http://www.nytimes.com/2015/12/10/business/media/martin-shkreli-wu-tang-clan-album.html This guy kind of reminds me of Shock Linwood Martin Shkreli @MartinShkreli 5h5 hours ago Poll suggestions: which artist should I now approach to buy my next private album from?
For real though, I hope this guy falls off a cliff, only to be saved by superman, who then flies up and drops him from even higher.
Have they really sold out? What does selling out even mean really? People talk about how cube sold out, but he adapted as his lifestyle and age changed. Also it's funny that white dudes from the suburbs get pissed when rappers "sell out"
I would imagine that impoverished people using music as a way to escape their terrible surroundings would be fucking thrilled that their future selves talked someone into paying 2 million dollars for an album.
And it's not like Wu-Tang was ever anything that would be above creating a single copy of an album and including in the sale language that they and/or Bill Murray could steal it back. They've always been creative and funny (and also into making profits).
They have been amazing businessmen Created their own label contracts with provisions that the label distributed their group tracks but their solo deals were independent from that. Also made millions off of merchandise and marketing. RZA had a hell of a plan
what's funny about white dudes saying someone sold out? it happens to pretty much any musician/group that makes it big.
Not really what I said. I said from the suburb saying rappers sold out. Ice Cube moves towards a perceived suburban lifestyle and attitudes and upper white middle class kids say he sold out. Shit is funny to me because Cube is living their life now.
Speaking Wu Tang. Anyone listen to El Michels Affair instrumental take on Wu Tang? Enter the 37th chamber? Shit is legit.
I would say making an album and and selling the only copy to a big pharma CEO who just jacked up the price of a medicine for AIDS patients by 5000% overnight is the epitomy of "selling out."
Making an album and still making 2 million off of it knowing that some rich douche bag is going to let get out for free and their fans will get it for free all while taking some douche bags money for one album. Seems awesome to me. Get paid and possibly get the album out for free to the rest of the world. I mean it's not like they comprised their artistic style and made a song for a Pepsi commercial. They made an album their way. If he never lets it out, then they still took this douchebags money. Is the dude ever going to get a return on inverstment? Prob not.
Plus, need I remind everyone: legally allowed heist with Bill Murray as Danny Ocean. This is the GOAT sellout.
i'd like to imagine bill murray pulling off the heist by himself. it would be much more gratifying than using a known genius such as GZA.
The guy isn't going to leak it. He's going to use it to get celebrities to hang out with him so they can hear it.
The only way he lets it out is if he thinks it will take public pressure off him robbing people for AIDS medicine.
The only way to make real money in music now is touring and having songs in movies and TV. Good for them for finding an outlet to sell their album in an environment where album sales are almost non existent.
I don't think they're sellouts for selling the album in a new way or for making money without touring. For me, it's all about them selling it to that greasy motherfucker.
using the wu-tang in a heist or caper would effectively be cheating, especially The Genius. when they form like Voltron, he's the head, for crying out loud!
He's loving the publicity, probably gonna have celebrities banging down his door to hear it or will sell it to some richer douche for more money. So yea I'd say he's probably a winner. He's also worth an estimated 100 million so 2 million probably isn't that big a deal to him.
They'd already sold it before he raised that drug's price, if that makes you feel better about it. Read the article.
Anyone who can or is willing to drop 2 million on an album is a probably going to be a "greasy motherfucker" Folks who have that kind of money and spend it like that usually have stepped on people to get it. That album was going to someone just like him if wasn't going to be him.
I know it says commercial exploit in the small part I read, but he probably can't resale it for a profit. Buy selling to a richer asshole he could be in breach of contract. I'm no lawyer though and have no clue what the rest of the contract says.
