Just voted Cloud Atlas since I am just about to start reading it. Finished Suttree up during lunch today. God tier book.
For Lonesome Dove should you have read the previous books, or can it be read stand alone? I want to read it regardless, but don't want to screw it up if I should read books before. If it can be read stand alone that's my vote, otherwise I'll vote Left to Right Already read World War Z and Grapes, scared of Cloud Atlas.
I had the same question. Lonesome Dove was the first book written for the series and was (is) a stand-alone book. McMurty went back and wrote four more, placing two books before Lonesome Dove and two after. So, it is the third chronologically but the first published. We're good. :)
When does voting end/ reading begin? Need to know how much I need to hustle to finish up current book
I was thinking about this and decided (barring strenuous objections from the masses) that we will end voting and start reading Friday evening. Yeah, it's less than a week of voting, but I think all the "important" people will vote in the first few days, no need to drag it out. Also, we can get back in this thing and not prolong it any longer. So, voting ends Friday, Aug 7 at midnight (I say midnight because I work 3-11 and will get home around 11:15pm Friday night). I'll reveal the winner and we'll start. Can you guys see the results? If so, then declare a winner earlier (5:00pm-ish) and begin.
Cloud Atlas. Not as tough of a read as some might think, just takes patience in watching it all unfold.
Cloud Atlas wins, start discussing here: http://the-mainboard.com/index.php?threads/cloud-atlas.113469/
