I believe so. Not sure. Think it has something to do with "wu." Tagomi could "feel" some kind of significance with the heart necklace Frank had made. The wife in the couple who Frank and the antiques dealer scammed could "feel" the same thing with the fake Indian pendant thing. Here's the Wiki page for "wu"... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wu_(Chinese_religion) And yes, it is Chinese. That's why Kido and others mock Tagomi for using the oracle sticks and whatnot.
Spoiler yeah I hope it's not Hitler in the show because it would seem pretty unbelievable that he's making these films and putting them into circulation only to have people risk their lives to smuggle them back to him. Although they made a big point to show in the final episode that he does indeed live in a high castle
it seems like the show went quite a bit of a different route than the book, I guess to adapt to 2015 and to be able to write new story lines
Not really spoilerly, but a general way the show is different from the book Spoiler It went way away from the book. Without getting into it, the book was more about how life is in this alternate reality. How Americans live their lives under occupation of two nations in a bitter cold war. Instead of films, Grasshopper was a book. It was a lot less plot driven, more about the characters. The ending was even more ambiguous. There are other differences, but most of the main characters in the show, are in the book. Some of the personalities and relationships are very different though. I honestly thought the book was terrible and boring. The premise seemed so cool, so this show was more of what of what I was hoping the book to be. Also, if people want to discuss the differences - probably should do it in the book thread as to not ruin show stuff http://the-mainboard.com/index.php?threads/man-in-the-high-castle-phillip-k-dick.159779/
Good show. I would give it a 7/10. I hate Juliana, I can't fucking hear anything she says because she whispers when she talks. She also always has this "I have to poop but all the stalls are taken" look that annoys me.
I plan to start the show shortly.....I am half way through the book and I am having a tough time reading it. I am not sure what the point of it is....obviously I get the premise of it but it has been extremely boring up until the halfway point. I will hopefully finish that within the next few days and start the show.
Pretty good interview with the show runner: http://www.vox.com/culture/2015/12/8/9871796/the-man-in-the-high-castle-review-amazon-interview
Just finished. 6.5/10. Solid, but idk, just didn't really kill it for me. Random thoughts: -I thought all the side characters were essentially more interesting than the main characters. -John Smith and whoever played him absolutely stole the show for me. Loved every scene he was in -I fucking hate Frank -I am still sorta lost on what the films even are exactly, and that last scene really fucked my head up. -Rudolph, trade minister, Himmler were all very good characters. -Smith having to deal with putting his son down was pretty wild. -Guy from Road Trip did a solid job on his character. Will watch next season.
I can't believe he let his niece and nephew die because his gf did something stupid and then thought his actions weren't going to kill his friend. Edit: Literally just get the fuck out of town and leave the bitch
Got my ass kicked at work so I had two days off and watched. Gotta be honest the last scene turned me off to watching it any more.
Spoiler Just finished the 1st season. If Hitler is TMITHC, then why did Smith want Joe to put a bullet in his head in episode 4?
Just finished and really liked it. Spoiler call me crazy but id probably like it better if the whole show was a struggle in the alternate reality without ever mentioning our reality. Just an interesting concept
Yeah, I started watching it because of the alt history aspect of the story. I don't mind the sci-fi stuff as long as it doesn't get too stupid.
Just finished. Fucking loved it. - I really hate Frank, like most of you. - Smith is easily my favorite character. Such a complete badass. - not really sure what to make of the ending but I'm psyched for season 2. Can't wait.
Finally found and downloaded a good copy of this and finished last night Hate Frank Don't really care for Juliana My two favorite characters are John Smith and the Trade Minister I didn't read the book(s?) so the ending through me for a big ol' loop Really enjoyed it. Can't wait for season 2
Just finished. In agreement with most of y'all, not a fan of the 3 main folks (Juliana, Joe, and Frank). The side characters are much more interesting to me. John Smith, Kido, and Lem are the best characters so far. The Marshall could be cool if utilized more in future seasons. Was really expecting more out of that storyline based on the background intro they gave for him in Ep. 1. And side note - the kid who plays John Smith's son has the most cliche actor headshot I've ever seen.
Started watching the first episode two days ago and only made it 20 minutes. I'm having a hard time believing that the Nazis and Japanese were somehow able to defeat the combined populations and war time economies of both us and the soviets. And not only defeat those two massive countries in Europe and the South Pacific, but also assemble invasion forces capable of crossing oceans (seriously lol at the notion of that happening... the Germans hardly even had a navy) and conquering basically the entire continent of North America. It's implausible.
It's a terrible premise for a book. Alternate histories can be fun. The Confederacy could have won the Civil War. We could have entered into nuclear war with the Soviets. The Germans and Japanese could have held on to the territory they gained early on in WW2 (assuming neither one picked a fight with the Soviets). But fucking lol at them crossing the Atlantic and Pacific (extra hearty lol at crossing the Pacific) oceans with invasion forces large enough to not only conquer but also control and subdue the US. I mean that's like me coming up with a scenario where ND beat Alabama in 2013... it was just never, ever, ever, ever, ever going to happen.
I don't intend to continue posting in here. Just wanted to see if anyone else had the same hang up I did and got past it.
My only initial hang up was when I first heard of the show premise via promos, articles, etc. once I realized it was Dick's work and started watching, I gave my entire mind, body and soul over to the story. I love history and have seen/read so much ww2 shit, that a fictitious version that incorporates some of the same themes (with twists) is interesting to me. The series is pretty nuts, in a good way
Yeah I had the same thought at the beginning, but then I was able to get past that and enjoy the story.
They mentioned that DC was nuked and FDR was killed during, which means there were essentially no or almost no leaders left. They had an unconditional surrender, so I am not sure a full invasion was needed as much as a new government was installed with Americans that converted. Maybe I missed it. The show felt like a reach to me and the entire sci fi element felt like they couldn't figure out what to do next, so they went that way.
