I simply don't trust this organization to be the smartest guy in the room when it comes to reaching in the draft. Nothing in the last 10+ years of drafting gives me a reason to trust them.
agree 100%. I'm not in fuck it all mode like Hoosier, but I'm not going to sit here and say I trust this organization when they reach in the draft. It wasn't a big reach, but it was still a reach and if Lacy or Martin become studs, there's no way to excuse it because imo this org hasn't earned the cache to take risks.
This front office has had how many drafts together? 2? 3? I know Hill is involved but guys like Denbo and Svihlik have far more involvement in the draft so I’m not putting the Kolek pick for example as a ding on them
That’s fair, but I’m still keeping this org at arms length until they prove they know what they are doing.
I’m good with going all 5 pitchers. Also. Risky going for a guy coming off tommy john, but at this point it’s seems like a right of passage for pitchers.
Not exactly the best player available approach Hill was bullshitting about You don’t pass on what your scouts say is a future ace for an extra decent arm
Miami Marlins This is the most I’ve liked a Marlins draft in 10 years — since the 2010 class that led off with Christian Yelich, at least — and it signals a very new, coherent approach to the draft from the new regime. They led off with Max Meyer (1), the top right-handed pitching prospect in the class, a starter for the University of Minnesota who’s been up to 99 mph with a plus-plus slider up to 93. He’s just 6 feet tall but has a great delivery and is an elite athlete and competitor. He could pitch in a major-league bullpen now or very soon, but his long-term outlook is at or near the top of a rotation. They came back with Dax Fulton (2), a high school left-hander from Oklahoma who is recovering from Tommy John surgery and was a probable first-rounder had he been healthy. Fulton is 6-6 and already in the low 90s with a future-plus curveball, but his delivery puts a lot of stress on his arm and the Marlins will have work to do to try to avoid further injury. Right-hander Kyle Nicolas (2A) never threw strikes until this spring — he had 95 walks in his first two years at Ball State, in 112 innings, then walked 21 in 24 innings in the Cape Cod League — and that came in four starts against mediocre competition. He has a big fastball with a high spin rate but a massive head whack on release that you rarely see with starting pitchers. Right-hander Zach McCambley (3) has a 70 curveball, with high spin rates on that pitch and his fastball, and pitched very well as a starter in Cape Cod last summer, so even with effort in his delivery and the need for a better third pitch, he projects as a potential mid-rotation starter. Lefty Jake Eder (4) didn’t get better in three years at Vanderbilt, with a passel of average pitches and below-average command. He looks like a starter in body and delivery and, in the fourth round, is a decent gamble; the Marlins can either improve one of his pitches from a 50 to a 60 or help him improve his command. Right-hander Kyle Hurt (5), like Eder, was a highly regarded prospect who priced himself out of the 2017 draft, heading instead to USC, where he also did not improve. He’s up to 96 mph with an above-average changeup and average 12/6 curveball, the last of which has gone backward since high school, and he hasn’t thrown enough strikes. That said, there’s size and enough stuff here to see a back-end starter, and a different developmental environment might unlock what USC couldn’t.
Don’t get how he “loves the draft better than any other in the past 10 years” then goes down a shopping list of issues with the picks To pass on the best pitching prospect in the draft so you can go underslot and pick a high schooler coming off of TJ surgery for overslot sounds fucking idiotic to me
So semi-expert, I’ll take it We all hated the Yelich/Brinson trade too, so maybe we’re all smarter than Hill
Watching 97 series game 1. Didn’t know the first run of the series was also Renteria also drove in Counsell.
Was supposed to be a bridge year anyway until Sixto, Bleday and others are ready next year Give me another top 3 pick baby!
60 Games. Jeez. With the amount of young pitching the season is short enough to try and steal a playoff spot. Assuming health, 12 starts for Alcantara and Smith gets you through almost half the season. Assuming you can go 15-9 in those games, you need to come up with 15 wins in 36 games to be .500 and in the playoff conversation. Not unreasonable to be at or just under .500 in the games started by Yamamoto and Lopez. Give Urena 5 ish starts to see if he can be what he was 2 years ago, if not, call up Sixto. It's doable if the offense can have a semblance of success. Though in reality, it's probably better to just deal with 2 months of sucking and acquire another high draft pick.
For sure. In the long run, another top 3 pick is best for the org. This team desperately needs elite arms.
60 games gives us some time to further develop some of the younger guys, maybe those 1 year guys we signed shine and we can flip them at the trade deadline This year was going to be a bridge year regardless to 2021
