Football Perspective @fbgchase 46s46 seconds ago After 8 games, opposing QBs vs. DET on pace to complete 360 of 494 passes (72.9%(!)) for 4,304 yards (8.7 Y/A) with 28 TDs and 8 INTs.
He's technically the team president, but my understanding is he handles all of the contract/salary cap stuff. Either way, he should've been fired years ago after that DUI. He's got the stink of Millen all over him.
Mayhew has to be the worst GM in the NFL. Just look at how awful all of his drafts have been. His replacement better be somebody from outside of the organization. Mayhew and Lewan both need to be canned.
I just realized that we still have three prime time games left this season: Thanksgiving vs Phi, the next Sat night vs GB, and Monday night at NO. That's unfortunate.
Lewand needs to be fired along with Mayhew. It's not even about the cap issues we've had. He's had a role in that, but part of that is the previous draft stuff and part is the cost of trying to sign FAs every year. I honestly have no clue if he's good or bad at the job he's supposed to do. If Lewand stays as team president, he and Martha are running a search for Mayhew's replacement. I would prefer that didn't happen, because they seem very poorly suited to run that operation. They need to fire Lewand, replace him with a football person at President, and then let that person hire the new GM and coach.
Ron Wolf worked as a consultant for the Jets in their most recent GM/HC search. I'd be content with allowing him to hire the GM.
That would help and is better than nothing, but the consultant has no skin in the outcome. A new person running football ops would be far more ideal. I don't see that happening, though, because Lewand has been around a long time and is reportedly friends with Jr. Maybe Jr. has zero say anymore (which would make no sense), but he'll probably still be around.
I feel like, after 44 years of watching this shit, Detroit and Cleveland should just merge and be the Brown Lions or some shit and play in Toledo. I really want to not care any more.
I made a joke in another thread about the Lions relocations to London. After thinking about it, the Lions leaving town and being replaced by an expansion team 3-5 years later would be my ideal outcome. I would instantly become just as big of a fan of any team that were to replace them.
I'm down. I'd even let them keep "Lions" and get a new team name. The Detroit Iron. The Detroit Coneys. The Detroit RoboCops. Whatever.
Since I made that post I was thinking about the new name. I went with Detroit Dalmations, just cause I think the uniforms could be pretty cool.
Adam SchefterVerified account@AdamSchefter MAJOR changes in Detroit: Lions have fired GM Martin Mayhew and president Tom Lewand, league sources told ESPN.
@RapSheet: #Lions source on the firings today: “Total wipeout.” Apparently, bosses are going through the building deciding who stays and goes.
If Lewand and Mayhew are out, the bosses are Martha and whichever daughters she gave a taser. Sounds like the Ford Females are running the show now. Maybe they've been watching Willie C. and Bill fuck it up for so long they decided to Firestone this shit up.
Rapoport The future beyond 2015 for #Lions QB Matthew Stafford is very much in doubt, as I understand it. 1:04pm - 5 Nov 15
Sheila Ford Hamp -- the second-oldest of the four Ford children, all of whom have had the title of vice chair -- will take a prominent role with the organization. Bill Ford Jr. will not.
Thank God. Well, that old bird just showed everyone who wore the pants in that house. I was sure, from my the PTSD Willie C gave me over all these years that we had another 2 or 3 years of this crap for sure. Good for her.
I can make an argument for the D. No Levy, losing a bunch of DL due to front office mismanagement (I don't necessarily believe that but I'm willing to be fooled). I'm truly curious if he's still perceived as an "up and comer" or if this season has just nuked his appeal ...
Frankly we are in tank mode so why hire anyone who might make his better this season? I say we let Caldwel call the plays on offense and defense.
The Lions have had essentially two GM regimes through 50+ years of stucking. Russ Thomas followed by chief assistant Chuck Schmidt, then Millen followed by chief assistant Mayhew. So ridiculous. Maybe by sheer dumb luck Martha will hire somebody competent.
how is this job board not updated yet? http://footballjobs.teamworkonline.com/teamwork/jobs/jobskey.cfm?s=lions
So the Lions' new GM will have a high picks in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th, along with compensatory picks at the end of the 3rd and 5th, Denver's 5th rounder, and Seattle's 6th rounder. We trade our 3rd rounder in 2016 for the right to take Gabe Wright (DT) in the 4th round. So 10 picks overall, but 7 after the 3rd round. I'd consider trading Calvin of a couple of picks, although I'm not sure what he'd bring in. I'd want a 2nd rounder and a 3rd rounder if that's realistic. I'd look at a LT with our first rounder (moving Reiff to RT) in a move that should solidify the OL for a number of years with that LT, Tomlinson, Swanson, Warford and Reiff. I'd spend the 3rd or 4th rounder on a developmental QB, with the understanding that we might need to a draft a first rounder in the next couple of years. The rest of the draft would be defense. All defense. If Stafford is my QB, and he probably is the best option for 2 more years, I'm trying to win with defense and running the ball - he can throw to Tate, Ebron, Riddick and Jones when we need to throw. I'm not in love with any of the top QB options in this draft. Your Detroit Lions: Planning Next Year's Draft Before Thanksgiving!!!
How sold are we on Swanson? I don't think the entire collapse of the offensive line is squarely on Reiff and Waddle. Last year they were at least decent. I like Warford, I think Tomlinson can obviously develop, just not sold on Swanson either.
