Exactly this. I think it's amazing (right up there with Breaking Bad), but some friends of mine who usually like the same shows as I can't get into it. While "nothing happens" I think a ton of stuff does happen. It's just not a life and death show like The Wire and Breaking Bad can be.
I'm sure I'll like it, slow shows don't bother me. As long as the show has good characters I'll be good
I watched the first 2 (I think) seasons and enjoyed it but stopped for a while and haven't felt motivated to get back into it. So far there isn't a single character that I really 'like' in terms of me not wanting bad things to happen to them or me rooting for them. I think since it's such a character and dialogue based show it's hard to get into if you don't really care either way for any of the characters.
there's a scene in season two when mcnulty is fucking with rawls vis a vis the girls bodies in the container. he's supposed to be riding the boat, but he shows up at homocide one day for some reason i can't remember. he passes rawls in the hallway, salutes him, and gives him a "major," as he walks by all casual. the look on rawls' face is priceless. easily one of the funniest scenes in the whole series to me. wish i could find it on youtube.
I agree. One of my favorite little things about the series is seeing the Frank Sobatka campaign posters still up in the later seasons (4 or 5 I can't remember which one)
I've watched the series on HBOGO but want to buy the box set, but does anyone know if Blu-Ray is expected soon? I read a couple things where Simon perfers 4:3 but I couldn't get anything definitive
http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=320_1349824770 12 minute documentary on NYPD's "Stop and Frisk" program. Much of the key points are pulled straight from The Wire. Juking stats, jacking up non-compliant officers, and general shittiness to their constituency. They have audio of a stop and interviews with some officers.
Got my father into this show, he got hooked like most people who get into The Wire, and picked up the box set. Know what I'm doing when I go home for Christmas.
finally finished it a few weeks ago.At first i didnt think i was gonna get into then i got addicted and flew through the show.I thought people were just overrating this show but they were right one if my favorite shows ever.
yep...me too, thanks to HBOGO, I finally got to see it and slowly became addicted and then couldn't wait to finish it and finally join this thread just watched those little Wire Prequels last night as well, even those were great
I watched the show online and bought the boxset after the fact, but I only remember commentary for the first two episodes of the first season. Maybe someone can add to that. If it's more than that, I'd definitely say the boxset is worth it.
that's awesome. wasn't going to watch at first since it said Crown Heights but nice surprise and good looking food.
Finished the series last night... I thought it was going to be extremely disappointing given the hype it has received on this message board. It easily blew away my wildest expectations. Off the top of my head, Band of Brothers is the only series that I would put above The Wire. As a whole, it shits all over Boardwalk Empire and The Sopranos, something I would not have expected to say going in. Definitely one of my five favorite shows regardless of genre. The McNulty detective wake is definitely my favorite scene. The finale was almost perfect, IMO. I would have preferred that it would have ended with McNulty and Bunk outside the poor after the wake or something like that, but they could not have ended McNulty's run as police better than they did with the wake. Really an unmatched series in terms of the consistency of very good episodes and in the number of great characters that appear throughout the five seasons.
http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/ma...ter-on-the-wire-dies-20121214,0,3207915.story Spoiler Donnie Andrews, a reformed stick-up artist whose back story inspired the Omar Little character on "The Wire," died from heart complications in New York City on Thursday, according to his former attorney. In recent years, Andrews had created a nonprofit called "Why Murder?" which involved counseling gang members and working to help inner city kids avoid the justice system. He was in New York speaking at an event to promote that work, according to Michael Millemann. "He's a wonderful human being, and he had an important story of redemption," Millemann said. Andrews had been known for robbing drug dealers on the city's west side, and spent 18 years in prison for a murder he committed on behalf of a notorious drug lord. While incarcerated, he was introduced to Fran Boyd, a heroin-addicted woman who was one of the protagonists of the book, "The Corner." Together, they helped each other start over, and married two years after he was paroled in 2005. David Simon, the former Sun reporter who created "The Wire," had said that the Omar character was inspired by Andrews, who he hired as a writer on the show. Andrews also played a small part, as one of Omar's crew. He worked as head of security for Bethel AME church, and was ramping up efforts to expand "Why Murder," according to Millemann, who had helped win Andrews' release from prison years earlier and served as the foundation's vice president. "We have to get together as a community. We have to stop blaming the mayor. We have to stop blaming Obama. It's our community. It's our responsibility. It's our city," Andrews told The Sun in 2011. "We know who's selling dope in our neighborhood, we know who's shooting who. Don't point your finger at the police, 'You're not doing your job.'" In August, Boyd's son Deandre McCullough, a key character in "The Corner," died from a drug overdose. [email protected]

Finally about to finish my 6 month quest to finish The Wire. Only 3 episodes left in Season 5, been so good
Been awhile since I have watched The Wire. Just started again today and one of my favorite scenes just came across.
Just loaded the S1E1 DVD in the PS3 for the 3rd time. Fucking love this show so much. "This America, man."
Quite the final season for Jimmy, interesting how everyone turned out. Fantastic stuff, I don't think anyone I know would appreciate TW for how good it is.
Anyone else seeing this Droid Christmas tree commercial with the two black kids? The one that is at the house the whole time looks like dukie.
Anyone else get bothered the lack of weed smoking in The Wire? Just seems there would be some blunts being passed around by all the brothers dealing. I am on season 3 of my current run through and not one blunt or joint has been hit yet. At least I don't think so.
Thought about that. Really only time I could think it could have happened. Just saw a blunt in season 3 by some no names in the alley while the boxing guy got a gun pulled on him.
