    Actually here it is....

Ok, let me preface by saying I was traveling with a friend from previous yacht week. This chick, who I’ll call “My Shadow” does not get a clue… This is how it all started just to give everyone an idea:

Me: “I think I’m going to travel a little bit solo before meeting everyone in Athens”
My Shadow: “Great. I’ll go with you”
Me: “No really, I like traveling solo. I don’t travel with girls.”
My Shadow: “It’s fine. I’m not trying to date you, I’ll go with”

    A week later

Me: “Hey, I went ahead and booked a flight to Zurich direct from ATL, so I’ll just meet you there”
My Shadow: “What flight? I’ll hop on it”

Then she proceeds to fly to ATL from LA and then hops on my flight for like $2k+. Which is $1200 more than what she could have gotten if she got a clue. Basically, this conversation has repeated itself over time.

Me: “I’m going to hook up with chicks and flirt with all of them on Yacht Week.”
My Shadow: “That’s fine, we’re not dating -- just don’t do it in front of me.” – This meant she planned on literally following me around for the entire trip, and never letting me out of her site. I literally tried to sneak away from dinner one time to go to the boat, and she like chased me down from the middle of dinner within 3 minutes.

Essentially, the conversation above repeated itself a thousand times over the course of the week. It consisted of her being a dumb woman, twisting my words, putting words in my mouth, insulting every girl I spoke to, and all other different manipulative things… Having her there was a fucking nightmare.

Ok… Now onto the rest, despite how bad that was, the trip was still an amazing experience, and I can’t recommend the Greece route enough. I'll add pics to each day later, but for now I need to get back to work.

    Long...

Day 1: Flew direct from ATL to Zurich, had lunch with our BVI skipper (who lives there) and immediately hopped on train to Vienna. If you’re not into the hostel thing, but still want to be social, then I’d recommend getting a private ensuite. It’s not much cheaper than a hotel, but nearly as nice, and that’s what we did. Stayed at Wombats, and the bar there was fun, we met some Irish folks and just drank with them.

Day 2: Walking tour in Vienna – I would recommend. It was pretty informative, and I personally enjoyed learning more about the history of the city. This is pretty much all I have to say about Vienna, it’s a pretty city, but I didn’t do much because I couldn’t get away from My Shadow.

    IMG_0794.JPG

Day 3: Arrive in Athens, wait for others from the boat, and then hop in a cab to the harbor. (If you go, plan on 25-45 minutes depending on your cab driver… This one took 45). We get to the port and one of the bars is already raging with music, and everyone is getting to know eachother. Luckily, our boat is already ready so we can go ahead and put shit on there. That night we eat a delicious Gyro and then go to the night club. This is probably one of the tamest parties of the ridiculous weeks in front of us.

Day 4: Poros… Honestly, this whole week is fucking blurry. This is the only day we had a legitimate beach party, and it turned into chicken fights, body painting, flash tats, and everything else. I’m using the app to remind me, but we used water taxis this night only, raged face, and met everyone else on the trip. It’s hard to distinguish details when you just go to a night club, and I partied hard during the beach party so all I remember is meeting a ton of people whose names I wouldn’t remember the following day.

Day 5: White Party day… This day was an utterly fucking amazing shit show. Our DJ this week was a legit expensive one, and much better than ours for the BVI. If you do this, make sure you prep for the white party. There were champagne showers, drinking, and at one point a pour Greek guy drove his truck on the road next to the club (the club was very open) and literally everyone jumped onto and on top of this guys truck raging. So outrageous, but amazing. I’m not sure anyone made it out-out after this shit show.

    IMG_0242.JPG

Day 6: Nikki Beach… If you do this, definitely get a room right away because they fill up fast. I missed the opportunity and had to sleep on the boat. Most people would say this is the biggest party of the entire week. Dancing, flashing, splash parties, making out, I think I saw people having sex. Just an utter shit show pool party at a fancy resort. Hah. I’d also recommend getting a cabana and bottle service.

Day 7: Regatta day… We actually had the photographer on our boat (since it was the best in the fleet), and that was pretty cool. It’s pretty important to get a group theme. This was a pretty relaxed day, and after the regatta we ported in Dokos. From there we floated around, some people hiked, drank casually, took the best pics of the trip. That night the parties were on the boats, the boat next to us had a karaoke machine, that was fucking stupid, and we sang karaoke most of the evening.

    IMG_0122.JPG

Day 8: Hydra… Best island of the trip. If you’re not into yacht week, you have to do Hydra. The Hydra day party was pretty tame, we got a lot of pics, did some cliff jumping, and generally hung out. People are starting to hit a wall at this point. Family dinner and awards. That night we went to this club on the water, which actually might have been the most fun I had the whole week for a night party… The DJ went hard, and it was insanity. This is the night everyone starts making out and hooking up if they haven’t already. This is also the night My Shadow chased me after dinner. Eventually, I got away from her snagged the lowest hanging fruit – some Italian chick – and left the bar. Took shots, only to see My Shadow behind me, at another bar in which no one was at. I pushed her away, and started walking around the island. Found some underground club with Italian chick, and then took her to these seats looking over the Aegean – made out with her but she would not bang me. :feelsbadman: Left the Italian girl, and then went back to the boat with a bunch of angry chicks. Ended up hanging out with the other 2 guys on my boat drinking until 7AM/sunrise.

    IMG_0127.JPG

Day 9: Last night. We were back at original harbor. I tried to get away again, but it was effing impossible. Left club, because My Shadow was once again driving me nuts, argued with her, and then just decided to pack as we had to be OFF the boat at 9AM.

Day 10: Fly to Zurich. Turns out it’s the biggest street festival in Europe with 1 million strong. Then we meet up with BVI skipper, rage, eat fondue, and then hang out at his place on top of a mountain, smoke a Cuban, drink some Italian wine until 2:30 AM and call it a trip.

    Do's and Don'ts:

Do: Get the best catamaran available
Do: Make sure you have a legit skipper
Do: Coordinate for the regatta, have a white party outfit
Do: Get a Cabana and room at Nikki Beach
Do: Put together a slush fund, and use the deposit (if you don't fuck up your boat) to handle groceries and alcohol for the boat prior to leaving, port fees, gas, bottle service and 1 boat dinner... Have a single point person to take care of this. It makes shit soooo much easier.
Do: Tip the photographer... He doesn't get paid or tipped otherwise. Also the best way to get sick photos
Do: Get a ridiculous inflatable... Most aren't. Mine was an 8 ft inflatable alien I named "Steve"
Do: Meet as many people at first as possible (as has been said before)
    Do: Slay girls
    Do: Make out with girls
Do: Buy a shit ton of water, beer, and champagne -- these get drank the fastest. Both times now we've had lots of liquor leftover, but those were gone or very close to it by the end.
Do: Invite people to party on your boat
Do: Ride on other boats if possible

DON'T: Bring a chick you're not into that is into you
    DON'T: Bang that chick
    DON'T: Let her come
    DON'T: INVITE HER
DON'T: Seriously, I think it's best to just not have any girls you know outside of yacht week on your boat... You don't want this shit to get back
DON'T: Overpack, I didn't wear half my shit.
DON'T: Get too drunk the night before to truly enjoy the white party or nikki beach.
DON'T: Only hang out with your crew

Hello friends. My Amsterdam trip is all set. Had a little trouble with bnb but finally got one booked. I'm also looking to visit a friend in Dusseldorf for a night early in the trip. Question for the thread, is $130/night for a bnb in center Amsterdam reasonable? Working against the clock I know, whole apt in the Grachtengorgel neighborhood, which is the canal ring that borders the city center, so walking distance to pretty much anything. Considering the other listings and the flea bag hotels I was looking at, this was cheap. Still though this trip got expensive for me pretty quick ...

The Shadow is legit. Never left his side at The Hangout Fest. Which is unfortunate as we had 20-30 girls running around our house at all times with loose morals and little clothing.

    Peru:

    LIMA
Flight was a little late getting in, so we didn't arrive the first night until like 2-3 AM. Went and had a beer, but were dead so we crashed. I'm glad, because the next 3 nights are arguably the hardest I've ever gone while out of the country.

    Friday. 5*
Stayed at Pariwana hostel in the Miraflores district (the only districts good/safe for tourists are Miraflores and Baranco, they're right next to each other. Both are really cool).

Woke up pretty early, walked down to the Ocean and then down to the Baranco district. Baranco is very cool, very bohemian. Reminds me a bit of uptown New Orleans, lots of nice houses, very artsy. Nothing crazy, just some sight seeing.

About 11:30 catch a taxi to La Mar in Miraflores, #14 restaurant in South America. Only open for lunch, and we were told to get there early. Glad we did, one of the best meals I've ever had. It was fucking incredible. Just ordered 3 different types of ceviche, and our server gave us a free tuna app as well when we got pretty drunk.

This is the mixto ceviche (octopus, clam, scallop, calamari and fish):

It all came out to about 100 soles/person, which is a little over $30, and we boozed the whole time. Like I said, one of the best meals I've ever had. If you ever go to Lima, go to La Mar for lunch. Get there at 11:45 at the latest, by 12:15 there was a 1 hour wait. They don't take reservations.

After a 3-4 hour booze-filled lunch, get back to the hostel and lay low and recover for a bit, meet up with some brazillians that are obsessed with American football. Shoot the shit with them at the hostel bar, then go to our other restaurant, Central, for 8 PM tasting menu. This was equally amazing, but we were still so full from lunch so didn't get to enjoy it as much. Was still incredible, had guinea pig 3 ways, alpaca, tuna ceviche, all paired by a professional sommelier.

Central was awesome, you need to get reservations at least 3 weeks in advance. Like I said, though, don't do it on the same day you have a huge lunch. I think we messed up in that regard, but we were time-strapped.

After that, stumble back to the hostel, meet up with a huge group at the hostel and head to Gotika, huge club on the beach. It was insane. Just clubbed it until like 5 am, saw the sun rise. We were the only Americans in the club, which was awesome. We were also shitfaced in the middle of the dance floor going crazy, and the Peruvian girls were loving it. T'was awesome. Made out with a black American chick back at the hostel, but nothing to write home about.

While I'd heard bad things about Lima, I had a blast. Granted, we ate at two 5 star restaurants and partied like rockstars, so there wasn't a lot not to like. Driving to/from the airport you definitely see some slums, and we were warned by everyone do NOT leave Miraflores or Baranco. There are cops on literally every street corner, and while that makes you feel safe, they have to be there for a reason.

Next day caught a flight to Cusco.

    Saturday:

Cusco is incredible, immediately up there with Hvar and Pai as my 'top tier' cities. Incredibly beautiful, and the party scene was out of control. Mid 60s during the day, gets down to about 30 at night.

However, keep in mind that Cusco is HIGH---sits at 12,000 feet above sea level, about 2K feet higher than Vail. I was lucky and the altitude didn't affect me much, but my friend was in bad shape. My face dried out a shitload and I had a nosebleed like every day, but that was all that happened to me (luckily). My buddy was nauseous, couldn't think, and was out of commission for about 48 hours.

Get in at about 3-4 PM, go to Pariwana hostel. Maybe the best hostel I've ever stayed at, can't recommend it enough. Right up there with where I stayed in Pai, Luka's Lodge (despite ohhaithur 's subpar experience), had a great time. It is a big time party hostel, so don't go if you're trying to chill. Every night they party at the hostel bar until 1-2 AM before going to the club. Tons of girls, tons of free shots, awesome party scene.

First night was a Mexican party, and they also paint people's faces like luchadores. There was a smoking hot Belgian girl that had her face painted and was at the hostel, she comes into the story later.

There are 2 main bars in Cusco--Mama Africa and Temple. Both are wild as shit and don't really close. We partied at the hostel until about 1, then everyone heads to Mama Africa. Very, very fun disco/club/bar. Get there and almost immediately meet a smoking hot Brazilian lawyer, Maria. We hit it off, and proceed to get weird on the dance floor for the next hour or so. She goes to the bathroom for a bit.

Remember the Belgian girl painted like a Mexican wrestler? While the Brazilian girl is in the bathroom, she walks up to me, starts dancing with me, and before I know it we're sucking face. Maria comes back and is, obviously, not pleased.

Not skipping a beat, Belgian girl grabs Maria and just starts making out with her. I'm sitting there just not really knowing what to do with my hands. There was another guy from the hostel just kinda shocked, too. It was awesome. This goes on for about 10 minutes (it was more like a matter of seconds, but it felt like forever). Eventually, the Belgian girl walks off, and while I'm able to get on Maria's good side, I went home alone that night for trying to be too greedy. No regrets. Get home about 6 and sleep until 10-11.

    Sunday:

Next day we walk around Cusco, which is surprisingly big. They have an awesome local market where you can get a big, alright meal (local Peruvian food is average to above average, nothing too great) for 5-10 soles, or $1-2. The market is really cool, too.

That night, the hostel was wild again, and we did the same thing---partied until about 1 AM and then walked to Mama Africa. I had been chatting via Facebook with Maria all day, and knew she was going to be at the bar again. Make amends with her, don't make out with a different girl while she's gone, and was able to get a private room at the hostel with her that night. May be the hottest girl I've ever slept with, but it was likely the accent.

    Monday:

Next day we visited the Sascayhuaman ruins (literally, pronounced "Sexy Woman") with some folks from the hostel. Very cool, only about an hour walk North of Cusco:

We also had to book a trek to Machu Picchu this day.

NOTE---if you go to Peru, and want to do a trek/hike to Machu Pichu, wait until you get to Cusco and book it a few days before. We paid about average $300 less than almost everyone we talked to. There was also no shortage of treks/limited availability, we had several offers from good companies to choose from. The only thing you need to book far in advance is the Inca Trail, which is limited to 500 ppl/day and goes through a lot of ruins. Everyone I've talked to, myself included, would recommend the Salkantay or Lares Trek. They all end up at Machu Picchu, regardless.

We ended up getting the 4 day/3 night Salkantay Trek for $230 base price. After renting a sleeping bag and after tips to the guides, it probably totaled $260-275. Still incredibly happy, this includes all meals for the 4 days and nights from a cook that goes with you, as well as horses to carry your backpack so you don't have to carry anything.

We were with a group of about 12 from all over the world--Germany, Spain, Aussies, California, Isreal, Chile--great crew. Our guide was alright, didn't speak great English, but was nice enough. He got us to where we were going. I think we lucked out because the people we were with were very cool.

The Salkantay Trek is fucking HARD. We hiked about 40-45 miles in 4 days. Wake-up was at 4:30, breakfast at 5, trekking between 5:30-6. It was intense, and keep in your mind your over 2 miles above sea level already. You need to be in decent shape to do this, 2-3 girls had to get horses on the 2nd day (which is the hardest). But it was also absolutely damn incredible.

    Here's from the first day:

The morning was kinda easy, but in the afternoon you hike about 2 hours up to this lake and it's steep as shit. But it was worth it:

At night it got down to about 20-25 degrees, but the tents were all in one "big tent," and it never really got that cold. Also, the food was surprisingly good. They fed us like kings, quinoa, potatoes, chicken, good soup every night. I guess they knew they needed to load us with calories.

Next day, the 2nd day, is traditionally the hardest, and it fucking was. Hike up to about 2.8 miles above sea level, and it's about 4-5 hours straight uphill after breakfast. Around 11-12, you get to Salkantay Pass, the highest point on the trek:

Walk downhill for about 2 hours until lunch, with equally awesome views:

Here's a shitty story: I got sick as shit the 2nd night camping. Felt like food poisoning, but I was the only one that got sick, so don't think it was that. Guess I just caught some sort of bug, was vomiting and pissing out my ass all night at the camping site. Slept maybe 1 hour, and had to wake up and hike 9 hours. It was one of the most miserable morning of my life. Had to stop and shit in the woods like 5 times, just sucked. Luckily, when everyone's hiking you get pretty separated and just meet at checkpoints, so I wasn't really holding anyone back, but it sucked soooo bad.

On the third night you usually stay at a hostel in Aguas Calientes, the city at the base of Machu Picchu. Cusco is approx 75 miles away, and everyone goes to Aguas Calientes the night before because you have to get there early or it's incredibly overrun. Got to a hostel that night, got some antibiotics, and slept about 10 hours before Machu Picchu.

The hike up to Machu Picchu is fucking hard, too. You climb 1,900+ original Inca stairs from the city, and it takes about an hour, hour and a half. You're sweating like a damn pig when you get there, but it's also the only way to get there early. The busses get there after the people who while. Our group woke up at 4 AM and got right up there.

Was worth it, because Machu Picchu is nothing short of the tits:

Hung out at Machu Picchu for a long time, drank some whiskey, took a nap, was awesome. Hiked back down to Aguas Calientes, and it takes a train + bus about 5-6 hours to get back to Cusco.

You don't have to do the trek to get to MP, but it does take about 36-48 hours from Cusco. The shortest way would be to just catch about a 6-7 hour bus to Aguas Calientes that gets in at night, go see MP, and then return to Cusco the next night/next morning. But, in my opinion, the trek was just as good, if not better, than MP. The Andes are awesome.

Got back to Cusco and crashed after the trek, partied one more night, but nothing too crazy happened. Still had a great time, stayed at Pariwana one more night.

    Some thoughts:
-like PJP3 said, the food overall wasn't too great, but it if you spend a little extra (think like $10 for a meal), you can have some amazing meals. Like I said, the food in Lima was some of the best I've ever had. We had some good meals in Cusco, too, but mostly it was average. Eat at Jack's Cafe in Cusco.
-try guinea pig and alpaca. Neither are great nor terrible, but should be tried at least.
-a little bit of Spanish goes a long way. English is not nearly as prevalent as, say, Europe, and at least basic spanish helps a ton.
-If in Lima, spend a good amount on at least one good meal. Research a little online and you can see Lima's reputation for good food. Lived up to the hype
-Cusco is insane, crazy party city. So much fun, and girls everywhere.
-Most of the treks are pretty difficult. I'm not a hiker or a camper at all, but was in pretty good shape before I left. It still kicked my ass. But I also can't recommend it enough.

    Awesome trip.

I think I found my Backpacking Thread recap from my trip. I added some afterthoughts, but it should be about the same. It covers Rome, Florence, Iterlaken, Munich, Prague, Berlin, Amsterdam, Bracelona, Lisbon and Porto to different degrees.

Made it back to the states last night, so I wanted to post while things are somewhat fresh. Went through and tried to clean up and supplement my last post with more tips and opinions. Tried to bold anything new. After Amsterdam is the rest of my trip.

Thanks to everybody for all the helpful suggestions and information. My friends and I enjoyed most everything that came our way via TMBers. Would be happy to help any future travelers in any way I can.

    General:

Hostels are a crap shoot. It all depends on who the other guests are. For example, MadHouse gets rave reviews from everybody, but when we stayed there it was 95% dudes, who were mostly very awkward. Then we moved over to Mosaic House, which is one of those commercial hostels or whatever and we met some really hot Swedes and had a blast.

Fucking in a hostel is hard. If you want to get laid, it’s best to put work in with the girls staying in your hostel. I heard a lot about how hard it is to get into a girl’s hostel when you’re not a guest there.

Be ready to throw your plans out the window.

Backpacking is a sprint. Feels like you're running every minute and on your feet for 18 hrs per day. This was due to our limited time in each city. If someone were to ask me, I’d suggest spending more time in fewer cities than what we did. Our trip beat us all down so much, but it was still a hell of a lot of fun. Just seems like we wasted a lot of time traveling or getting ready to travel that should have been spent getting to know Europe.

Chacos have been great, but wear them for a couple of weeks beforehand so you don’t have to deal with blisters. Switching over to athletic shoes every few days is probably a good idea, but having to wash socks sucks.

Doctors are very readily available in most of the cities we've been to. Got antibiotic scripts very quickly in Munich and Prague. But if possible, bring some general antibiotics like Cipro, Bactrim, Amoxil, etc. for whatever comes up.

Drink tons of water and then drink some more. A couple of our guys got UTI’s from the dehydration they experienced during our first couple of days in Rome. I had a camel back which may look touristy as fuck, but I’m a tourist that doesn’t mind looking like a tourist. [Afterthought: One guy who had a “UTI” admitted to me a few weeks ago that he just had an STD he got from fucking some dirty Massachusetts girl we ran into in Interlaken. Still drink water and wear jimmys.

Drank from the fountains and tap everywhere and had no problems. Rome fountain water is actually very good.

At the very least, learn to say hi, bye, please, thank you and excuse me in the native language. That little bit of effort goes a long way with locals. TripLingo is a cool app that can show you simple phrases offline.

If you plan to use your credit card in Europe call your bank and set up a pin number for it. Many places won’t let you use it unless you can type in a pin. Even better if you can get a credit card with a chip in it, as some places won’t take your card without one.

Lots of backpackers use the Chase Sapphire card. Seems worth it, but I didn’t have one.

Bring a student ID, even if it’s really old and outdated. They won’t know the difference and you’ll save a few bucks on entry fees at most places. Some places will look at a driver’s license and accept it as a student ID.

T-Mobile offers some sort of unlimited roaming data for $70 a month where the calls and texts are expensive. I think it would be worth it for google maps alone if you can find a cheap T Mobile phone. It’s a month to month plan, I think.

Google Maps (not Apple Maps) works pretty well offline, as long as you load the map on wifi before heading out. To see what I’m talking about, load a map, put your phone on airplane mode and walk around the block.

    Rome:

The Yellow has been my favorite hostel, so far. Having a hostel bar has been pretty clutch as far as meeting people goes.

Did the Colosseum pub crawl. It was a good deal until you get to the last bar where they fuck you and every drink is €10 and you're far as fuck away from anything you would recognize. Had a great time with some very young British girls.

British girls are all about American guys.

Fuck gypsies. So fucking annoying. Had a little gypsy girl reach into my pocket on the subway, which was unsettling. Weird how they're treated as subhuman over there and it's ok. [Afterthought: Really fucked up.]

Fuck the train station in Rome. If you're on a rail pass that needs to be activated, figure out a travel agent to do it for you or be ready for the agonizing wait at the station. Literally 3 people working at a time to help hundreds of folks that are waiting. So fucking dumb.

If you need to activate a railpass in Rome and the Termini is a clusterfuck, there is a stop 10 minutes away on the route to Florence. Jump on the train to that station and get off there to activate your pass. If the conductor asks you for your shit, hand him your rail pass and then play the dumb American card when he says something about activating it. We watched him kick a couple of Asian folks off the train at that station for having issues with their tickets. There are trains to Florence every 30 minutes or so.

Or look into a cab or metro to that other train station.

Don’t be afraid to play the dumb American card, it works more times than not.

At the train station, don’t accept help from anybody not wearing a badge/name tag of some sort. It’s just people looking to hustle some money out of you.

Nothing in Rome is free, including directions from seemingly normal pedestrians. Ask your waiter, a cop or someone who legitimately looks like they have a purpose in life.

    Florence:

I think we stayed at hostel plus. It was adequate, had a pool, but no interaction between guests on the one night we were there. It was also pretty far from anything worth seeing.

Florence needs one more than one night.

If you only have one night, take a bus up to Michelangelo Plaza, buy yourself a panini and a bottle of wine and watch the sunset. Sounds homo, but it isn't. Then walk down the hill toward the Ponte Veccio, sit on Veccio for a bit and listen to some random Italian cover Tom Petty, and then just wander around boozing.

We thought about going to a club, but we didn’t see a single girl inside. Still enjoyed the hell out of our time there.

    Interlaken:

Balmer's was cool. Had some skanky American girls staying with us there that were a good time. So many Asian folks.

If you're going to go canyoning, do the most extreme one. We couldn't because the weather fucked us (which it consistently did all trip) and the water level was too high, but the middle one was still fun. If you have ear problems, this might be worth skipping. One of our guys blew his eardrum on one of the jumps, but he’s had issues with his eardrums his whole life.

    Interlaken is expensive as fuck.

Skip the Hooters in Interlaken. We thought it’d be kind of cool and funny to grab dinner there. It wasn’t, just an expensive waste of time.

    Munich:

    Really enjoyed Munich.

We fucked up and didn't have a hostel when we got into town (around midnight) so we didn't find beds until 1:30 am. Wound up at Smart Stay. Place sucked and was far from anything worth seeing. That was our fault though. Wombats is the place to stay unless you’re up for the less conventional circus tent. Heard some rough things about Jaeggars.

Mike's Bike tour was legit. Our guide was a Texas grad, which was fun since a couple of us are TexasExes.

Beer Gardens are where you should spend the vast majority of your time. And then you should head to the wombats bar to hit on some backpackers. Chinese Tower Beer Garden is where we’d have stayed if the weather would have cooperated (great pretzels and stinky orange cheese stuff). Beer halls are still a lot of fun, though.

Doctor visits were about €30 a piece to get an antibiotic for a UTI and to have some sort of surgery involving the placement of tissue paper on a busted eardrum. I thought that was pretty solid of the doctors to cut deals like that.

Lederhosen are expensive and heavy as fuck to carry around Europe. Dumbest purchase of the trip by a mile. [Afterthought: But those lederhosen have been worn on several occasions and will continue to be worn on every semi-appropriate occasion.]

Second dumbest purchase was a liter glass mug from Hofbrauhaus. Try ordering it online, it’d be worth the premium for shipping. If you insist on buying one there, you can buy them cheaper at the Chinese Beer Garden than you can at the Hofbrauhaus.

If cars aren’t your thing, I’d advise skipping the BMW museum and Olympic park. The museum was appreciated by the car enthusiasts of the group, but the Olympic park was converted into a mini carnival and market for the most part.

If there is one train you’re going to show up 15 minutes early for, it should be the train from Munich to Prague. We had to stand in the hall for the first 2 hours of the train because it was so packed. It was on a Friday though, so maybe that played a part.

    Prague:

    My favorite city.

As mentioned, Madhouse was a bit of a let down, but that's just bad luck. I would only recommend staying there if traveling solo or possibly with one other person. They really frown upon group traveling, and weren't huge fans of us as a group, for showing up with 5. They did let it slide though. MadHouse will do you laundry for you (they let you fill a fairly large grocery bag and share if you’d like) for 200 crowns ($9.50 or so). Worth it if you’re splitting the bag with someone else.

Mosaic House was a good hostel. Had a bar, lots of guests, but the rooms were a clusterfuck.

Go skydiving. Cheap and absolutely fucking awesome. There might not be anything scarier than jumping out of an airplane with some guy strapped to your back who claims the name "Billy" but hardly speaks any English. I cannot recommend this enough. Watched my video today, made my palms sweat. It’s €155 for just the skydiving, and extra 70 for the video and pictures. The company was called Skywalkers.

Same story for pub crawls, avoid the last bar. The 5 story club is cool and a good way to pick up tourist girls, but there are better places to go.

It was gay pride weekend while we were there, so lots of places were brodeos. The Roxy was 90% guys, which I’ve been told isn’t out of the ordinary. James Deen was a fun, but more expensive, bar which was cool for trying to pick up local girls. They had some ridiculously hot girls working there.

Did a 3.5 hour walking tour. That's a lot of walking. This was red umbrella company, blue and green umbrellas are shorter. You'll know what I'm talking about with the umbrellas when you go.

The local girls were a lot more open toward us than I was expecting. Lots of good enough English speakers.

Drunken monkey was fun. British girls found us again.

Went to Goldfingers which is the most famous strip club in Prague by many accounts. It was also likely the most expensive and tame. Have been told that Darlings is the best option, especially if you’re looking to purchase a favor or two. The girls at goldfingers were smoke, though. Club K5 is a sex club.

Do not drink their local 151 type of rum, it’s rubbing alcohol mixed with gasoline. Absinthe is dangerous shit. [Afterthought: Eventually encountered a gopro video of a friend and I rapping an early 90s rap after shooting absinthe with the swedes for a few hours. It will not be posted.]

Had dinner at the U Prince Hotel on the rooftop. We had to make reservations. The food was alright and relatively inexpensive, but I’d recommend going for a drinks at 11 or later before going out. Especially if you have a girl with you because the view was excellent.

    Berlin:

Were only there for a day.

Was pretty disappointed in the place, to be honest. The Berlin Wall wasn't much to look at and checkpoint Charlie is a joke. I imagine the museums make the trip much more enjoyable, but we were pressed for time and decided a bike tour would be the best way to see as much as possible. I’d suggest the walking tour to anybody that goes there.

Wombats as a hostel and bar are really good.

The “alternative” pub crawl was pretty fucking awful. We dipped out after the first two bars which were a bar decorated like a Mexican day of the dead shrine and a goth bar. The goth bar was full of middle aged folks dressed in black leather

We went to a place called "The Pub" under some train tracks really close to Wombats. You have a touch screen that lets you select the person drinking and fill your own beer from a tap right in the middle of the table. We had a night train out of Berlin so we posted up for 4-5 hours to make sure we slept on the train. We had a blast, but probably pissed off some locals in the process.

    Amsterdam:

It's like New Orleans with outward condoning of prostitution and drug use. The city is fine, but not my favorite. I'd probably enjoy it a lot more if I was into weed.

Don't eat a piece of space cake before going on a bike tour. I got half the bike tour lost because I couldn’t concentrate on who I was supposed to be following. People in Amsterdam ride their bikes the way Italians drive their cars.

Mike's bike tour sucked here. But our guide was kind of a cock and I was high as a giraffe’s pussy.

Anne Frank House and Van Gogh tickets can be bought in advance to avoid having to wait in line for 2 plus hours. Way longer lines if it’s raining.

St. Christopher’s was a pretty decent hostel. The rooms were a bit muggy, but I think that’s just Amsterdam being swampy. The bar was cool, pretty active and cheap by Amsterdam standards. The smoking room was always pretty active. It has a club next door that you can look into from the bar area that looked like it was a good time, but I never made it in.

The Dutch people were kind of douchey. And their whole, "we're cool with weed and prostitution because live and let live" attitude comes off as pretentious. The weather put me in a pretty shitty mood, so take this with a grain of salt.

    Gorgeous women.

    Expensive.

Mysteryland was fun, but I wouldn't recommend it. It's a very local festival, not as weird as the videos make it seem, and the locals not on Molly have no interest in being around foreigners. I’m also not an EDM enthusiast, so others may know how to have a better time under the circumstances.

Unless you’re a Heineken enthusiast, I’d suggest using the money you spend on the tour at a bar.

Just walking around the red light district drunk (or high) was a lot of fun. There are sex shows and things of that sort to check out if you have the coin.

So many French fry and mayonnaise joints.

If you’re going to go shopping, the red lights around the window means it’s a chick, the blue lights around the window means it’s a chick with a dick.

We fucked up our hostel reservation and had to spend our last night in Rotterdam (1 hour train ride away). Stayed at Hostel ROOM, which was actually pretty great in that it had a small cheap bar where locals hung out and a cute girl with dreads bartended. [Afterthought: That hostel was the shit and Rotterdam is a place I plan to return to.]

    Barcelona

Budget airlines are fuckers. Had a 9:40 Vueling flight to Barcelona. Received a notification that the flight was delayed by 2 hours, so we took our sweet time getting to the airport. Arrived at the check in gate at 9:01 (literally). The desk lady told us that she couldn’t check our bags because their policy was that you must arrive 40 minutes prior to the ORIGINAL departure time. She finally checked our bags after some yelling and then sweet talking. I think she was fishing for a bribe. Stupid bitch.

Stayed at Sant Jordi Gracia for the first few days. I actually enjoyed it more than Sant Jordi Alberg. It’s in a neighborhood around a bunch of closely packed apartments that gives the feel of living amongst the locals. Beer and water was cheaper at the grocery store in the Gracia neighborhood and there are plazas every couple blocks where locals hang out every evening drinking, playing with their kids, eating at the cafés, etc. The hostel itself felt pretty new and the staff was great. It’s a 5 minute walk to the metro line that gets you pretty much everywhere.

Sant Jordi Alberg was good, too, but the rooms were much more crowded. It was closer to the action than Gracia. Definitely the more party hostel of the two.

Dinners at the Sant Jordi properties were €3 and worth it as a cheap meal and good way to meet some folks.

Talked to some folks that stayed at Kabul and it sounds like the ultimate party hostel in Barcelona.

Did the pub crawls which were pretty good. Two bars and then a club. Barcelona guys were very aggressive at the clubs.

The beach clubs are cool if you find a chick because you can take her to the beach once you’re tired of dancing.

Be careful with your drinks at the clubs. I was hanging out with a British girl when we were both drugged and robbed. That was one of the shittier experiences I’ve ever had.

The beaches in Barcelona were awesome. Nothing special in terms of beaches, but oh my goodness were there some fantastic tits on display. We went to Bogatell because some guys wanted something less crowded. Which, in retrospect, is stupid because more crowded means more topless ladies, imo.

There are Middle Eastern guys running around the beach selling cold beer for €1.50. We had one guy that we bought from the entire day who ended up giving us beers and waters by the end of the day.

The beach Mar Bella is supposedly the gay nudist beach.

Unless you go to the part of Parc Guell that you have to pay to enter, the park is just a park. Go to the pay part or skip it because it is a pain in the ass to get to. Nice views of the city, though.

La Sagrada familia was really cool. Worth the price of admission and the extra €4 to take the elevator to the top of the towers is well worth it, imo. You can reserve tickets online to dodge the line, but need to do it the day before, at least.

Watch for pick pockets especially in Las Ramblas. If some foul smelling liquid gets thrown on you, keep walking and do not let anybody help clean you up. If you catch someone trying to pick pocket you, make a scene and the vendors might jump in to beat the shit out of the person trying to rob you.

Paella is so good, tapas can be as well.

    Lisbon

Did Lisbon on my own which I really enjoyed.

Stayed at Home which was excellent. Great call ohhaithur. Mama was on vacation, so the staff cooked dinner, which was more than fine. The staff is incredibly nice and helpful, and the rooms were adequately spacious. Cool bar where people hung out until whenever in the morning and a nice smoking patio through the kitchen. [Afterthought: Place was fucking great.]

If you go on the walking tour with Sofia, you’ll fall in love.

Portuguese people love Pearl Jam. [Afterthought: Nothing wrong with that.]

Portuguese people also confuse my very minor Texas accent with being Australian.

The beach tour was pretty good. Would have been better if some hot girls had come along, but it was nice to spend a day doing nothing after running around Europe. We went to a beach an hour away that was nearly all locals on a nature reserve. It was a really pretty place.

Barrio Alto is the bar district which was really cool. People grab their drinks in the bar and then hangout in the streets. It was a great change of pace from the club scene in Barcelona.

Lisbon itself is a really cool city with a lot of really nice people, but the public transportation was fairly confusing. It wasn’t just Lisbon, but waiters lurking outside the restaurants pestering you to come in will never not annoy me to pieces.

Don’t buy drugs from the street guys whispering about “Mari, hashish and cocaine.” It’s either fake drugs or hashish that was transported by passing through the human body. I’m sure this point is obvious. If you say “Obrigado” and give them a thumbs up aimed at 10 o’clock they’ll think you’re Brazilian and love you, until they realize that’s one of the few Portuguese words you know.

They have some pastries called Pastel de Nata that everybody raves about. There’s a shop in Belem (2 train stops away) that is famous for being the originals. Or you can get them most anywhere in Lisbon if you aren’t too worried about trying the originals.

Belem is where a lot of the sites are. There’s a look out on the Columbus monument that’s only a few Euros and provides a great view.

[Afterthought: Do some research on Portugal and Brazil if you’re familiar with Brazil. I’m not, but I think that relationship is really interesting.]

Sintra is a day trip away (that I didn’t make), but everybody had great things to say about it. [Afterthought: Do this. Everyone I’ve spoken to since my trip makes it sound so worth it.]

    Porto

Getting from Lisbon to Porto is really simple. The bus takes about 3.5 hrs (an hour longer than the train), but is a couple Euros cheaper. I took the bus because this hot Australian girl was on it, but people said the train was fine. Both have wifi.

Stayed at Yes! Hostel which was an excellent recommendation from Gin Buckets. The location is great, really close to a lot of bars, clubs, shopping, the train station and not a bad walk from the bus station. The river is a 10 minute walk down hill.

The walking tour was good, but a little long.

Yes! Offers dinners, but I never had them, nor did I go on any of the pub crawls. Was only because I was burned out on pub crawls and never made it back in time for dinner. Wish I’d have done the dinners because people said they were good and the staff that cooked them were really cool guys.

This sounds strange, but if you book Yes!, try to request bed #5 in room 33. It’s an individual bed with no top bunk that looks straight out over Porto. Not a huge deal, but it’d be a really cool view to wake up to. Regarded as the best bed in the hostel according to the girl that checked us in.

If you walk out of the hostel to the right and turn left into the narrow street, there is a restaurant roughly 70 yards down on the right that was fantastic. The owner was our server for dinner and he hooked us up with a bunch of booze. He loved having foreigners eating at his restaurant. Portuguese whiskey is made from grape seeds and will put some hair on your chest.

A bunch of restaurants had grills out in the street where they did their cooking, which was pretty cool.

Port wine is not my thing, but touring the wine cellars was alright. Everybody suggests Taylor’s since they give you 3 samples while everybody else only gives you 2.

On my last day in Porto I rented a scooter to cruise around town. If you’re renting a scooter in Porto, rent from Vieguini. They let you rent for half a day for €20 (while most others don’t allow half days) or a full 24 hrs for €28 (while most others are €30). I really enjoyed riding out to the beaches in Porto and across the bridge in Gaia. [Afterthought: I want to move to Gaia.]

Be careful with the one ways (or just pay attention to what you’re doing). I was cruising the wrong way down a one way for 5 solid minutes before a cop stopped me. Wasn’t a big deal, he just thought I was an idiot.

The bar culture in Porto was a lot like Lisbon, even at the clubs.

I’m out of things for now, but I’ll update if anything else comes back to me.

    1. No
    2. I'm dead fucking serious, and not exaggerating. I was a complete dick to her at Hangout as well. I basically told her to get away from me, among other mean things. It makes me look like a dick to everyone else around, but it's required even though it doesn't fucking work for some reason. I've never had to be this mean to anyone who still wouldn't get a clue, and words can't explain how infuriating it is. Plan is to never see her again atm. I'll be e-friends with her, but I can't put up with that shit again.

Yeah, but we were on the same boat, and I had to be at least cordial... Anyway, that was before Hangout when I didn't realize she'd be this ridiculous. I don't even want to call her crazy, because she doesn't show her ass and never plays the "woe is me card" like most girls, she just literally follows me around and gets jealous.

Now, the only way I can see avoiding this happening again is by never hanging out with her again, or at the very least, never in a situation where I want to hook-up with people. That's the only way I see this shit as unavoidable now.

Your boy still do the GoPro vids for $250? I have over 1 1/2 hours of footage and over 700 pictures, mainly from the trek/Machu Picchu. I also took it to the club a couple times. The individual videos are incredible, but I spent about 30 minutes trying to splice/edit and got nowhere. Hopeless venture.

Could you link the vid he made for you, and possibly 1 or 2 more, so that I can show them to my friend that went with me? Trying to convince him to split the cost.

    Much obliged, sir.

Gin Buckets and I had discussed JVD as well. My TYW skipper messaged me a week or so ago (he's in BVI) and told me to come down there and he'd skipper a yacht for us for way cheaper than TYW.

There is a great bar on the west side that serves Dutch beer called the Proeflokaal Arendsnest. Highly recommend.

Also, hit up the Albert Kupyt market and try some hering and fresh stroopwafels.

Best late night snack is bitterballen. Liked the Van Gogh museum too.

Also if you like Indonesian food I would try a rijsttafel. Fantastic meal.
