Merry Christmas, fellow book-people. Here is the poll for our book in January. Three relatively new fiction, a non-fiction and a classic (albeit somewhat controversial classic) Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006LSZECO?tag=t0896-20&creativeASIN=B006LSZECO In the Garden of Beasts by Erik Larson - http://www.amazon.com/Garden-Beasts-Terror-American-Hitlers/dp/030740885X The Power of the Dog by Don Winslow - http://www.amazon.com/Power-Dog-Don-Winslow/dp/1400096936 No Easy Day by Mark Owen - http://www.amazon.com/dp/0525953728 Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov - http://www.amazon.com/Lolita-Vladimir-Nabokov/dp/B002G4W6PU
I have 7 friends that read it on goodreads.com and all are girls, also have 3 people as marked it "To read" on goodreads, also all girls. 3 5*s, 3 4*s, and 1 2*... Very popular book though, and would def be fine if it won... In order of want: Power of the Dog In the Garden of Beasts Gone Girl No Easy Day Lolita
I would to be happy to read all of those. Garden of Beast was my suggestion. I really want to read it. I like Larson as a writer. He is great at historical fiction, mixing in historical facts with the story. Devil In the White City is in my top 5
Graduating and other shit has had me pretty busy this month so I haven't been able to read the December book and I haven't read The Twelve in a while. Using some vacation from work on this week so I won't work a day, so hoping to finish The Twelve so I can get back into the club. Voted Gone Girl. Interesting premise.
Gone Girl Beasts Lolita Cool with any, voted for GG. Missed out on December; too busy with work and travel. Excited for this month.
Here is the lowdown on Lolita being in the poll. I only had four nominations, so I decided to put up a fifth on my own. I thought it would be nice to throw in a classic, so I started looking around. I kept hearing things about Lolita, all of them either saying "It's such a well written story, so evocative and elegant" or "Oh my God! This is so perverted!" Like you, I wanted to read it for the former reviews, but was gun-shy because of the latter. But if it won, I could be all, "Hey, wasn't my decision. It's part of the book club!"
Those of you who missed December should get around to reading The Shadow of the Wind at some point. Great book.
