Cool. I think this could translate easily into a movie so I don't think there will be too much "the book was better" bullshit that usually comes with an adaptation.

It doesn't necessarily say it's a sequel or anything. So you should definitely feel good

For some reason I just assumed sequel and didn't read the article yet. I'm down for a second book in general from the guy for sure. Good writer.

Saw thread title about this book and I downloaded the sample. Was immediately hooked and bought it today. Currently about half way done with it right now, I just can't put the book down.

finally started this yesterday, just finished it. Usually a good sign when I burn through a book that quickly.

I agree that some of the writing/dialogue is a bit amateurish or whatever, but that didn't bother me much. The premise alone reeled me in and I thought he told his story well and populated it with characters I enjoyed reading about. Didn't hurt that I basically grew up in the 80s (don't remember a ton from the first part of the decade but the middle and end of it are vivid for me still) and played most of these games (I even had that piece of shit Tandy from the book) and watched all these movies.

This is one of those books I'd love to see in movie/TV form but know could never be realized in a way that would make me happy. They can't pay the licensing fees (and that's a huge part of the hook here) and I doubt they'd have the budget to even show a lot of the stuff described. So, I'll see the eventual movie but I expect to be disappointed.

Read an article yesterday that said it's expected to either be a sequel or a spin-off but that either way it'll be heavily influenced/related to RPO

Started this last night. It was pretty tough to put it down and go to sleep. I'm sure I'll have it finished by the end of the week. Really entertaining

I was going to start the Kingkiller Chronicle, but after reading books 4 and 5 of ASOIAF over again, I just kept putting it off because I didn't want to commit to another 1200 pages just yet. I'll probably start it after Ready Player One

One of the most entertaining books I've ever read. It definitely has its flaws, but the unique and fun plot makes up for it. Unfortunately that doesn't seem to be the case for his second book.

My thoughts exactly. Is it "literature"? No. Is it one of the most fun times I've had while reading? Yes. Love a book that captures the imagination

This is undoubtedly the nerdiest book I've ever read, but I can't put it down.

Second book is similar, though not quite as nerdy and not as good. They're damn fun, though. There's a reason I read both of them in 2 days each.

1/3rd the way through Armada... Almost too much, but I'm looking past those things and will finish.

Next is Cartel by Don Winslow... Came out in June and heard it was phenomenal (which means I'll probably love it since I love every Winslow book I've ever read)

Guys, when does book club start again?

I know we've all been reading basically the same things but I want to be able to explain to my gf why I'm reading a certain book by saying "my internet friends have spoken".

It could just be an informal thing where we pick a book for each month or whatever, just to give people incentives to read it, have a specific thread for it, etc. Doesn't have to necessarily be super organized

We can start it back up. Let's make it really informal. First person to make a thread that says, "August 2015 TMB Book Club Book is <insert book>". I'll pin it and we'll go from there.

Finished RPO two days ago. Really enjoyed and flew through it. I didn't mind the nerdy disses because I could imagine kids living life in a virtual reality actually saying stuff like that and thinking it was hilarious.

His face is bad, hideous even... But he is unfortunately right about Armada.

I was completely against the negative reviews that came out early, thinking that they were just mad it wasn't another RPO. Preordered an autographed copy, couldn't wait to read it... And was disappointed. Gave it 2/5 stars. I will definitely read Cline's next book though and hope it's as much fun as RPO.

The ending wasn't that good and it was corny at times but I still enjoyed it for 60/75% or so. So while I gave it a a 3/5, I don't think it was bad.

I mean I guess my expectations were lower than yours. I loved RPO as it was my favorite read last year, but I didn't go into Armada holding it to that same standard. RPO was the most enjoyable book I've read since Ender's Game. Armada definitely wasn't as good as RPO, but at the same time it wasn't a waste of my time either. It was pleasurable to me.

To be clear, I wasn't meaning to be rude. I'm just stunned that anyone actually enjoyed that book. From start to finish, I was underwhelmed and just kept giving it a chance, but with that ending, I just couldn't. Glad you enjoyed it, though.

I think what may have sealed it for me was that it hit home as I watched Sci-Fi a lot growing up with my dad. He showed me The Last Starfighter when i was like 7 and I'll never forget it. RPO hit home more because I grew up a gamer, however, of whatever nostalgic references mentioned in Armada, almost all reminded me of my childhood. A definite step down in storytelling because of how good RPO was, but similar feels as I read it. I didn't think you were rude either. I can definitely see your point.

3.5 years late, but this book was great. 5/5. Loved it.

Also, I wish the current book club was this active :feelsbadman:

I've been binging a lot of Netflix stuff and recent game releases or I'd be all up in the book club. Seems to go in waves. I've still yet to finish All The Light.

This, The Passage, or Gone Girl were probably the peak of the book club. All of those were a ton of read to read in the moment because there was a ton of discussion. Didn't hurt that those three were really good books too.

Armada wasn't as bad as Arkie Proud thinks but it definitely wasn't very good

I like what he was going for but the execution was pretty poor

I think I was so disappointed because my expectations were so high. If I had just picked up the book and read it, I probably would have thought it to be a subpar book and just moved on. But it was Cline's follow up to RPO and I was really excited.
