I will be up ITT soon. Our first is due in March. We have an appointment to find out the sex on Wednesday, however its a mere formality since my wife has already taken the Chinese Gender Test.

As of 5:31 PM CST, I can officially post in this thread as a dad. My son came in at 8lbs 8oz and 21.75 inches.

This is without a doubt the greatest feeling in the world and I'm so pumped to be a member of the dad club.

texting with a buddy tonight who has 3 kids, all under the age of 5, said he wished he could mute them for the rest of the night. I'm conflicted with those that say kids r awesome in itt and those that say they're annoying as shit.

So, I had to leave after the sonogram appointment, but got a frantic call from my wife as I was pulling in to work. In her appointment, the doctor said that they saw a "bright spot" on the sonogram, which is also called echogenic intracardiac focus. It's thought to be mineral or calcium deposits in the hesrt's muscle. The doctor wasn't overly concerned but did say that years ago, some linked it to chromosomal issues. Modern medicine has basically ruled that out and calls it a variation, but the wife has been in tears all morning. Anyone else go through this?

I didn't, but a friend did and it cleared itself up in a couple of weeks and caused no issues. In this case, wikipedia is your friend:

Echogenic intracardiac focus (EIF) is a small bright spot seen in the baby’s heart on an ultrasound exam. This is thought to represent mineralization, or small deposits of calcium, in the muscle of the heart. EIFs are found in about 3-5% of normal pregnancies and cause no health problems.

Yeah, have been googling and researching nonstop. It all seems to be pretty reassuring but I can't help but worry. We have always denied the blood work screening, but she did it today for peace of mind.

Remembering the conversation I had when my buddy's kid had that, I think they had already ruled out chromosomal issues so it wasn't a consideration and the doctor told my buddy it wasn't anything to worry about unless it lasted well into the 3rd trimester.

And I think everybody should do the testing/screening. Not for peace of mind if it doesn't come back, but for the ability to plan and get used to the idea ahead of time. I have 3 friends whose have kids with extra chromosomes and none of them did the testing. 2 of the 3 were shocked and disappointed when the baby was born, and while they both bounced back and are loving supportive parents, I'd hate for the first few days of my kid's life to be spent disappointed and getting used to the idea when I could have spent the previous 4 months getting used to the idea.

We always chose not to do it because of the number of false positives. It never was going to impact our decision on having the baby, and it would have just sent my wife (a constant worrier) into a tailspin.

2 weeks left till wife's due date and life changes. I got too drunk with co workers last Friday and she got pissed because of the chance of her going into labor at anytime. It was a valid point so I am now shutting down travel for work and drinks on the weekend.

    Dear Abbey,

Really struggling with the step-dad role lately... step-daughter is just doing typical teenage bullshit, but it's disrupting my happy home. She gets zero discipline when with her father & my wife has a bad habit of not following through with any discipline. I get that my wife gets tired of always being the one that "punishes" her, but it drives me crazy. Step-daughter gets okay grades, but continually comes home without homework assignments, or just doesn't do them all together. She got a few poor grades on her last report card... purely due to lack of effort / not completing assignments.

Lack of follow thru has me supremely frustrated (I'd pull out my hair, if it wasn't already gone).

    Signed,

    Disgruntled Step-Dad in Jax

Not the same, but one of my friends is going through this with his son and the...baby momma. She doesn't discipline the kid at all, and he hates that his limited time with him he has to be "the bad parent" - it really puts him (and you and your wife) in a shitty spot when the other side isn't doing their job. Don't have any advice, it just sucks.

Guys, start throwing out girls names for me. I hate all of them. I want something that's not too common, but not so off the wall that people question why I'm a parent.

To me, the good thing with girls is you can go out there a little more without worrying about it Boys names are either too plain/common or too far out there that he'll get his ass kicked for having a name like that.
