So, around the end of ASOS I knew I was definitely going to do multiple re-reads of the series throughout my life, and one relatively soonish. I finished the series in August and planned to take at least a year off from reading, as plowing through thousands of pages over the course of a summer was a grind. With a job and a family it occupied just about every second of free time that I had.

However, here we are in mid-October and I find myself itching to go get A Game of Thrones and start the re-read now. How long did everybody else take between their re-reads?

I'm thinking maybe I'll start AGOT soon and take my time with everything, hopefully timing it so I can finish ASOS right around when the show starts back up.

 

started reading May 2011. I've read all 5 books and all 3 Dunk & Egg books twice since.

 

I am planning a re-read of ASoS, ADoC, ADWD over winter break. I rushed through them the first time and am going to read for more details the second time. I also need to read the Dunk & Egg stories.

 

Started watching The Tudors recently. I think Jonathan Rhys Meyers would have been a perfect Ramsay Snow/Bolton

 

He's only really described as ugly when he's Reek. Only thing I have found on his description is large lips?

Meyers just has a crazy edge to him underneath his arrogance as King Henry in The Tudors that I think would translate well to a lot of Ramsay Bolton's scenes/dialogue.

 

But yeah I agree that the guy they cast looks fine as far as how I imagined him.

 

I remember him being described as not handsome and fleshy. And that he would become fat with age.

 

season 4 is the second half of book 3 so either they're waiting till then for the Red Wedding (I don't think so) or it's the battle North of the Wall when Stannis arrives.

yea the only battle it could be is when the wildlings attack the wall. That doesn't seem nearly as 'big' as Blackwater though. Basically a bunch of dudes shooting arrows down the wall and then a few hundred (if that) wildlings attacking Castle Black

 

Maybe he's talking "big" as in budget. Could it be more expensive to do a battle scene in the snow, use CGI for giants, CGI to show the wall for an extended period of time, etc?

I have no idea. Genuinely just throwing shit out there.

 

I don't see how it could be anything other than the attack on the Wall. Tons of CGI not only for the Walkers and their attacks, but also for the Wall itself.

Can't wait for the season to end with the Red Wedding. Re-read the chapter a week or two ago... still hurts.

 

they've fucked up Jon's story so bad up to this point who knows where they're going with it.

 

It makes no sense to me why they did Jon that way. They ended up at the same spot just with a much sloppier lead up that probably confused a lot of non readers.

 

Has to be the battle at the wall. Hopefully this is when they evolve Jon from the bitch theyve made him into lord commander of the nights watch. Have the watch fight the battle then all hope is lost and Jon is sent to Mance and the boom, Stannis shows up and runs shit. Only thing I can think of.

 

I'm pretty pumped about Mance.

 

I'm such a book fag that I stopped watching season 2 about 7 episodes in because of how they strayed from the books

 

The Jon story sucked, and Dany's strayed pretty far, but overall it was still pretty great. You have to see Blackwater.

 

I still don't understand why they had to have Robb marry that foreign girl (mind you she was hot so it was sort of a lose-win) instead of Jeyne?

After recently re-reading the second book there were so many details they changed for no reason. My show fag roommates were all during the Arya-Tywin scenes while I sat watching silently thinking of the Jags fan gif.

 

the Arya-Tywin scenes were the best deviation from the books imo. those scenes were great.

 

I've read somewhere (maybe here?) that that is going to still turn out to be Jeyne. Martin went into detail about her grandmother or mother being from Volantis. Perhaps that's why she doesnt look Westerosi

 

I think those were important because there had to be a way for the viewers to get to know Tywin Lannister while maintaining the Arya story. The showmakers don't have the luxury of a narrator like Martin does.

Is it confirmed that the RW will be episode 9?

I think it would be better to do it during episode 8 if possible just because during episode 9 people are expecting something big which will ruin a little bit of the surprise. No one will expect a wedding during episode 9 to have nothing out of the ordinary happen. Obviously most won't expect something of the RW's magnitude but one of the great things about the RW in the book is that you had no idea it was coming (atleast for me).

 

RW as the very end of the last episode for months would be the perfect troll

 

Totally agree. I can see the value in not pissing off your nonbook audience for 9 months however, I think it would an incredible way to end the season.

 

they like having the big moment of the season in ep 9. season one Ned got killed in ep 9 and season 2 ep 9 was Blackwater.

 

I'm sure it'll be on episode 9, giving the last episode to reconcile the plot of the 3rd season. At the top of my head, I can't think of what was going on in the other POVs at the exact time of the RW, but I think Catelyn's "rebirth" into Lady Stonehart would be good for the last scene.

 

Lady stoneheart will probably be the last scene of season 4.

 

I think GRRM wrote Eppy 7. Any thoughts as to what would be going on right bout there?

 

Yeah, I just realized that doesn't happen until the end of ASOS. Fuck, I read that book too fast.

 

They'll have to fill in a lot of season 4 though if that's the end of the season. How much space was there between the RW and the prologue?

 

I'm pretty sure the Red Wedding was a little over halfway through the book. The Episode GRRM is directing could be Dany taking Astapor.

Yea, I could see them mentioning her like they did with the brotherhood this season, but they'll never explain who it is.

 

I wonder how acting contracts work re: characters who don't appear for long period of times during the books. Like will there be entire seasons when characters like Theon, Catelyn, etc. only appear for a few episodes?

I also think the best way to tell books 4 and 5 is to merge them so everything is happening simultaneously.

 

Think that's the way it'll have to be done. Plus, there's a lot that could be cut out of the 2 seasons of books 4 and 5.
