if you liked "the hunger games" i'd HIGHLY recommend a series called "divergant." only the first 2 books are out, but book 3 should be out by fall 2013. i could not put book 1 down.

what else has everyone been reading?

Since I've gotten my Fire, I've read

    Millenium Trilogy
    11/22/63
    Ready Player One
    Hunger Games Trilogy
ASOIAF up to AFFC (~350 pages in right now)

Feel like I read a couple others too, but those are the ones I can remember off the top of my head.

Millenium Trilogy was really good, but I'd probably recommend Ready Player One and 11/22/63 as 1a and 1b of what to read if you're looking for something. Both of those were great, flew right through them.

    Acacia Trilogy is pretty good:

Chronicles the downfall and reinvention of the Akaran Dynasty, whose empire, called Acacia, was built on conquest, slaving and drug trade. The Acacian empire, encompassing "The Known World," is hated by its subjugated peoples, especially the Mein, who 22 generations earlier were exiled to the icy northland. Having sent an assassin to kill the Acacian king, Leodan, the rebel chieftain, Hanish Mein, declares war on the empire. As Acacia falls, Leodan's treasonous but conflicted chancellor, Thaddeus Clegg, spirits the king's four children to safety. When the Mein's rule proves even more tyrannical than the old, the former chancellor seeks to reunite the now adult Akaran heirs—the oldest son Aliver (once heir to the throne), the beautiful elder daughter Corinn, their younger sister, Mena, and youngest brother, Dariel—to lead a war to regain the empire.

Been reading RA Salvators ice wind dale trilogy/dark elf trilogy. The first book sucks but they get better. Really dog food compared to Tolkien and GRRM but they are fairly short and easy to read

Yea I've read them twice basically. The first time, then did a re-read when the last book came out, will do it again before the final book comes out. I skim over the boring shit when I do the re-read though. There are more slow parts but I kind of expect that with 14 books that are each what like 700-1000 pages each.

Finished the first book yesterday. Only few things that got me:
    1. The "buggering". You know what I'm talking about. 2. Sometimes the action is hard to follow. I understand it's meant to be complicated because the character performing the action doesn't know whats going on so they can't really describe it.
Other than those minor things I really liked the story. Just started the second book and it seems just as good. I'm surprised no one has tried to pick this up for a series or a movie because it has a lot of good action and fights that would look really well on screen if given enough of a budget. Surprised at how popular it is and no one has thought to try it yet.

  34. Jaqen H'ghar

    Jaqen H'ghar Valar Morghulis

    1. Yeah I didn't want to mention that because it could be a turn off towards some people. It's a dark, grimy setting and that really sets the tone and makes the antagonist about as unlikable as he can be. Weeks wasn't exactly subtle with it either. I agree that was a little tough to read through. The antagonist didn't seem like nearly as strong a character as many of the others, and you could argue that the subject matter is a cheap way of getting quick hatred for him.
    2. I remember this during my first read too. I think that pretty much goes away once Kylar (and the reader) is more familiar with the magic and as a fighter.

I mainly loved the whole Durzo and Azoth/Kylar dynamic. The way it ended up with the cocky "I let you win" thing was great too. Also was a big fan of Logan Gyre and Gwinvere. I thought the start of number 2 and certain parts of number 3 were pretty slow, but other than maybe 100 pages in the whole trilogy, the pace is great and it never gets boring.

As for the movie thing, I think the first could be great, but the last of the three (and maybe 2 also, I kinda forget what happens when) might be tough to put on screen because there is a good amount of magic being used. But the characters and the whole wetboy dynamic would fit great. It's also only a few years old, so I'm sure it'll be picked up at some point. Also the kid stuff could be an issue, but that could be easily changed to something else, i.e., just the Dollface stuff.

There's a Durzo Blint prequel that's only like 100 or so pages that's pretty interesting/fun. I wouldn't read it until after you've finished the trilogy though, because some of Durzo's past is touched on in the 2nd and 3rd books and I'm not sure what the prequel might spoil.

Wool is more sci fi. I think it may kind of fit into a Hunger Games type of genre. It's a quick read and is not expensive for the entire series, which you will end up reading the entire thing. Night Angel is more fantasy fiction. It's much longer and fits more into the GoT genre. Just depends what type of mood you're in. I can't really say which one I like more because they are so different from each other.

I read the first book and a half of dark tower and couldn't stand it. I'm 2/3 thru the first Acacia book and I like it so far. It's not particularly fast paced but the depth of the characters makes it very interesting, and the plot is coming together smoothly and naturally. May finish it tonight.

Got the trilogy after see the recommendation here, and just finished all 3. I thought they were pretty good.

Brent Weeks says he's going to write another trilogy set about 20 years down the road when he's finished with the current series he's working on.
