Just downloaded them. I think I'm going to start reading tomorrow. Has anyone else read them? How do they compare to the ASOIAF books? Do we get any further insight into the world and history of Westeros or are they just independent stories? I always see them referenced on westeros.org in the prophecies and theories posts so I figure they have to have some link. Hopefully they're a good read.
no but i was also thinking about reading them when i have time, probably over christmas break. i need anything to quell not knowing whats going to happen for 5-7 years. wish he would write these things after he's written the rest of the series.
i've only read one. but it shows a little more history. it's is referenced some in the current series.
They're good. A little more lighthearted, move at a faster pace, but still have some more intense moments.
I have read the first one. It just provides a good bit of backstory and history. For example (and this is a really small detail) you learn why there are Red Apple Fossaways and Green Apple Fossaways.
just finished The Hedge Knight. I really enjoyed it. good characters, good story. Spoiler I saw the reveal coming as soon as he said he had purple eyes (I suspected it even from the name Egg and Maester Aemon's stories, but wasn't sure if the timeline matched up.)
finised all three this weekend. I really enjoyed them. gave great insight into the history of the realm, the Blackfyre Rebellion, and the Great Bastards. I wish there was more.
It was probably more of a surprise originally, since it was written before the release of book 2. Too many hints now.
Would these be better to read before AFFC, or wait until after ADWD? I heard that the backstory and history definitely help clarify things in ADWD.
I read them after DWD. it didn't really shed much light on the backstory for me, but they were decent reads. I would personally read all of the books before the novellas, because they were so much better to me.
I downloaded them off demonoid. if you're looking for paperback copies, they're part of collections by various authors - Legends, Legends II & Warriors.
I just wanna have it in my collection of fantasy books...I will get an e-reader soon enough but I'm still old school when it comes to books

Big spoiler Spoiler I feel like if he ever writes all these they'll be super depressing. I just put it all together. They all die in a fucking fire.
Just finished them. Really enjoyed them. Spoiler It's nuts how Dunk gets fucked up pretty bad [injured] in each one.
Spoiler Not by the old man, but he will have to when he takes his vows in the Kingsguard, right? Spoiler I really want to know if he is Brienne's grandfather. She painted his arms on her shield after remembering a shield she saw in her father's hall.
So, I tried to find the tales of dunk and egg on my nook color last night, and I couldn't find them. Does anyone have a copy that I could dl somehow? Also, I'll need to be told what I need to dl it and transfer it to my nook.
Just read them and they are fantastic, only problem I have is that I want more. It was tough to keep track of names though, just more overwhelming because there were more names that I was pretty unfamiliar with in short books. Couple questions Spoiler Why does Aegon eventually try to hatch the eggs? Does that vision by John the Fiddler (Can't remember his actual name) play in to Egg starting the fire to hatch the dragons, or is the vision just that Dunk will eventually be the head of the kingsguard for the dragon, Egg? Why does Bryden Rivers get sent to the dungeons eventually?
Spoiler I think he was knighted, Dunk isn't one to lie about something like that. Yes, his morals do become stronger with Egg, and his adventures but imo no he didn't lie about being knighted.
The fourth installment of the tales was supposed to come out last November. Guess what. It has been delayed.
Just finished. I was very impressed w George's ability to shorten stories/tales down. While I wish he spent his time writing the new books, I gotta say, these tales were awesome.
Theres a number of torrance on the free sites still. It'll download in .PDF and at least on apple you can opt to open that in iBooks.
