Yep. 110% due to kick off time. A good percentage of the country was sleeping in or at church by the time it kicked off.

meh, I wrote that late. I still stand by it. People are projecting the men's side onto the women and thinking Europe has some secret key to success in the sport that isn't "use your best athletes and spend a shitload of money on the foundation of the sport in your country" and that once Euros "try" to be good at women's soccer our girls will start looking like the men and struggling to even qualify for a WC and that simply isn't true. our women's program will essentially forever be an established power that will always be around with the chance to take him the trophy. I've seen like 3 articles already about "hurr durr how long can the US hold on" mere hours removed from winning it and it's like well no shit, a 3-peat of the WC would be exceptionally difficult. losing the next WC won't be remotely indicative of Europe vaulting over the US or some such nonsense.

Yeah but try not to project stupid articles onto what posters say here.

I didn’t see a single post here about US struggling to qualify or anything like that, just that they may not win.

You posted a whole lot of words in response to people saying something entirely different than the point you seem to take issue with

Not to bash this overall but this is a bit misleading. It specifies that it's only viewership in the US. It would make complete sense for viewership of the final to be more for the women since the USWNT was playing in the final whereas the USMNT didn't even make the dang tournament. With that said, still watched and still cheered at the Denver airport and slapped high fives with a bunch of random people on each goal and at the final whistle.

I don't think it's misleading (it's just being overstated) but I think it's still important to use as a benchmark to compare to just with all the of general interest in women's soccer vs. other major games (even if the US isn't participating). It shouldn't be a primary thing to compare it to but it is interesting.

That said, the men making the World Cup Final would be an interesting number to hopefully one day actually get to see.

Money and resources are a big part of the equation, but there's also philosophical differences that are important. American sports culture gets in the way a lot, encouraging youth sides to win in the moment (feed the ball to the kid who hit puberty first) rather than learn and develop for the long term (perfect technique, build awareness, etc).

Money (pay to play) is also a long-term handicap that fuels those bad incentives at the youth level in addition to an own goal on talent identification and development. Girls have travel soccer, too.

You’re forgetting that Europe has better coaching and soccer culture. So they do have an advantage in that area if they start funding the sport the way we do.

Does US Soccer get revenue for viewership in other countries?

The USMNT not making the tournament is absolutely relevant in discussing how to split up the revenue pie.

Speaking of, how much (if any) does US Soccer get for a World Cup in which we don’t qualify?

FIFA sells the TV rights which is where the payments from FIFA come from.

who is dumb enough to think we're always due to win? in what world is anyone that dumb living? again, if you are not the US women's basketball team there is zero reasonable expectation to win every game. we're absolutely going to lose WC in the future, that's reality and nobody should be dumb enough to think we can skirt it.

I mean you’re the one who lost his shit about people saying that Europe might catch up and took that to mean some extreme where we will no longer qualify.

I think there’s a pretty big gap between winning every time and not qualifying.

Going from being one of just a couple that could win it to a number of teams being right there with us if not favored to win over the US is still them closing the gap

we aren't remotely close to a point where this begins to resemble the unpredictable nature of the men's game. it's going to be a tiny amount of mainstays, of which the US will always be one, and then a couple more random teams that are peaking for a few years which is essentially no different than what we see now.

I feel like the National teams should def either be equal pay and/or performance driven, but the pro teams are businesses. Wouldn't mandating equal pay drive a lot of the teams out of business?

I don’t know hardly anything about this argument but doesn’t USSF pay the USWNT members salaries in the NWSL instead of the teams? I thought that was the big CBA deal so that teams could keep USWNT Stars here without going bankrupt.

You wouldn’t need to mandate equal pay if you actually grew the women’s game.

Yep, idk much about the pay aspect of it and think that’s probably rather complicated. The more obvious thing is having equal support and working conditions. Especially since the women’s team is more successful than the men.

The real irony of this post is that success is completely attributable to the fact our federation has better supported the team than any of their peers.
