Loved it. I'm pretty sure that chapter was originally the short story that started the whole thing.

Howey first began the series in 2011, initially writing Wool as a stand-alone short story.[5] He published the work through Amazon's Kindle Direct Publishingsystem, choosing to do so due to the freedom of self-publishing. After the series grew in popularity, Howey began to write more entries to the series

I was going to write more about that chapter, but was distracted by food. (I remembered I had some BBQ pizza in the fridge).

    For real this time.
I thought the wife was right and when he goes out and it IS all green and stuff, I thought he was going to walk away. I thought the images they saw inside were fake. Was really surprised when the image IN HIS VISOR was the fake one and that is why all the cleaners cleaned without argument. They thought they were free. And when he died touching his wife's corpse... man, great writing.

Stupid question, as I'm pretty far passed this point... He went out, and was excited, so he cleaned. Then, as he walked to the hill he realized that it was all fake? Then the toxic gases of the outside essentially killed him next to his wife?

If it really IS that bad outside, why is it such taboo to speak about leaving the silo?

My guess is that, if someone speaks about leaving, there is a chance this longing will spread, so The Powers That Be curtail the shit out of it. Anyone even talking about the desire to go outside is culled from the group... by being banished to the outside.

Then why not just be honest with how shitty it really is out there? That's where I get caught up. I guess they say it's bad, but people aren't even allowed to talk about it. Why not be like "there's nothing out there, and humans can not survive."

Maybe to intentionally keep their numbers low? Keep the population in check? Plus, somebody has to clean those motherfucker screens, amiright?

Bingo. Opens up a lottery ticket and also gets the screens cleaned. Plus, they told them it was desolate and even showed them on the screens. The doubters go out to die and no false hope is spread.

When he got outside and everything was green, I thought for sure the rest of the book was going to be about him trying to find his wife in this big new world.

    Loving this book so far.

I thought the same thing. My view of the book at that point was it would take place outside of the silo and take us on this journey of some new Earth in our future. I was wondering what events must have transpired to make his wife not come back for three years. Had she remarried? Died? Did she finally have kids? Ooo! What of she had been pregnant when she left and Holston now had a three year old kid?! Then it all came crashing down and he died next to her corpse.

Just finished part 1. Really enjoyed it, was hooked pretty quickly. Spoilers:
Agree with Arkie Proud when he got out there. I figured his wife was right and his next mission would be to find where she went, what she ha been up to, etc. Did not think he'd just straight up die. The stuff that his wife was saying was super interesting though. Really wanna know wtf happened in the past.
    On to part 2.

Finished up part 2 on a flight home today. Continue to be intrigued.
Really liked the personality this story told. Wasn't just what was going on, but got into the personal lives of Jahns, Marnes, and Juliette. Continue to wonder what the end game of this story is. And after the end of part 1, I had a feeling part 2 would end with a bang, just didn't know what it would be. Jahns seemed cool, will miss her character. Interested to see how it affects Marnes.

Dammit, another dead person? Poor Marnes, rip. You could just tell he was not going to last long after the death of his lover. Enjoyed the stuff with the stars. And then all the files from the computers? Awesome. Good work from Juliette's dude to figure out what they can and are doing with the outside world. Continue to have no idea where this story is going, but I'm loving it. So damn interesting. Will probably finish part 3 tomorrow night.

Do you really want to know?

I can't remember, so if I'm wrong, my apologies... I think it never says, but it insinuates that he didn't. I can't remember what's in what book, but I may be going into book 4, so I'm going to spoiler this spoiler as well.
You kind of assume Marnes didn't kill himself because Juliette's friend also "hung" himself, but they basically figure out that he was killed and it was made to look like a suicide due to all the information he discovered.

So if there's a book 6, I wonder how long Howey will continue before the story is complete? Is he shooting for a TV show here?

    Finished book 1

When Allison asked Holston why he thought everyone cleaned even when they said they wouldn't I thought the answer was going to be that there was actually nothing to clean and the screen was just generating images of them cleaning to appease the people inside. I figured he would walk out and realize he could just go. Then he started cleaning the cameras and I was like alright well...

Then when he started walking away and getting cramps etc... I thought the suit was designed to kill him before he could get free and figured that when he got the helmet off he would get away...

    then he died :feelsbadman:

With regards to some of the things the rest of you said about the first chapter, they do tell everyone how horrible it is outside and that you can't survive, but being human we will question and come up with conspiracy theories like Allison did, which lead to uprisings in the past, so to keep people who want out from starting another uprising, they just send them out on their own right when they express the desire. Pretty damn smart imo.

Then again I just read the first book so I know nothing

    Finished Book 2

definitely didn't see Jahns death coming. It said at the end the poison was meant for Marne, but I think that just meant Marnes thought the poison was meant for him. I think it was definitely meant for Jahns though because the author made a point of mentioning that Bernard noticed them drinking out of the other's canteen when they were making their descent.

Going to be interesting to see where they go from here. I'm guessing Bernard isn't going to be found guilty of poisoning Jahns and I predict he may want to run for mayor. Juliette and Marnes will obviously oppose him in whatever he does.

    Will start book 3 tomorrow

    End of book 3 spoilers

SHE MADE IT!!! Thought Juliette was going to be toast, and wondered how book 4 would even start. When it became Bernard's POV the final chapter, I figured he'd watch her die and see what his plans were next. Then she completely stunned him. So awesome. I did think she'd go out like a boss though, and not clean, but wtf. How is she still alive? And there are other silos? :ohnoes: Awesome. Can't wait to see where things go from here.

    Keeps getting better man.

    I just finished. Spoilers below.
100% will read (:ohdear:) book 6 and all the remaining books so long as they keep me interested. I was SO effing pissed for a second towards the end. I honestly thought the ending would be like "Romeo & Juliette" with Juliette and Lucas dying together while engulfed in flames, so I was allllll ready to write me poor review on Amazon. THEN Howey comes in with the curve, nay, KNUCKLE ball having Bernard being the one who burns to death. I do wonder though why he decided to just take the death-by-fire rather than make an attempt to escape to another silo. To me, that would seem a little more consistent with his character. The way I took the faulty suit was that it was more on a timer rather than proximity, so if he just axed the "cleaning" aspect and jetted off to silo 17 he'd have a chance of making it.

I now picture Juliette looking like a burn victim, and was going to link a picture here, but think it'd be in poor taste. Anyway, I am really interested to see how things move forward, because here are some questions I still have....

Is silo 1 in charge? If so, do they report to anyone?

What is this "red x?" Do the people in charge have the technical capability to destroy a single silo? I'd like to know more about that whole thing.

Are people in silos because they literally can't live anywhere on earth's surface?

Are the Silo cluster Juliette is familiar with all modern day US? If so, what are the other countries like?

I'm sure there are more that I'm not thinking about, but interested to see how the story moves forward.
