Currently enjoying a post-hike beer at Turgua, it’s a brewery at this dude’s house in Fairview. Cool spot.
Did the Looking Glass Rock trail for the second time with the pup. Definitely recommended, though 10 miles total out and back had me feeling
Looking Glass Rock will whip your ass. An easier alternative in that same area is John Rock. Has similar views too.
The wife and I booked an Airbnb in Asheville for the week of Labor Day. We are probably going to keep it low key, but does anyone have any suggestions for places to hike? I figure that’s what we will end up doing the most of while we are there.
Hike the south hill and drink all the beer. But Dupont forest has some good hiking with different levels of difficulty. There is a really nice waterfall on one of the trails. Make sure to bring water though because north carolina sucks ass for heat and humidity in the summer. It's probably already 105 degrees and the pine trees are ejaculating all their semen. Fuck durham, such a shit hole. Fuck north carolina except asheville and wrightsville Beach.
Pisgah National Forest will give you plenty of options. I usually do the Looking Glass Mountain trail which is pretty strenuous, 10 miles+ out and back, with a great view'lookout at the top. AllTrails app would also be good to d/l, been a good resource for me when coming in from out of town ...
Honestly, I just hated the heat and humidity when I lived in Durham. Moving from Minneapolis to Durham was a little culture shock. I did love being able to drive 2 hours to the coast or 3 hours to Asheville though. Plus durham is a fucking dump, though they are trying to Apex it up.
What level of activity are you looking for? Length of hike desired? Prefer seeing views or waterfalls? Maybe get a little of both?
Our trip is in two weeks. We are driving so we will have a car. Our plan is to mostly keep to ourselves as much as possible, so can anyone recommend some good hikes? Also, any good spots to eat? We will probably mostly to carry out but I’m not adverse to going out for a dinner or two. Also, my wife is curious about any cool shops that might be worth checking out. Thank you for your time and effort during these trying times.
We're going in mid-September. Planning on going South and West for some hikes. Probably doing DuPont and then Rainbow or Schoolhouse Falls. Ashevilletrails.com is a good site.
what type/distance/difficulty of hike are you seeking? there are plenty of places with outside seating that seem relatively safe right now (ate on the rooftop of a Hemingway’s Friday)
My favorite is probably Looking Glass Rock but it has some decent challenge to it. Payoff at the top is worth it. And you’ll be close to Brevard which has a few good breweries Catawba Falls is an easily accessible waterfall, probably 2 miles round trip. Graveyard Fields is awesome but a bit farther from town. just a few off the top of my head but there are so many options. Feel free to ask follow ups.
So my wife is adamant we go to Sunset Terrace for dinner one night. That’s fine, whatever. Can anyone tell me if Rocky’s Hot Chicken or Tupelo Honey Cafe are worth checking out?
i like Dupont a lot. I prefer the Fawn Lake access area and then hiking to Bridal Veil falls, bonus you can cool off in Fawn Lake when you get done hiking. the High Falls access is more popular and crowded. panthertown valley is very cool imo, but it's over an hour from asheville.
Curate is my favorite restaurant in Asheville. Tupelo Honey is meh. Biscuit Head or Homegrown is delicious for breakfast
Any love for Cashiers or Highlands in this thread? Big, big fan of The Orchard restaurant in Cashiers.
Love that area. Wife and I used to go spend a long weekend at Old Edwards every so often, but haven’t been since 2015 or 2016.
Rockys is good, super casual. Maybe a good lunch choice one day. Like they said, better breakfast options than TH but it’s not terrible or anything. I always try to send people to Taco Billy for GOAT breakfast tacos if you take her to Sunset Terrace, enjoy the sex. And the $18 cocktails.
idk how the one in west asheville is but the one in south asheville is still only doing carry out i think as far as i could tell when i drove past last weekend DeToxRox i used to live next to that one and it is very tasty
Cannabis is not yet legal so you will need to befriend a local hippie or make a chancy purchase around the bus station area
I've actually never done overnight around here but hope to at some point this fall, so I'm probably not the best guy to ask. I know most of the public land around allows camping so there are plenty of options.
have not done, but my friends who have recommend black balsam knob and linville gorge for primitive camping. most googling will give you koa-type established campgrounds where you rent a lot and set up. this link has a number of sites that are more remote listed. https://www.fs.usda.gov/activity/nfsnc/recreation/camping-cabins/?recid=48112&actid=34
