Well the reason I bought it is because I'm travelling for work about 50% of the year, and there is never good coffee in hotels, and I'm not always by a place to get good coffee. I love this travel press. I just use the hotel coffee maker for the hot water and bring my own coffee wherever I go.
Same model. Bring mine to work each morning. Leaks a little at the press if filled up and tilted or heavily bumped but would rather have it than not.
Just bought a Chemex. I live down the street from a Williams Sonoma and at 35 bucks I couldn't resist. What the fuck is wrong with me? I drank a full 8 cup French press every day last week. This isn't healthy. I'm going to be free basing this shit soon. Where does it end, shooting up espresso as condensed as you can get it?
You just get to control everything. If something is off its all your fault, but it's superior to a drip or keurig deal where you get to control very little. Here is what I try to control: Whole bean freshness Grind size Water Temperature Ground to water ratio Ground blooming Consistent and equal ground coverage I'm sure I'm missing stuff but the point is there are very particular parameters for all of those things depending on how much you're brewing and what you're brewing it in. When you get all of that just so, it just feels and tastes like you're getting the most out of your beans. I'm a huge fan so far. I also enjoy French press but it's a different experience. It's not as clean of a cup, little muddier and cloudier but some people prefer that.
Found a pretty cunty local roaster that sells a single origin costa rican I'm going to try tomorrow. www.javapura.com

Looks like I might be opening a coffee house and bakery in the next 3 months. Just started negotiations with a landlord -- my client - the green coffee broker - wants to partner so we'll get all our green beans at cost - so our margins will already be better than most. Pour overs exclusively.
Same general area? I probably should talk to you about equipment you are going to use. I'm not a coffee guy so that side of things is not my strong point.
Finally got my air tight bean container, french press, grinder & kettle off my wedding registry. Making my first cup tomorrow. Give me pointers for 's
Also pour a little boiling water in the press and swish it around to warm the press up before you put the grounds in and pour the water on top. Wait 30 seconds after you pull the kettle from the heat source so it cools to between 195-205.
Yes, read that on the instructions. My grinder lights up for Coarse/Medium/Fine. So I'll stop when it hits coarse.
there's some of it, but most farmers we deal with are not. trust me that I am looking for a cartel hook up because then i can ship in beans and killer merck to chanman in florida then distributed to the west coast inside popsicles
Let the water cool down a bit for 10-15 seconds after boil Use wood or rubber/plastic as opposed to metal to stir Plunge slowly - take about 15 seconds
A place by me just opened up and they only do pour overs also. They've got three Varios, the pour over utensils and that's it, so their operating costs must be low too. Please post detailed exchanges between your baristas and customers looking for their large caramel/mocha latte with whip once they learn you just offer coffee.
I was at Stumptown in Portland and a guy asked the barista if they have cream and sugar available. The barista, in a cheerful tone, told him "if he wanted to ruin his coffee," those items were available and pointed him towards them. It was like a parent telling a child "I'm not mad, just disappointed."
Brand new french press got here today. Tomorrow morning I'm gonna be all while the peasants use the Kureg
I believe there's a stumptown annex in the works for LA. I work in his restaurant in Portland; it sounds like the brand (as more than just beans) is going to be pretty big in the next few years.
they can try. they sold out already and most hipsters have caught on that they are big corp in hipster clothing
anybody watch "Dangerous Grounds" on the Travel Channel? Dude just goes and gets exotic coffee, and makes up some conflict and runs around all paranoid. Would like to try some of his coffee though.
slowly. we're still in the branding stage. we decided on Eightfold Coffee Roasters. We did a cupping for 25 people with Bodhi Leaf Coffee (my client and partner) and Augies Coffee Roasters in Redlands at my restaurant. It was a pretty big hit. We were supposed to roll out the brand then but the branding wasn't done. That said, we have started the home roasting part of the business through Bodhi Leaf Coffee -- again we supply Verve, Portola, Klatch, etc with the bulk of their specialty green. So you can now buy green coffee direct and home roasters. So it looks like the new year is when we will start rolling out the brand.
Any recommendations on what espresso machine I should buy for the shop? They all seem to have so many similar but slightly different features and I can't tell what is important and what isn't.
I dont have much knowledge as to the differences of the professional models. I bought my machine from Chris' Coffee Service. They have a strong reputation for great customer service and could answer your questions. Every time I had a question, they'd return my email within hours. They deal with all types of machines.
Nice to see the home roasting offerings. Currently buy greens from Sweet Maria's and sometimes from the co-op, but it looks like you guys have some nice offerings.
Bought mine from Chris Coffee as well with similar great service about 4 years ago. They will match anyone's prices.
depends on your price point/what kind of drinks you're making/how many you project to do. around 1300 i'd look at the nuovo simonelli oscar that can be plumbed into your water source. if you can spend more, i'd go for the rocket giotto v2. can be plumbed also. sexy as hell and does a fantastic shot of espresso. i wouldn't skimp on a grinder as well.
When discussing espresso set ups, the majority of people believe the grinder is much more important than the actual machine itself.
Call Steve at Bodhi and tell him Tank referred you. Say what you wrote above and he'll send you out some free pounds and give you a great price. El Salvs right now are insanely good. He will be around tomorrow. In about 30 days or so a new site will be up that will basically try and take over a portion of what SMaria's does. The guy that runs it is smart and knowledgeable but an asshole. http://bodhileafcoffee.com
