    My thoughts:

Aragorn vs. Jaime - Aragorn with the blood of the Numenorians would win

Smaug vs. Balerion - Smaug for the reasons GRR stated

Melissandre vs. Saruman - Saruman for the reasons GRR stated

Wargs vs. Direwolves - Wargs for the reasons GRR stated

Ice vs. Glamdring - Ice for the reasons GRR stated

Tyrion vs. Frodo - Tyrion, question shouldn't have even been asked

Nazgul vs. White Walkers - Flying Nazgul

Cave Troll vs. Mag the Mighty - :idk:

Gimli vs. The Mountain - The Mountain, really not sure why GRRM went with Gimli here

Boromir vs. Ned - Boromir for the reasons GRRM stated.

Nazgul? Didn't a girl kill that fucker? Nazgul had a lot of hype then got their shit pushed in. Going White Walkers because I'm sure there are girl ones.

i agree with all of GRR's picks

kinda disappointed how he cut off the head of the legend of Ned's sword fighting capabilities...GRR really just brushed it off like he was no more than average

No way Jaime beats Aragorn and Ned's swordfighting skills were never the stuff of legend

Seriously? Jamie dedicated his life to being a master swordsman. In the history of Westros there are only a few who could rival him. Aragorn was a badass but he was never the swordsman that Jaime was.

Going by the books instead of the movies, no way. Aragorn was Dunedain, the blood of the numenorians is strong in his veins. Jaime is just a human who is great with a sword.

Aragorn is bigger, stronger, wiser and more resourceful than Jaime.

I just disagree with this. I say Jamie wins.

Also remember that as great as Jaime may have been, Aragorn also lived longer than most men and thus was 87 years old at the start of the series but still in his physical prime. I'll take an 87 year old Aragorn over a 32 or so year old Jaime, especially when Jaime spent most of the last 16 years standing around waiting with the Kingsguard and training while Aragorn spent the last 60 years traveling and fighting battles

I don't think you realize how much more badass the dunedain were than regular people. Jamie is probably more comparable to boromir.

those fellas had elvish blood in them. Aragorn was probably the baddest dude in all of middle earth and fought in more battles than Jaime could ever dream of. Plus like I said, Aragorn literally spent about 60 years wandering middle earth, fighting Orcs and trolls, protecting the Shire, and being a freaking Wizard's right hand man. Jaime would get got quick

so what you guys are saying is that it would not even be a fair fight because there is a ton of backstory not in the LOTR movies...I read that series of books and the Hobbit years ago but never read all of his other stuff plus forgot a lot of the subplots...very interesting, thanks guys, I may have to go back and re-read the series while waiting for Winds of Winter

Definitely go back and read everything (including The Silmarillion). Did a re-read this summer and really enjoyed it.

And yea it wouldn't be a fair fight

Basically. I haven't read the Simillarion and don't remember as much about LOTR as I do ASOIAF but the movies basically made Aragorn just the hardcore heir to the throne and ignored his age, the cool things about his people the Numenor (sp?) and the fact that he was more than just Strider

    Aragorn, not very close

Smaug if 1 on 1, Balerion if Aegon is riding him working his Targ dragon magic

    Saruman, laughably one sided

Wargs vs. Direwolves is hard, don't remember too much about wargs. I think direwolves are smarter and not too much smaller. Book versions tie, movie/tv versions wargs because they were huge and the direwolves arent as big.

Id actually go with glamdring, Elven steel had magical properties that valeryian didnt. Also It had incantations that protected Gandolfs arm when using it. Although Ice has the size and reach advantage.

Tyrion, not close. Frodos a bitch

    Nazgul

    Cave Troll

Gimli vs. The Mountain is tough, but surely the mountains reach would keep Gimli at bay

Ned and Ice would of put bitch ass Boromir in his place

Agree on everything but the last one. Boromir was much more of a warrior than Ned was. Ned was much more of a general. In a 1 on 1 battle I think Boromir would win. With that said Faramir would murk them both since the blood of the Numenorians flowed much more strongly in his veins than in Boromir's.
