AP/Dortmund/Firing Line all confirmed for the Preakness. Should be some new runners and a handful of Derby horses.

Materiality ran a huge race just to finish sixth. Nightmare trip for him.

Two new shooters that are already being targeted for the Preakness are Divining Rod (winner of the Lexington) and Bodhisattva (winner of the Tesio). Don't think the latter has any shot, but I've always liked Divining Rod a bit. Whether he is on the level of the Derby top 3 is another matter, but I think he could be an interesting longer priced horse.

I love the ponies. I remember Thunder Gulch winning the Derby back in the day and it hooking me. I have seen some GREAT performances. Mine That Bird's amazing last to first race, War Emblem winning in front-running fashion, etc. There have been tons of good ones.

So, as of now, there are ten horses being considered for the Preakness. Five of which are likely, the others of which are just a possibility:

    Likely running:
    American Pharoah (1st Kentucky Derby)
    Firing Line (2nd Kentucky Derby)
    Dortmund (3rd Kentucky Derby)
    Divining Rod (1st Lexington Stakes)
    Bodhisattva (1st Tesio Stakes)

    Under consideration:
    Danzig Moon (5th Kentucky Derby)
    Materiality (6th Kentucky Derby)
    Carpe Diem (10th Kentucky Derby)
Competitive Edge (1st Pat Day Mile)
International Star (1st Louisiana Derby; scratched in Kentucky)

It's worth noting that its almost certain that not all of those under consideration will end up running. I would imagine that only one or two of the Pletcher runners (Materiality, Carpe Diem, and Competitive Edge) would run at the most. International Star was scratched from the Derby with a minor foot issue, so it's possible that may not dissipate in the next two weeks. And with Danzig Moon, he's being targeted for the Canadian Triple Crown races, so he may just pass on the Preakness to prepare for that.

I don't know much about horse racing. Why do so many horses pass on the 2nd and 3rd leg of the triple crown?

    A few reasons.

-Some of the longer priced horses that end up being well beaten drop back to face weaker competition that they match up more favorably with (a horse like War Story falls in this category).
-A few horses that are probably either better on the turf or running shorter distances, but they got the points to qualify, so they give the Derby a shot (Bolo is the best example of this on the turf, Upstart and El Kabeir as horses that will be better with a cutback in distance)
-There are always 1 or 2 horses that skip the Preakness to have a fresher horse for the Belmont- especially if their pedigree is strong for distance. Frosted and Mubtaahij look like they are headed on this path.
-And there will be a couple horses that pass the Preakness and Belmont to target the summer/fall races. I think this is what Danzig Moon will ultimately end up doing (although in Canada, not in the US).

Competitive Edge is the most fascinating of the possibilities to me. He's undefeated in four starts (including the Pat Day Mile and the Grade 1 Hopeful at Saratoga last year), and he hasn't ever really been tested. I'm not sure how he'll do with the jump in distances (he's never gone beyond a mile), but he's been regarded as Pletcher's most talented colt since his two year old debut- even if Carpe Diem and Materiality were Pletcher's top Derby contenders.

Hey guys, again, work with me, I want to learn this shit so badly.

What is the best way I can research horse racing stuff online? What sources would you guys use? Preferably free stuff BUT honestly, I'll pay a small amount if there is a shit ton of useful information.

Just as much so, if I go to the track on a weekend, what is the best thing I can buy/use to give me the most, best information on the horses that day? Up to this point I use a product off of Brisnet called Winners Choice but I'm sure there is something even better out there.

Here is what I currently use:

I'm not a huge dirtsheet or PP type of guy.

Basically, if there is race coming up during the weekend I think will have a large betting pool, I will take a look at the entries, hop on expressbet and watch the replays (which are free) of the last two races or so for each entry. A lot of times, horses stay in the same class/division week to week so usually two or three will be in the same one. Check who was coming at the end and what position they like, see who likes to stalk or set pace and go from there.

I very very very rarely just throw a track on or head to a track on the weekend and bet from the program. I am 15-30 days a year gambler and I do weekly at Hoosier Harness/Balmoral because I end up watching so many races that by the end of the year, I have a good handle on pretty much every horse in each division.

There's no shortcuts to riches in horse racing, bet tracks you know, check the jockey earnings if you're going smaller tracks as the top ones won't go horses that don't have something they like. You're on the west coast, a lot of the Australian races that are on late 1:00 AM east coast time are direct feeds without the commercials so the commentators discuss the race honestly when the cameras are off and you can pick up some longshots from there (I bet light $1 exactas there but I think I am up $800 on Australia the past 3 years from post-bar drunk and want to bet episodes)

Also, I think mt and I are 11 of 14 individually and 12 of 14 combined in the last three Derby's (Golden Soul/Commanding Curve/Carpe Diem were the misses) and that's basically from starting watching the 2 year olds in August until the derby in May. You've seen each horse race 3-6 times by then so have a good handle on who can do what.

BTW, my $10 exacta box with Firing Line/Dortmund from future pool 2 paid $550 on a $2 bet. I had $20 boxed. Arrrgh.

Watching TVG on tv right now betting tiny amounts of money and there is a horse named Tailored Swift. Tailored Swift is in last place and as they come around the turn the announcers is going through the horses and their current position and the announcer says "And lastly Tailored Swift who will never ever ever win this race."

    I fucking lost it
