Want to do something for dinner out tonight. Have wanted to try Ollie Irene, but my wife always bitches because there's not something like a burger or chicken tenders on the menu (she isn't that picky, just wants to be a b.....) Any other similar suggestions? We've done the Stitt places in the past two years, so thought we might try something different but same quality. Still haven't done Hot and Hot. What say you, TMBers?

A 20-year-old woman ran away from her home and family in Hoover to join the extremist Islamic rebel group known as ISIS, according to a report from BuzzFeed news published Friday afternoon.

The article identifies the woman only as Hoda, a 20-year-old who graduated from Hoover High School in 2013 and studied business at UAB before she ran away last November to join the Islamic State.

Mrs Polo and I just started going through the process of getting our humble abode ready to be listed. It was our first home and purchased at the peak of the ridiculous housing bubble. Prices in our area are finally decent enough where we wouldn't take a bath on the sale. Talked to a realtor today who said the average time for houses on our street to move is about 3 months. We will probably list it this summer. We are now trying to decide where to buy. She wants to buy in either Mtn Brook, Vestavia, or Homewood. I want an older house with character. I love the houses in Forest Park and am pushing for that and sending the little one to private school. What's the board think? Here are the two houses Mrs Polo would buy today if we could move our house:

polo is for poors My wife and I are basically in the same situation. I bought my house in '07 and am finally able to sell is without getting killed.
Up until a few weeks ago, our search was focused primarily in Vestavia. Then, one day, we drove around in Forrest Park and loved it.
We're already shelling out for Catholic daycare and St Francis or OLS would be a third the price.
I'm not sure if we'll end up downtown or not, but it's great to see other young professionals, like yourself, at least open to the idea. That wouldn't have been the case a few years ago.

    My remaining :twocents:

Forest Park is so bad ass, in theory. Obviously all anecdotal, but everyone I know who has bought there has either spent a fortune up front on an updated home or ended up spending a fortune in repairs and updates to a "deal." To get what you want, you still end up paying Mountain Brook prices.

I'd also discourage you from buying a wooden home in Birmingham (the Fairmont one). My girlfriend owns one and the maintenance is absurd. There are no water issues whatsoever with the home, but the boards are constantly rotting.

My gf actually sent me that briar oak circle house recently as a place we should buy when we get married. Go ahead and buy it so I don't have to.

Ideally, I'd like to stay in her current home (despite the wood) for fifteen years and then buy one in Redmont.

I tend to agree that you're going to end up paying MB prices once you figure in maintenance, but you'd also have a house that's a legit landmark and is a little closer to things. If you don't mind private schools, just do Forest Park/Highland Park. You're still super close to Mountain Brook. We're not in the same housing market as you here in Crestwood, but I wouldn't trade this for Vestavia even considering the private school pay-in.

According to the old ISIS thread, there's starting to be a big rift within ISIS because the defected Westerners are getting preferential treatment over the local ISIS members.

As shit gets worse for that group you know the locals are gonna rise up against them. I foresee some bad shit in this girls future.

Evangelist Matt Pitt 'thought he was above the law,' state argues as trial opens

The prosecution and defense both gave opening arguments today in the trial of Evangelist Matt Pitt, charged with a felony count of impersonating a law enforcement officer in Jefferson County.

"This defendant acted like he was above the law," said Jefferson County Deputy District Attorney Shawn Allen in his opening statement.

On June 15, 2013, former Army military police officer Brandon Vessels and his neighbor, Brad Lunsford, went to investigate a gun and all-terrain vehicle left unattended in the woods near their neighborhood. Vessels' wife at the time, Jillian, also accompanied them. Vessels and Lunsford stayed to guard the gun and sent Jillian to call the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department.

After about 15 minutes, Pitt and his cousin, Bailey Little, rode up on another all-terrain vehicle. Pitt told them the weapon and ATV were his and attempted to claim them. Vessels asked him questions about the items and why they were left unattended.

Pitt showed Vessels an honorary deputy's badge and told him to contact Randy Schlitz with the sheriff's department. Pitt then took the gun and left on the other four-wheeler.

A warrant was later issued for Pitt's arrest, and on Aug. 20, 2013, he was being interviewed by a WVTM-TV news crew on Red Mountain when Birmingham police arrived. Pitt was seated in the passenger side of a vehicle and got out and ran as police approached, Allen said. He went off a 15- to 20-foot high embankment and landed in front of other Birmingham police officers, who arrested him, Allen said. "When it came time to face the consequences, he ran," Allen said.

In her opening statement, defense attorney Carmella Penn directed the jury's attention back to June 15, 2013. "Matt Pitt and Bailey Little are minding their own business," she said. "They're just a couple of country white boys riding a four-wheeler in the woods."

She noted that both Vessels and Lunsford wore pistols in holsters as they confronted Pitt and Little.

"They're the ones acting like law enforcement officers in this situation," Penn said. "Brandon Vessels is the one who questioned, interrogated and detained."

The prosecution called two witnesses, Vessels and the responding officer, Jefferson County Deputy Nathan Nichols, who arrived after Pitt and Bailey had left and wrote a report on the incident.

Vessels said he was standing on the rifle when Pitt and Bailey arrived. "I don't want anyone to take possession of the rifle but the deputies," Vessels said. "I was trying to stall them."

Pitt was "shaky, moving his hands, touching his face a lot," Vessels said.

"I was protective," Vessels said. "I didn't want things like that going on in front of my house."

Vessels said Pitt asked him, "Why are you standing on my rifle?" Vessels said he told him, "Police are on the way."

Pitt pulled out a badge with a five-pointed gold star, he said. Vessels said he backed off then, thinking Pitt was a deputy.

We just sold our house and are currently looking for a new one. We have looked at the forrest park area and for the most part what is out there is either out of our price range or there is a reason it is in our price range. It really is crazy how many houses are going on sale right now. It seems like the good ones though are gone within a few days or the houses end up sitting for a few months.

Anyone have any experience with houses that have the jefferson county historical society plaque outside. It seems like it would be a huge pain in the ass to own one of those.

I assume it is, but that's a good thing. I am not sure of what guidelines are laid out, but I imagine you can't do much without approval.

One of the really neat things about Birmingham is how many buildings and homes have been preserved from the old days. In my limited experience in bigger cities in the South, most seem to be fairly new. Bham has lots of gorgeous old "skyscrapers" from it's old glory days and most are still standing. Most places would have razed them and put something new and shiny. I was thrilled when I saw the news about the Empire and Pizitz Building being renovated. The Marx tower is the last one that needs to be renovated. My wife works in the Woodward Building. "The Heaviest Corner on Earth" is my favorite city block in the South. The buildings are so unique to the area and are gorgeous.

Are there a lot of families with kids in that area? While owning a historical home is something I have always wanted to do, I don't at least want some other young families around. Maybe not to the crazy extent as Edgewood, but at least some for the little one to play with.

Was there anybody y'all know that was at the first Chappelle show last night? I'm wondering how different the two were. I didn't expect his act to be that conversational or for him to be so tolerant of all the audience interaction (it was great, regardless). Kinda reminded me of how Patrice O'Neal performed in his heyday.

Matt Pitt trial sidesteps Sheriff Hale, honorary badge list

What didn't happen in day two of the trial of Evangelist Matt Pitt on Tuesday afternoon was as intriguing as what did happen.

Attorney Rob Riley, son of former Gov. Bob Riley, appeared in court with documents including the list of every honorary deputy's badge ever given out by Jefferson County Sheriff Mike Hale – a list that includes Pitt. Pitt is charged with felony impersonating an officer in an incident on June 15, 2013. Riley accompanied three of his clients - Hale, Chief Deputy Randy Christian and Deputy Chief Randy Schlitz - who were all prepared to testify in the trial. They waited in a room outside the courtroom.

Instead, defense attorneys declined to call those three witnesses and Jefferson County Circuit Judge Tommy Nail told Riley his clients could leave, along with the documents, which were never entered as evidence. No explanation was given.

But there was still plenty of drama.

Prosecutors showed video footage of Calera police officers arresting Pitt in May 2012 for using blue lights to pass cars on Interstate 65. The video was taken by body cameras the officers wore. Chilton County Sheriff John Shearon, who was a Calera officer at the time, and Calera Sgt. Brent Ellison testified that Pitt said he worked for the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department. When Pitt was asked who his supervisor was, he told them Vince Lovell, who at the time was director of security for Pitt's youth ministry, the Basement. Officers then called Lovell, who they say confirmed Pitt's story. But the officers later determined that Pitt was not a deputy and arrested him. Pitt pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of impersonating an officer in that case.

Lovell and Jefferson County Tax Collector J.T. Smallwood, formerly on the board of directors of The Basement.

Smallwood said that he accompanied Pitt when he received a commission letter to receive his honorary deputy badge, signed by Hale and notorized by Hale's wife. "We felt Matt should be honored because he was doing a good job," Smallwood said.

Lovell testified that he, too, had an honorary deputy badge, and that Smallwood told him and Pitt they could use the badges to get out of speeding tickets and to get through airport security quicker.

Deputy District Attorney Shawn Allen asked Lovell if he knew the difference between a real badge and an honorary badge. "I absolutely do not know the difference," Lovell said.

Allen asked if Lovell knew the difference between a real cop and a fake cop. "I do not know the difference," Lovell said.

Lovell said that as The Basement ran events that employed as many as 18 off-duty police officers or deputies at a time, Lovell was given more authority to act as a law enforcement officer by Smallwood and the Sheriff's Department. "They started to give us authority," Lovell said.

That included encouraging him to install blue lights on his Chevy Tahoe, the same one that Pitt was driving when he was stopped by Calera police.

"You purposely added blue lights?" Allen asked.

    "Correct," Lovell said.

"You wanted it to look like a police car?" Allen asked.

    "Correct," Lovell said.

Lovell said that he assisted deputies at events and that his oath was the same as other deputies.

"I'm to uphold the oath of deputy sheriff," Lovell said.

Pitt's cousin, Bailey Little, testified that he was with Pitt during the encounter on June 15, 2013, with Brad Lunsford and Brandon Vessels. Little said they were scared and Pitt showed his badge to prove that they were "good guys," and never claimed to be a law enforcement officer.
