I'm glad he compared AVB to FDR with the blanket on at the beginning at the game. That was my first thought.
I'm very torn on this. part of me really loves it and part of me cocks my head every time someone says it all Brit-like.
Men in Blazers @MenInBlazers BRILLIANT! @markmashaw @MenInBlazers I just saw Lampard on the pitch. How'd he get in the stands so quickly? #epl
http://meninblazers.com/image/42357086790 Open letter to San Marino FA challenging them to a friendly with MIB listeners. Hilarious.
I've been getting broken images like that a lot on this site. if I open image in a new tab it usually works though.
Gus Johnson on today's pod, I'm curious about his approach to the 2018 WC. Announcing today's Real Madrid Man U match.
gonna give them a listen do i just start from the current ones, or are there classics that i should check out
start with most recent. then you can go back and pick and choose. i'm partial to the episode with John Oliver.
I just started listening like a month ago. Then went back a few eps just for additional entertainment.
There are probably going to be a couple of references or inside jokes that don'take sense. But you can pretty much just start from the last one.
newest pod is up with Arlo White. Great preseason stuff. The Raven of the Week is the best idea ever too and worth a listen. Basically a guy wrote in saying soccer should have its own version of the baseball bullpen where players warm up and then when it comes time for a sub, the manager comes out to the 4th official and signals him out which will include the new player charging onto the field to his own theme song. LOVED it
Don't like USMNT but I can even listen to these guys regarding that. Not sure what the hell they are talking about half the time though in regards to the USMNT. Only beef with the pod is the fact that they doctor up their fan mail. Then they laugh at it as they read it.
I still love Rog but I'm at the point where I can barely stand to hear Davies' voice. he's such a fucking asshole.
Feels very similar to a couple where the girl is really cool and nice and the boyfriend is just a raging dickhead to the point you start to question the girl's judgment.
I still think their balance is a good one. Davies is just a TV exec and sounds like it sometimes. But man this BlazerCon thing they are putting together is really impressive with who will be there.
It's hard not to cringe whenever they mention anything about listeners or viewers throwing money their way. Most of the shows Davies produces are terrible but I'm almost certain he has made around 8 figures off of Who Wants to be a Millionaire alone. Rog's wife is the daughter of a billionaire so when I heard how much standard and VIP tickets to "Blazercon" were I was a little turned off.
And I know some people are of the belief that a lot of their "Ravens" are planted emails. I was skeptical at first but once I started paying closer attention I found it odd that most of them were so beautifully written. So good in fact, that they all could be professional writers or journalists (cough cough Rog). They probably have an above average listenership when it comes to intelligence but that doesn't necessarily mean they're all good writers.
How much were tickets? Davo has money, definitely, but he's also been divorced at least once and has a big monthly nut I'm sure. Just because Rog's wife comes money, doesn't mean he benefits. I don't have a problem with them charging what the market will bear.
i think it was like 475 for a basic ticket and a grand for VIP tickets. Other than booking the menu, I can't think of any more substantial costs there would be from the event. The fees for the speakers were probably very low considering most of them were to market their leagues or teams. And they probably got money from Guiness and Mini as well.
Nah. People know that if they want to get noticed they have to spend time to outdo whatever the last Raven was. Everyone in turn steps up their effort. Just think of how Twitter jokes or memes work. Starts simple enough but with each new one people try really hard to (too hard) to get noticed. Or even better think of Mother's Day on Facebook where the first couple of posts in the morning are simple but by 4pm every girl I know is posting 3 paragraphs and a collage just begging to stand out.
I'd guess that that the mean of their listenership is in the low thirties. Unless someone that age decides to attend a writing class, they've probably maxed out when it comes to ability to write. As for the Mother's Day example, the attention they want is achieved by the length of their post but not the quality of the writing itself. Even back in the Grantland days when I listened to every episode (yeah I'm a podcast hipster, wanna fight about it) when their audience is just a small fraction of what it is now, the emails were suspiciously very well written.
Anyone else been keeping up with their Vice videos for Copa and Euro this summer? They've been pretty great. Rog has been drunk for a lot of them.
