I saw Band of Horses last night for the first time. One of my favorite all time indie bands that inspired a few thousand song playlist that I still listen to to this day. They were way better live than I was led to believe. Very playful and informal. The venue was amazing. It's a brand new place in Buschwick Brooklyn called Brooklyn Made. They cater to artists by providing them with rooftop suites, a pool and their own private outdoor bar. They also have lots of cool stuff for fans including a pool table, multiple outdoor areas and rooftop bars, fireplaces, and great view of the City and all the cool street art in Buschwick. They claim to hold 496 people, but no way. You can only really go about 20-25 people deep, but the room is stretched wider than the stage. I would say 300-400 tops. The crowd was great (for a change). Super enthusiastic and age range was like 20-65, which was really strange but kind of cool as I wasn't close to the oldest at all. Great setlist with all of their hits and they covered Kids Don't Care by the Guttersnipes and Neon Moon by Brooks & Dunn. Overall really fun night.

(videos are still processing so may be low res for now)

Artist's Suite and their bar and pool is on the other side of that structure.

That looks absolutely fantastic. Also those first three albums were so good, I was a huge fan, still am, although I do not enjoy much of the newer material.

Hard to tell on a video but sounds like they nailed acoustics in there.

Sound was amazing. New songs I've heard so far are also good. They played this and In Need of Repair.

So I went to see Manchester Orchestra last night at The Hammerstein Ballroom in NYC and it was literally the polar opposite experience to seeing BoH the night before. Venue was too big and crowded (2200 people) and felt like a covid cesspool despite the vaccination requirement. Manchester Orchestra was completely robotic and 100% predictable. They literally played the same set as they used for their last 10 or so shows and there was just no spontaneity at all. They sounded good, but it just felt very canned and the venue just totally sucked.

It was really hard to get into them. The sound was super muddled where we were and we didn't have much of a view. The floor and stage are poorly designed. The stage is too low and the floor does not slope upwards so seeing anything is really difficult. They seemed more energetic and the crowd was pretty into them, but overall I was in such a bad headspace with the venue that it was hard to appreciate anything.

Understandable. I have tickets for the show in Phoenix but I don’t really have any affinity for Manchester Orchestra, I just went off of enjoying the new Foxing album and recs here that they’re fun. A venue can fuck that all up though.

After experiencing both, I prefer this over a band playing 15 different songs every night.

Yea I have no interest in seeing a band and not hearing any of my favorites because they played them the night before 200 miles away.

The setlists I like the best usually have 75% of the favorites slotted in and then a couple of the new singles and then some variance. Manchester Orchestra did that, but it is literally the same every night and I kind of ruined it for myself by looking it up and knowing that. I was literally telling my wife in friends what each of the next songs would be.

This is the second time I've seen them and I really enjoyed them the first time, but it may have come down to how I was feeling that night and having no expectations. Post covid, crowd size and proximity are definitely on my mind, so any show that is packed in is going to have a negative feeling. They should have only sold 75% of the capacity IMO.

so what are we thinking are the best albums of 2021? Have been working on getting in position to get back here for the World Series and end of year lists and want to consume a bunch of new music these last 60+ days

    Magdalena Bay - Mercurial World
Parquet Courts - Sympathy for Life <3
    Japanese Breakfast - Jubilee
    La Luz - La Luz
    Bloodslide - EP
    Ducks Ltd. - Modern Fiction
Goat Girl - On All Fours
    Black Marble - Fast Idol
Dry Cleaning - New Long Leg
    FACS - Present Tense
    Blanck Mass - In Ferneaux
Cloud Nothings - The Shadow I Remember
    Bachelor - Doomin' Sun
    Squid - Bright Green Field
Chad VanGaalen - World's Most Stressed Out Gardener

The War On Drugs and Snail Mail await and can probably get penciled atop most lists

also really looking forward to Penelope Isles who have an album out November 5. And I believe IDLES have an album out soon, caught up on Peaky Blinders recently and was so pumped to hear them in there :ohgosh:

things on my radar that I need to dig into because they either had singles or albums come out:

    Men I Trust
    Andy Shauf
    Lost Horizons
    My Morning Jacket
    Clinic
    Bat Fangs
    Hand Habits
    Julia Shapiro
    TOPS
    Lightning Bug
    yes/and
    Small Black
    Darkside
    Still Corners
    Faye Webster
    Weakened Friends
    Current Joys
    Shannon Lay
    Nopes
    Black Country, New Road
    SPELLING

was bummed with Colleen Green's new album. I Want to Grow Up was a favorite of mine but this one doesn't have that same power pop shred-heavy feel to it

that single from Let's Eat Grandma a few weeks back was a welcome sight. Would love an album from them in 2022

I like it a lot. It's not Light Up Gold, Sunbathing Animal or Human Performance. But it's on the same level as Content Nausea for me, if not Wide Awake. I really really love Just Shadows, been a great shower song the past few days. You can definitely tell it was cut from jam sessions

That’s what I was saying up top, Mitski has an absolutely huge live following that started years ago. She probably became more “popular” as a result and it really boasted her last release. I’d certainly defer to a hardcore fan over what I read but that’s the way I understood it through reading about how great she is live.

the girls who used to live above me loved Mitski sooo much. Her music resonates with me (and I'm sure it's the same for many people) because it deals so much with anxiety, discontent and hopeless romanticism. And it's fun as hell to sing along with her in the car, shower or at her shows

she has more monthly listeners on Spotify than Rage Against the Machine, which is cool
