amount of dudes. It's kind of a man's city really. Lot of people moved here for work and the O&G industry is primarily comprised of dudes. Most of the decent girls get their pick of boyfriends real quick. I've been here almost 2 years and have been dating someone for 1.5 of those years. If you're trying to scare up some skirt, OTC and Roke (sp.) are good options. Austin and especially Dallas blow Houston out of the water in the pussy department.

Not sure what her living preference is, but there is plenty of high rise space in that area. Very nice options. Couldn't give house advice without knowing more private details.

She'll want to be close to all of the "hustle and bustle" if you will. She is 50, fairly recently widowed, and excited about living in a big city for the first time in her life.

She is taking over as HR director for King Ranch's corporate office and she has found a long term renter for her house here, so she will have enough money for something in a nice area.

    1. her office is 1 min away from mine. i am at 701 n post oak.
    2. to buy a house in this area will be steep...close to tanglewood, memorial and heights which are all average 400k (heights a little less). she should look at garden oaks, heights, spring valley, westbury, and katy is the nearest suburb.
    3. i second everything that JY posted. i will add i just had the best meal of my life at uchi, if she likes sushi/japanese.

Sorry to hear she is recently widowed and whatever way that may have impacted you personally. I do have to say, Houston is a great place for someone her age. It is my impression that "the scene" for that age group is pretty happening here. All these restaurants and stuff of course have nice bars and they are filled with people. If she would be interested in the museum and art gallery scene, Houston has a ton of that stuff. The people here are very friendly and there shouldn't be the same intimidating feeling of adjusting to a really large city that you might find elsewhere.

If she's looking for an apartment, condo or a house, she will very easily be able to find something close to her office.

it's their second largest profit making endeavor besides the hunting ranch itself, including all of the Texas agriculture.

their newest president came from the citrus arm too. I too think it is a little funny because it is looked at as such a "Texan" company.
