A team is never as good as it looks when it's winning, and never as bad as it looks when it's losing. It's a long season. A marathon, not a sprint.

Seems likely Verlander will make his next start. He's got 6 Ks through 4 on his rehab start in Toledo. Don't think he's walked anyone. Sounds like he's sitting 91-92 and hitting 94 (if you trust the stadium gun, I guess). Hopefully he can crank it up to 96 or 97 in his last few innings and make me feel unrealistically positive about his outlook when he comes up.

The draft starts tomorrow. The guy a lot of people have been mocking to Detroit (Phil Bickford) tested positive for weed in a pre-draft test. Not sure if that takes him off the board at 22 and maybe 34, but it probably makes it less likely we pick him.

Surprised they passed on Buehler and Funkhouser. Will be interesting to see who they take at 34. Seems likely they go with another pitcher. Only hitters I can think of still around who they have been connected to are HS catcher Chris Betts (apparently hasn't been able throw for a month, which is why he hasn't been picked) and Arizona 2b Scott Kingery.

Some pitchers to keep in mind would be HS RHPs Mike Nikorak, Jacob Nix and Donnie Everett, and college RHPs Jon Harris, Michael Matuella, Kyle Funkhouser, Walker Buehler, Cody Ponce and Josh Staumont (throws 100 and is generally viewed as a 2nd rounder).

Bonderman's slider makes him tough to compare to anyone. His slider was nasty as hell. Seems like he has the same build, though. Probably a bit more velocity, but Bonderman had big time movement on his two-seamer at that slightly slower velo.

Thinking of Bonderman makes me nostalgic and sad. Before he got hurt, he had finally gotten to the point where he reached his potential. He was a 6 fWAR pitcher in his last full season.

2nd round pick is Tyler Alexander, LHP from TCU.

This is going to be dissed by a lot of Tiger fans. He wasn't ranked by ESPN or MLB.com (in a list of 200 guys). BA has him in the 320s.

If I'm not mistaken, the Tigers took Alexander late a few years back and made a run to sign him over slot but couldn't get a deal. Hopefully this is below slot, but since he's a SO that could be tricky.

Don't care for the second pick - sounds like a poor man's Tyler Collins. If they can squeeze a few more mph out of the lefty, he'll be part of a deadline trade in a few years.

gotta trust the scouts judgement when it comes to lefties that dont thriw partcularly hard. the OF huy definitely seems questionable. if you only projrct as a LF shouldnt you absolutely rake? other tjan being a lefty i domt see how he fits in our future OF ...

Today's draft picks (rounds 3-10), with Baseball America scouting reports:

3rd round - Drew Smith, RHP, Dallas Baptist (JR)
Smith's junior season has not been as productive statistically as would be expected out of a big righthander with a fastball that sits at 94-96 mph and touches 98. But scouts who want to dream on his excellent arm speed and athleticism could land an excellent bullpen arm if Smith can harness his downward-breaking breaking ball to pair with his plus fastball. His curveball has shown signs of becoming an above-average pitch in the past, but he didn't throw it consistently enough this year to trust it. Smith hides the ball well in his delivery and has some deception and glove-side run to his fastball. Dallas Baptist tried Smith briefly as a starter but returned him to the bullpen, and he projects as a reliever in pro ball thanks to the effort in his delivery and his fringy command.
4th round - Kade Scivcque, C, LSU (SR)
In a draft that is lacking in college catchers, Scivicque's excellent production and senior status ensures that he shouldn't be waiting too long to hear his name called. Scivicque has an average arm and his soft hands make him a solid receiver, but he's not as agile as teams would like. At the plate, he has shown the ability to drive the ball while making consistent contact. Scivicque does a good job of staying back and using his lower half to drive the ball. Scivicque's hitting ability likely won’t be enough to allow him to stick at first base, and he has plenty of work to do defensively to prove he can stay at catcher as a pro, but teams that emphasize offensive production from their catchers will be intrigued.
5th round - Cam Gibson, OF, MSU (JR)
Kirk Gibson's son has plenty of athleticism and when he rounds second and heads to third on a triple, you see the familial resemblance. But Cam Gibson doesn't have his father's physicality, which limits his pro potential. He's a table-setter who is often looking to slap the ball and use his top-of-the-scale speed to get on-base. Gibson is very spread out at the plate and doesn't use his lower half much in his swing. His batting average peaked as a freshman and has dropped off each of the past two years, but he has shown an improved ability to yank the ball for power. Defensively he has the tools to be a center fielder but his routes need to improve, as does his reliability (five errors as a junior). His well below-average arm is also a concern.
6th round - Matt Hall, LHP, Missouri State (JR)
Hall has one of the best curveballs in the country. It's a true plus pitch that he throws over and over, generating swings and misses, even from hitters who are looking for it and he can spot it to lefthanders and righthanders. His 85-89 mph fastball plays up because his curveball is such a weapon and also because he knows how to lull hitters to sleep. He'll sit 85, 86 and then pop an 89 that seems harder than that because he's messed with the hitter's timing. Hall has also added a slider this year that works as a nice occasional surprise. Hall is a divisive prospect for evaluators as there are few analogs to compare him to. Analytically, his numbers are excellent–he led Division I in strikeout rate and there's no doubting the breaking ball, but his well below-average fastball raises concerns. Some teams have him much higher on their draft boards, especially those who see him as a lefty reliever who can move quickly.
7th round - Nicholas Shumpert, SS, HS (CO)
The son of former big leaguer Terry Shumpert, Nick Shumpert was a regular on the showcase circuit and has been seen often by scouts as a result. He's a quick-twitch athlete with solid tools and very good baseball instincts. Shumpert has good bat speed but sometimes tries to do too much at the plate, getting pull happy and overswinging, which leads to a lot of swing-and-miss. He has above-average speed. Some scouts believe he'll be able to stay at shortstop while others think his range, arm and first step come up just a bit short for the position. If he does move, he could shift over to second base or perhaps fill a utility role like the one his father did during his 14-year major league career. Shumpert is committed to Kentucky where his father played before the Royals drafted him in the second round in 1987.
8th round - Dominic Moreno, RHP, Texas Tech (SR)
Picked by the Cardinals in the 33rd round as a junior, Moreno will likely go quicker this year as a senior sign. Moreno features an 88-93 mph fastball that has touched 95 mph and a fringe-average slider. That combo helped him strike out more than 11 batters per nine innings this season.
9th round - Trey Teakell, RHP, TCU (SR)
The long-time setup man to TCU closer Riley Ferrell, Teakell has been a very reliable member of the Horned Frogs bullpen for four years. Teakell would have closed for most college teams as he generates loads of strikes with a 90-94 mph fastball he throws downhill from a simple delivery with a short arm stroke. At 6-foot-5, 170 pounds, Teakell has shown the ability to throw his average slider for strikes or to bury it depending on the situation and he's comfortable throwing it to lefties and righties. He uses a split-fingered fastball as a change of pace. As a redshirt senior, Teakell will be an inexpensive option that a team can sign and then move quickly as he throws more strikes than most college relievers.
10th round - Cole Baumi, OF, Northern Kentucky (SR)
    - haven't seen any scouting reports

That Cam Gibson pick seems like a Patrick Leyland Special. Teakell seems like a guy who could be an interesting late inning guy, a Matt Hall somebody who turns into death on lefties out of the pen.

BA had Gibson ranked 179 in its top 500. Probably a nepotism pick as much as anything, but that's the range people had him going so it's not too bad. The Leyland pick was kind of an all-timer, even though he went in round 8 or something like that.

I believe we've officially reached the point where something is going to happen with Shane Greene. Beat writers saying they think he at least gets skipped next time and might go to Toledo for a bit. No clue what his options situation is, but this has been so disappointing after the strong start. I didn't think that would last, but didn't think he'd be bad or anything like that.

He's gotten off to hot starts a bunch the last 4-5 years and has gotten banged up in the second half, so maybe this doesn't mean much, but Cabrera is on pace to post his second best offensive season of his career right now, according to the advanced offensive stats. Not bad at age 32 and coming off pretty serious surgery last winter.
