With his connections to the state of Florida area -- having coached the Gators from 2005-2010 -- Meyer might be a logical fit for the Jacksonville Jaguars, who have a vacancy at general manager and are closing in on securing the No. 1 overall draft pick in 2021. dblplay1212 hop on the urban bandwagon buddy
I don’t think that style has a high chance of success, at least the yelling and shit with adult professionals. Could be wrong.
He’s stated many times that his lack of desire to coach in the NFL is because he loves the impact and development of 18-22 year olds.
I was more thinking of his ultra competitive environment that he kind of instills at each stop. I don’t watch a lot of Meyer games but I don’t recall him just lighting into guys, maybe I missed that.
Kinda goes with my post above, but yeah, his style wouldn’t be received as well at the professional level.
hes a master motivator and recruiter he’s perfect for college and like saban learned it’s hard to be effective chewing out or motivating players who make triple what you make
His style would fit with an organization like New England that is willing to allow for murderers and also willing to sweep all other shitbag transgressions under the rug.
Does anyone actually believe him when he (or anyone else) says this? Does he think we don't know he coached Aaron Hernandez?
He's also stated many times he couldn't handle the losing that comes with the NFL. He would view a 9-7 season as complete failure even if it should be viewed as a success if it was a rebuilding year.
Tony Dungy was asked about this now that he does broadcasts for ND games. He said he’s very much retired, but there is a huge allure for many coaches to help mold young men that age. So yes, I do think it is an appealing to some coaches and believe them when they say it. I’m not sure Id put Urban in that camp though. His motivations are probably different.
dungy though hasn’t coached in over a decade so it’s understandable that that fire to coach burned out long especially now that he’s 65 urban “retiring” when he did while still running a highly successful program only a few years ago makes me very skeptical that that fire to coach has burned out
day may be a great recruiter but IMO they are riding the wave that urban created Almost like muschamp after Urban left except they have the advantage of keeping Urbans assistants so the relationships kept on rolling
He’s not an offensive wizard or a defensive guru. He’s a recruiter. He would crash and burn hard in the nfl and has to know that. that said, I like a good train wreck. So I hope it happens. As long as he doesn’t die mid-game.
Yeah, don’t think that will be a great move. Urban and Saban have very similar coaching profiles, and from what I’ve seen, neither are particularly proficient in Xs and Os gamesmanship on game days. That makes it tough in the league.
hey if you want to say day is a better recruiter than Urban that’s fine I’m not going to say that though
he is great at building a college staff, he’s built great staffs everywhere he’s been Idk what type of nfl staff he could build but that would be the big question that likely determines his success
You don’t need to be a X&O genius to be a successful HC in the NFL. It’s a management role, which I think he could be quite good at, provided he’s working with the right GM and ownership group. And he will wait as long as he wants IMO to find the right situation with those conditions + the QB. The motivator thing is not a big deal IMO, it is a strength of his which doesn’t necessarily carry over the pro football but that’s not a knock on him. Can he get the most out of his players? Yes. Guys like John Harbaugh and a few others are great in that role without being a schematic genius.
It’s only a 2.5 hour drive from Austin to Houston. 100% chance Urban leads both the Longhorns and the Texans to glory next season.
Jags finally get a franchise QB...I was wondering how we would torpedo it. Hire a first time NFL HC and give him the GM title would be a little too on the nose even for Shad Khan.
The motivational stuff could work, I just don’t know how likely it is that it works. Idk if it’ll motivate the jags players when he plasters the final score from the colts/jags games in their lockers or replaces the cakes in the urinals with the Texans logos like he has in college motivating kids against their hated rivals and motivating adult millionaires are two different animals but he was a psychology major so I’m sure he could find a way
Saban is the by far best ever ncaa coach and he got laughed out of the NFL. You definitely need to be an elite xs and os guy if you want real sustainable nfl success.
Day is a really good recruiter, but having the entire infrastructure that Urban put in place is a big factor why. Larry Johnson, Brian Hartline, Kerry Coombs, Kevin Wilson, Mark Pantoni, and Micky Marrotti are elite assistants that are part of that infrastructure.
There’s no question that urban built the infrastructure, the question is who is doing better with it on the recruiting front.
They went from 4-12 prior to his first season to 9-7 the second year, he went 6-10 his second year because he chose Culpepper over Brees. He didn’t get laughed out of the league.
Too early to tell. Urban had some awesome classes, none better than the 2013 class. Day probably needs 2-3 more years before we can effectively compare. It feels like Day is recruiting at a slightly better clip.
He objectively is right now. The question is just whether he can keep it up or if it will fall off. Time will tell.
I assume it’s because he made the jump from the league back to college that the assumption was he failed, he didn’t, he made a choice. A very lucrative one.
Regarding #4, he should be fine in the low stress environment of Jacksonville. Doug Marrone has lasted several years at the job being overweight and eating pounds of bologna per week.
