report from almost a year ago, but hey people forget shit

The Pentagon is preparing for societal collapse due to Climate Change
    by PakaloloFollow

Most of us on this site are well aware that climate change impacts will exacerbate marginal living in poor and desperate nations particularly those in Africa, South Asia and the Middle East. These humanitarian and natural disaster impacts will be occurring in multiple places all around the world, possibly occurring all at once and on a scale human civilization has never seen before. But what about the developed world, particularly the United States?

National Security and the threat of Climate Change prepared by CNA and released in 2007 with an advisory board of 11 of the country's top retired generals and admirals summarizes those threats and how the military will need to adapt.

The report finds that in the US, security threats will consist of an unimaginable need for worldwide humanitarian aid and increasing migrations to the US from our neighbors to the south. This does not take into account that we will be dealing with our own catastrophic climate change impacts. There will be scarcity of water and melting of glaciers which currently provide water for millions of people. Drought and decreased rainfall will cause more severe droughts and devastate food production. For example, the Ogallala Aquifer, which provides 27% of the irrigated land in this country, is very stressed from human impact. The water table level is down 100 feet in some areas. Three of the top grain producing states, Texas, Kansas and Nebraska each get 70 to 90% of their water from the Ogallala which will be stressed even further with the predicted lack of rainfall. The Colorado River Basin, the source of water for 10's of millions of people, is already experiencing reduced river flow. The World Meteorological Organization predicts an increase in tropical hurricane speed strength and increased rainfall amounts potentially devastating coasts up and down the eastern seaboard, GoM, and the Caribbean as the climate continues to bake.

    From Earth Island Journal:

"As greenhouse gas emissions continue unchecked, opposition to the fossil fuel industry has taken on a more urgent and confrontational tone. Some anti-fracking activists have engaged in nonviolent civil disobedience and the protests against the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline have involved arrests at the White House. Environmentalists and civil libertarians worry that accusations of terrorism, even if completely unfounded, could undermine peaceful political protest. The mere possibility of surveillance could handicap environmental groups’ ability to achieve their political goals. “You are painting the political opposition as supporters of terrorism to discredit them and cripple their ability to remain politically viable,” says Mike German, an FBI special agent for 16 years who now works with the ACLU" Given this information the Department of Defense has created the Minerva Initiative.
"The Minerva Initiative is a DoD-sponsored, university-based social science research initiative launched by the Secretary of Defense that focuses on areas of strategic importance to U.S. national security policy. Its objectives are to foster and improve the Defense Department’s social science intellectual capital in order to address future security challenges and to build bridges between the Department of Defense and the academic social science community. Minerva will do this by bringing together universities, research institutions, and individual scholars; and by supporting multidisciplinary and cross-institutional projects addressing specific topic areas determined by the Department."

Nafeez Ahmed reports that "NSA Prism is motivated in part by fears that environmentally-linked disasters could spur anti-government activism".

But why have Western security agencies developed such an unprecedented capacity to spy on their own domestic populations? Since the 2008 economic crash, security agencies have increasingly spied on political activists, especially environmental groups, on behalf of corporate interests. This activity is linked to the last decade of US defence planning, which has been increasingly concerned by the risk of civil unrest at home triggered by catastrophic events linked to climate change, energy shocks or economic crisis - or all three.
"Unilateral changes to US military laws formally granted the Pentagon extraordinary powers to intervene in a domestic "emergency" or "civil disturbance"

"Federal military commanders have the authority, in extraordinary emergency circumstances where prior authorization by the President is impossible and duly constituted local authorities are unable to control the situation, to engage temporarily in activities that are necessary to quell large-scale, unexpected civil disturbances."

Other documents show that the "extraordinary emergencies" the Pentagon is worried about include a range of environmental and related disasters.

In 2006, the US National Security Strategy warned that:

"Environmental destruction, whether caused by human behavior or cataclysmic mega-disasters such as floods, hurricanes, earthquakes, or tsunamis. Problems of this scope may overwhelm the capacity of local authorities to respond, and may even overtax national militaries, requiring a larger international response."

Two years later, the Department of Defense's (DoD) Army Modernisation Strategydescribed the arrival of a new "era of persistent conflict" due to competition for "depleting natural resources and overseas markets" fuelling "future resource wars over water, food and energy." The report predicted a resurgence of:

"... anti-government and radical ideologies that potentially threaten government stability."

In the same year, a report by the US Army's Strategic Studies Institute warned that a series of domestic crises could provoke large-scale civil unrest. The path to "disruptive domestic shock" could include traditional threats such as deployment of WMDs, alongside "catastrophic natural and human disasters" or "pervasive public health emergencies" coinciding with "unforeseen economic collapse." Such crises could lead to "loss of functioning political and legal order" leading to "purposeful domestic resistance or insurgency...

"DoD might be forced by circumstances to put its broad resources at the disposal of civil authorities to contain and reverse violent threats to domestic tranquility. Under the most extreme circumstances, this might include use of military force against hostile groups inside the United States. Further, DoD would be, by necessity, an essential enabling hub for the continuity of political authority in a multi-state or nationwide civil conflict or disturbance."

That year, the Pentagon had begun developing a 20,000 strong troop force who would be on-hand to respond to "domestic catastrophes" and civil unrest - the programme was reportedly based on a 2005 homeland security strategy which emphasised "preparing for multiple, simultaneous mass casualty incidents."

The following year, a US Army-funded RAND Corp study called for a US force presence specifically to deal with civil unrest.

Such fears were further solidified in a detailed 2010 study by the US Joint Forces Command - designed to inform "joint concept development and experimentation throughout the Department of Defense" - setting out the US military's definitive vision for future trends and potential global threats. Climate change, the study said, would lead to increased risk of:

"... tsunamis, typhoons, hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes and other natural catastrophes... Furthermore, if such a catastrophe occurs within the United States itself - particularly when the nation's economy is in a fragile state or where US military bases or key civilian infrastructure are broadly affected - the damage to US security could be considerable."

The study also warned of a possible shortfall in global oil output by 2015:

"A severe energy crunch is inevitable without a massive expansion of production and refining capacity. While it is difficult to predict precisely what economic, political, and strategic effects such a shortfall might produce, it surely would reduce the prospects for growth in both the developing and developed worlds. Such an economic slowdown would exacerbate other unresolved tensions."

That year the DoD's Quadrennial Defense Review seconded such concerns, while recognising that "climate change, energy security, and economic stability are inextricably linked."

Privatization of intelligence just happens to coincide with "increasing domestic surveillance operations against political activists, particularly those linked to environmental and social justice protest groups".
NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden was a computer systems administrator for Booz Allen Hamilton, where he directly handled the NSA's IT systems, including the Prism surveillance system. According to Booz Allen's 2011 Annual Report, the corporation has overseen Unified Quest "for more than a decade" to help "military and civilian leaders envision the future." snip!
Department of Homeland Security documents released in April prove a "systematic effort" by the agency "to surveil and disrupt peaceful demonstrations" linked to Occupy Wall Street, according to the Partnership for Civil Justice Fund (PCJF).
Similarly, FBI documents confirmed "a strategic partnership between the FBI, the Department of Homeland Security and the private sector" designed to produce intelligence on behalf of "the corporate security community." A PCJF spokesperson remarked that the documents show "federal agencies functioning as a de facto intelligence arm of Wall Street and Corporate America."

In particular, domestic surveillance has systematically targeted peaceful environment activists including anti-fracking activists across the US, such as the Gas Drilling Awareness Coalition, Rising Tide North America, the People's Oil & Gas Collaborative, and Greenpeace.

I have often suspected that the increase in intelligence such as spying on American citizens, the crackdown on OWS and the militarization of our local police forces is no coincidence. The government is indeed preparing, with the help of the 1%, to crush the inevitable angry pushback against the government and the corporations once the climate change shit hits the fan.
Nafeez Ahmed concludes his article as follows.

The Pentagon knows that environmental, economic and other crises could provoke widespread public anger toward government and corporations in coming years. The revelations on the NSA's global surveillance programmes are just the latest indication that as business as usual creates instability at home and abroad, and as disillusionment with the status quo escalates, Western publics are being increasingly viewed as potential enemies that must be policed by the state.

The entire video is fascinating, but you can skip to the 4:37 mark for the discussion on the Pentagon's preparation for societal collapse due to climate change.

People tend not to listen to what you're trying to tell them unless you make outrageous claims.

I'm not really sure what to tell you if you don't believe that dumping tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere will change the atmospheric makeup and cause the climate to change.

    This isn't fucking rocket science.

1-Lying for a good cause doesn't make it right.
2-Once people find out your lying they tune you out forever.
3-When you mock people for not believing your outrageous lies, all you do is dig the hole deeper.
3-I'm not sure which strawman your speaking to in the second to last sentence.

Sad thing is the only way conservatives will believe in climate change is when something disastrous does happen. Then they'll find a way to blame the liberals.

:loldog: Like the consequences of every politically divisive issue ever haven't been exaggerated to get people to listen to your point. That's fucking retarded dude. And it's not even lying if some models predict it and scientists decide to broadcast the worst possible scenario.

    2. No they just double down on not listening to logic. And again, no one was ever lying. I said they made outrageous claims so people might listen to them i.e. broadcasting the worst possible scenario.

    3. Well people shouldn't be so fucking stupid and try to learn some basic chemistry.

    4. This isn't rocket science. It's not complicated. You increase the concentration of CO2 in our atmospheric makeup and heat increases.

Agriculture expected to take a $1.2 billion dollar hit this year. We're at record lows for snowpack and if there is little snow again this year it's going to have frightening consequences on our ag as they're quickly depleting reservoirs that fill up from snow run off.

They're currently running irrigation water through creeks in order to stave off mass salmon loss.

I realize you think you're being cute, but the situation is pretty dire in our state

    Do you object to it?

My brother's a pretty big conservative and he'll at least admit climate change is a real problem. His narrative is more about how, in order to make a real difference, we'd have to fundamentally change the way we approach life. The band aid fixes we're trying won't work and they're just thwarting business.

At least that's a legitimate point of debate. Denying its existence is just fucking retarded at this point and it's like Republicans feel like if they admit it, then they'll actually have to do something about it. So let's just close our ears instead of actually discussing our options.

Well I think it's a bit worrisome when records are constantly being broken. To play ignorant is completely fucking dumb.

I don't see how anybody could look at the amount of shit we pump into the environment and not think we are affecting anything.

It's also asinine to argue against a cause that's backed by every major science organization around the world and has plenty of evidence to support it.

Haha, so we're at the, "dude everyone lies get over it" point in the conversation? Cool.

No one is going to listen to you when you repeatedly tell them huge catastrophes are going to happen, and then they don't. That's not ignoring logic, that's ignoring liars.

And lol @ "this shit is all so simple". No its not dipshit. You don't know shit about climatology. Hardly anyone does. That's what it makes this whole thing all the more ridiculous. Its not about whether CO2 in the atmosphere causes temps to increase. Its about to what extent those temp increases (along with about 100 other factors) cause long term, and negative, consequences for the environment.

Literally no one with a brain thinks that pumping CO2 into the atmosphere is a good thing. But instead of having a rational discussion about the trade offs between limiting carbon emissions and the effect that has on businesses and workers, the left went full WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE and beclowned themselves to the point that even people who agree with the general premiss of climate change don't actually care. Which is why it always ranks outside the top 10 of issues people are concerned about.

For the 1000th time. Its not about whether climate change exists. Its about 1-What is the actually extent of the problem and 2-what is reasonable to do about it given the current economic climate and global competition American businesses face.

The problem is we don't know the answer to #1 because liberals have spent the last 25 years lying about it.

A lot of that is the consequence of the 25 years of bullshit. Republicans went too far with the welfare queen nonsense in the 80s and 90s and now you can't get a liberal to admit there's a bunch of waste, fraud & abuse in the welfare system because my side exaggerated the problem.

I don't know what else to tell you if you don't think some of this shit could happen at some point down the road. They fucked up in making a timeline for it I'll give you that.

It's pretty fucking simple man. If you change the climate by a few degrees it displaces a lot of different things. Whole ecosystems die off, move away from the polls, or evolve with the changing climate. That's what happens and usually that's not a big deal because this process takes so long that evolution can occur. The currents in the ocean change which might cause some terrible shit as well. It isn't very complicated but it's not like these are things I'm theorizing, these are the theories of http://climate.nasa.gov/scientific-consensus/

And to the bolded, holy shit that's rich dude. Why do you think it doesn't rank in the top 10 in THIS COUNTRY? Because half the fucking population tries to deny that it's even a problem at all. I promise you it's in the top 10 of every other country on this earth and it's a pressing issue for politicians who aren't bought by people who want to act like the problem doesn't exist.

You don't have to jump on any doomsday predictions to acknowledge that man made climate change is happening. That's just making up an excuse to continue to be stubborn and try to deny that we are affecting the earth in a negative way.

I don't deny the existence of climate change at all. Our climate is always changing, and I don't believe there is much that we can do to affect it,without drastically altering the way the entire worlds population behaves, and even then, good luck getting everyone onboard. This whole idea that "you have to lie to people about consequences to get them to listen to you" bullshit is classic neo-progressivism. The ends justify the means, as long as those ends are met.

We were told for decades what devastating, disastrous effects were right on the horizon, should we not change our wicked ways and do so immediately. Politicians seized upon tragedies like Hurricane Katrina to sell books, make movies, and promote agendas which would make them huge sums of money, around the very marketable hysteria of GLOBAL WARMING. The problem is that these people kept telling us for 40 years the end of the fucking world was around the corner, and it never came. It never came close. They were wrong on everything, so now it's time to move the goalposts again? Sorry, but we ar tired of this, and we're waiting for the experts to get SOMETHING right, so when you wonder why us pie-faced rubes who think that this is all nothing more than a bunch-a-speculashun, you have yourselves to blame.

I try and conserve electricity and I recycle and I walk or ride instead of driving on weekends. We carpool to the mountains and the beach, and I try to do what's right, in terms of minimizing our carbon footprint, not because of how often I'm snidely told by snot nosed twenty somethings how stupid and evil MMCC skeptics are, but mostly because it's just the right thing to do anyway, and I have to live on this planet for another 50-60 years. is it ok that I'm doing what you ask of me, even if I'm not doing it why you ask me to?...because it seems like you millennials have a real fucking problem with that shit.

Well guys, because some environmentalists supposedly once exaggerated a position and we have not made any technological advances in the last few decades at analyzing or predicting such outcomes, global warming will not happen as fast as they think because they were kinda wrong. I mean these environmentalists only told us that the world average temperature would increase, sea levels would rise, and weather would become wildly inconsistent before it really happened.

I say we ignore the signs and the evidence, because the worst thing that could happen would be the relocation of millions of people in 3rd world countries. I'm sure America will never have to worry about an environment that is conducive towards religious/political upheaval and radicalism where they will more than likely blame all their current problem on the American Capitalist Industrial complex. I cant think of any US political ideologies that were based on preventative measures geared towards stopping potential threats recently. It's not like any countries like Bangladesh are already under water

So pretty much if climate change critics actually came up with a credible, independent, scientific explanation for all the climate issues in the world instead of just holding onto a position(the one where it's just climate gonna climate) that conveniently can't be proven for another 200 +years, I'd be more willing to discuss this topic with them in a more professional manner. I cant predict, deny or argue something that has no basis of fact or history, because every fact I've read, states that the inconsistency of this climate has never been seen before.

The problem I really have is that skeptics dont come up with a counter solution to the scientific evidence, but instead rely on damaging the credibility of them because of past concerns from the past.

If critics attacked the science instead of coming up with improvable future predictions and relying on having to damage the entire concept of professional science as a method of advancing policy, there would be a much more healthy debate.

Instead denies take the same methodology as evolution deniers. Rather than analyzing past evidence and current events to come up with a prediction and hypothesis(you know the scientific method), they make a broad improvable prediction(it's just the climate climating) and then cherry pick information from the past to justify it.

The funny thing is there are predictions that were right about how it was progressing and at what rate. But those are conveniently ignored.

Climate gonna climate. too soon to tell if it will actually last so let's just ignore it for another 100 years until we know for certain

Is it true that the C-130 cargo plane burns 9,000 lbs of jet fuel on takeoff alone? If that's true, it frustrates commoners like me who feel guilted into conserving every ounce of energy when the government doling out the guilt does not.

Hyperbole, yes. But I'm all for conservation and responsibility...just would like to see a more concerted effort from the ones that could really model the effort.
