Looks like we lost the old Ukraine thread. Lithuania is the first country to arm Ukraine with weapons.

Lithuania to become first country to arm Ukraine against Russia

Vilnius says other NATO members should follow Lithuania's example

Lithuania's ambassador to Ukraine says Vilnius is ready to start shipping defensive weapons to Ukraine to help the country stop Russia seizing more of its territory.

Marius Yanukonis told Ukraine's Channel 5 that Lithuania wanted to be the first country to openly arm Ukraine and hoped it would set an example to other NATO countries which he said should follow suit.

The move came as US Senator John McCain, during a trip to Kyiv, piled more pressure on the Obama administration saying the US must do more to deter Russia from escalating its military operations in Ukraine. McCain said that the US must arm Ukraine without delay before Putin became more emboldened.

John McCain, Republican US Senator: "The House of Representatives feels the same, overwhelming majority of American people feel the same. I can't answer for the president of the United States and his administrations, except to say that I know that this is shameful, shameful that we would not provide them with weapons to defend themselves. They are fighting with 20th century weapons against Russia's 20st century weapons. That's not a fair fight."

NATO has been holding military drills across several Eastern European countries in recent weeks as a way of reassuring NATO-member countries there unnerved by Russia's invasion of Ukraine; but Kyiv is hoping for more US support.

Last week the US Congress passed the National Defence Authorization Act (NDAA) which includes a provision that would give President Barack Obama's administration USD 300 million for Ukrainian security assistance if Obama signs the bill.

US military advisors are already training the Ukrainian military. About 300 US paratroopers arrived in Ukraine in April to train Kyiv's National Guard.

Britain has already sent military personnel to train Ukrainian troops, while Canada and Poland have pledged to send 200 and 50 instructors respectively this year. But Western countries with the exception of Lithuania have so far declined its requests to supply weapons.

Last winter Ukraine had a revolution due to the government backing out of a trade agreement with the EU at the last minute and signing one instead with Russia. The country is basically split in half by a river so the western part of Ukraine wants to be european, and the eastern part, which is predominantly ethnically Russian, wants to associate with Russia. The Ukrainian president was ousted and later found to be hiding in Russia. A new president was elected who said he would move towards European association so then "Separatists" from the east then started taking over government buildings and claiming autonomy. Ukraine said no you're not and fought back. The separatists started losing and then the little green men started showing up to "keep the peace," or intimidate Ukrainian troops stationed in the east to put down their weapons so they let them take over. The green men then pushed further into Ukraine and took over Crimea. The Ukrainian army launched a counter offensive and pushed the rebels back but then troops from "somewhere" started pouring into Ukraine from the Russian border along with heavy weaponry.

Flight MH17 was shot down by rebels thinking it was a Ukrainian jet. Russia is now launching rocket and artillery attacks from inside Russian territory. Groups of Asian troops have been seen in Ukraine, eastern Russians are ethnically Asian. War crimes committed by both sides, but the separatists seem to be more keen on doing so. Shooting pow's, desecrating bodies, violating cease fire agreements. There was an instance a few months ago where the pro-russians guaranteed a safe passage for a large number of Ukrainian troops and as soon as they were all lined up in the corridor the russians opened fire and killed scores.

(CNN)NATO announced late Wednesday it will triple the capacity of its Response Force to 40,000 troops.

"We have just taken another step forward in adapting NATO to our changed and more challenging security environment," Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said in Brussels, Belgium.

In light of Russia's involvement in eastern Ukraine and Moscow's recent decision to upgrade its military, including its nuclear arsenal, NATO is "carefully assessing the implications of what Russia is doing, including its nuclear activities," Stoltenberg said.

Stoltenberg also said the alliance is "working on how to deal with hybrid threats, including through close cooperation with the European Union," the organization said.

The Response Force currently has 13,000 troops and a new Very High Readiness Joint Task Force -- also known as the Spearhead Force -- will have 5,000 troops.

NATO isn't engaging in Cold War-style tactics, Stoltenberg said.

"We do not seek confrontation, and we do not want a new arms race," he added.

The multinational alliance has been conducting several military exercises recently. One took place last week in Sweden, and Russia's foreign ministry on Monday accused NATO countries of "sliding into a new military confrontation with destructive consequences."

About the same time, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the addition of 40 intercontinental ballistic missiles to Russia's nuclear arsenal.

    New small HQs

NATO also will set up six headquarters in Bulgaria, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Romania. They will employ about 40 people each. A Joint Logistics Headquarters, to help manage the rapid movement of forces, will be established.

The U.S. military will position dozens of tanks, Bradley armored fighting vehicles and self-propelled howitzers in those six nations, Defense Secretary Ash Carter said Tuesday. Carter said the equipment will be moved around Europe for training and exercises.

One analyst, retired Brig. Gen. Mark Kimmitt, said the size of the armor deployment Carter announced Tuesday showed it was more symbolic than strategic.

During the Cold War, the United States had the same amount of armor, a brigade, stationed in just one small part of what was then West Germany, said Kimmitt, the former military assistant to the Supreme Allied Commander in Europe.

"We are now talking about taking one brigade combat team and splitting it among these six countries. That should hardly be seen as a threat to Russia," Kimmitt said.

But the symbolism was important, he said.

"We're sending a message of assurance to our NATO allies. We have obligations, under the NATO treaty, to defend those countries if attacked. I think those countries in the region are going to be welcoming the positioning of these -- this equipment into their countries," Kimmitt said.

NATO and America overthrew the elected government of Ukraine and installed a Nazi dictatorship intent on murdering the Russian speaking population.

Russian volunteers rallied to the cause and liberated Crimea from the fascists.

then Ukrainian military, with Help from NATO, shot down a passenger plane and blamed Russia for it because they hate Russia.

This was all part of Americas master plan because Americans fear the greatness of Mother Russia because Russia is so fucking awesome. Westrern Sanctions are impotent and will only result in a stronger Russian economy with self sufficiency. There is no inflation from sanctions, it just seems that way because everything costs more.

Anybody who disagrees with this assessment is a facist-homosexual-imperialist that gets gulag...

Georgia just accused Russia of slowly eating maway at its borders

TBILISI (Reuters) — Georgia accused Russia on Monday of violating its sovereignty by placing border markers on the edge of the South Ossetia region, leaving part of an international oil pipeline in territory under Russian control.

Tbilisi has not controlled South Ossetia or its fellow breakaway region of Abkhazia since fighting a brief war with Moscow in 2008. Both host Russian military bases, but most countries and the United Nations regard them as part of Georgia.

Russian troops have been installing barbed wire and fences around South Ossetia since the war but residents say the soldiers have now erected border signs up to about 1.5 km (one mile) beyond the administrative border.

Condemning the action, Georgia's Foreign Ministry said part of the BP-operated Baku-Supsa oil pipeline was now in territory it regards as occupied by Russia.

"The Georgian Foreign Ministry expresses its extreme concern over the illegal placement of banners by the Russian occupying forces marking the so-called 'border,'" it said in a statement.

"It is noteworthy that ... with this illegal action a certain portion of the (Baku-Supsa) pipeline next to the village of Orchosani fell within the occupied territory."

Russia did not immediately comment on the ministry's remarks.

The 830-km (520-mile) Baku-Supsa pipeline runs from Azerbaijan to the Georgian Black Sea terminal of Supsa and has the capacity to transport up to 100,000 barrels of oil per day.

"As the operator of the Baku-Supsa oil pipeline, BP has been delivering Azerbaijan's oil in a reliable, efficient and secure way to the world market for over 15 years, and will continue to do so in the future," Azeri news agency ANS quoted Tamam Bayatly, BP-Azerbaijan spokeswoman, as saying.

Zurab Abashidze, a special envoy for relations with Russia, called it a "deliberate provocation, a very dangerous provocation" in a region where "security and peace hang by a thread".

Georgia is strategically important for Europe because of the pipelines that run through the country of 3.7 million, bringing it Caspian gas and oil.

The former Soviet republic is seeking membership of the NATO military alliance and the European Union. It has no diplomatic relations with Russia but says a foreign policy goal is not to antagonize Moscow.

Russia Inadvertently Posts Its Casualties In Ukraine: 2,000 Deaths, 3,200 Disabled

Russian president Vladimir Putin has decreed that all Russian casualties “in peacetime” be a state secret. In addition to criminal charges arising from divulging state secrets, families risklosing pensions and lump-sum payments if they reveal that their sons were killed in Ukraine. Mothers of soldiers’ associations have been branded “foreign agents” for collecting data on Russian casualties. Dissident Boris Nemtsov was murdered shortly before completing his study of Russian casualties in Ukraine. Russian civil rights organizations, working against the fog of official resistance, could confirm only several hundredbattlefield deaths.

Business Life (Delovaya Zhizn) reports on markets, finance, entrepreneurship, finance, and leisure, scarcely an outlet for sensational information. Its innocuously entitled “Increases in Pay for Military in 2015,” however, reveals what appear to be official figures on the number of Russian soldiers killed or made invalids “in eastern Ukraine.” Russian censors quickly removed the offending material but not before it had been webcached by the Ukrainian journal Novy Region (New Region). Here is the “top secret” material the censors removed (my translation):

Web-archived material removed by Russian censors containing casualty figures

“Compensation of military personnel taking part in military actions in Ukraine in 2014-2015.” In addition, the Russian government, in a decision about the monetary compensation of military personnel taking part in military action in eastern Ukraine, approved compensation for families of military personnel who were killed taking part in military action in Ukraine of three million rubles (about $50,000). For those who have become invalids during military action, the compensation is one and a half million rubles (about $25,000). A payment of 1,800 rubles is envisioned for contract “fighters” for every day of their presence in the conflict zone. In all, as of February 1, 2015, monetary compensation had been paid to more than 2,000 families of fallen soldiers and to 3,200 military personnel suffering heavy wounds and recognized as invalids (my italics).”

Sovietologists found many secrets of the USSR by digging into the Soviet press and technical and financial trade journals. That fallen and invalided military personnel are compensated must be reflected somewhere in budgets. As reported in Delovaya zhizn, compensation payments for those killed and invalided in Ukraine came to almost twenty million dollars, not a large share of the approximately $50 billion defense budget but large enough to appear in an appropriate budget subcategory.

The Russian censors have removed the incriminating information. The Kremlin will claim that the webcached material is a forgery. The figures, however, make sense and confirm what should be obvious to all: Russian troops are in east Ukraine and are being supplied with heavy weapons by Russia. Deadly battles–such as those at Donetsk Airport and Debaltseve–have resulted in heavy casualties on each side. We also know how the Russian dead are secretly transported back to Russia for furtive burials.

Despite this mass of evidence, only one-quarter of Russians believe the Russia has troops in Ukraine. Will the presence of 3,200 war invalids and more than 2,000 grieving families erode the belief that Russia is not conducting a war with its own troops against Ukraine? It seems that time and events will raise the number of Russians who believe the truth.

Ukrainian police used the Force when Chewbacca campaigned for the Dark Side.

Cops in Odessa wrestled with a man in a Wookiee costume and fined him less than $8 Sunday for illegally campaigning and driving without a license after he dropped Darth Vader off at the polls.

Vader — who is running for mayor of Odessa under the Internet Party of Ukraine — told cops Chewbacca didn’t need a license because the hairy beast is his “pet and general servant.”

Was wondering if there was a thread for this. Looking pretty likely we get some sort of conflict whether the U.S./NATO gets involved or not.

NATO war games also began in Latvia today and the Eisenhower Carrier Strike Group arrived in the Black Sea.

That would be seen as an act of war- Russia would be in Germany* before we could stop them conventionally. Both sides would dig in- Russia would have the old USSR back

Maybe Poland stops them for long enough for Germany and France to mobilize but I doubt it. Poland has a pretty damn big conventional military and they haven't forgot about Russia. Poland would fight like hell but Russia just has so many fucking tanks. Its absolutely insane how many tanks Russia has

Reminds me of WW2 and people thinking battleships were the shit then people started sinking them with relatively cheap air craft.

Like is there a reason that 10,000 drones couldn't destroy 1,000 tanks?

Just thinking theoretically. Like if there wasn't a legacy of armored vehicles and the first war ever was being fought next year, do you think countries would prioritize manned ground armor? Or opt for putting everything into unmanned aerial vehicles? What has a better ROI? Idk we haven't seen it yet (which is good).

The Apache Helicopter was designed specifically for fields of Russian tanks. It would be a problem for some forces but it would be relatively light work for us.

I’ve vented many times on the F35 JSF, but it and a few A-10s would thwart any Russian armor.

russias only scary asset for the US is the S-400 IMO
